Barbara Stanwyck Guest Stars on The Jack Benny Program
Просмотров 50 тыс.10 лет назад
In this clip, Barbara Stanwyck guest stars on The Jack Benny Program. Stanwyck and Benny perform a very funny parody of the film Gaslight, which they have named "Autolight." Missy is adorable in it, showing her aptitude for comedy. I've had this for a few years and decided to upload it in celebration of all the attention Missy is getting lately thanks to Victoria Wilson's new biography of the f...

JACK BENNY PROGRAM WITH barbara stanwyck
Even in a silly parody like this Ms Stanwyck shows her immense talent. Jack and Rochester weren't bad either.
It was filmed in June 1953, but initially kept off TV because of an injunction filed by MGM against Jack for filming his parody of "Gaslight" without their permission. The Supreme Court finally ruled in favor of MGM in 1958- but they allowed Jack to present the episode only once {with a token fee of $1000} on January 11, 1959.
6:58- a running gag during the episode, as Jack promised "an old friend from Waukegan" he'd put his daughter- an acrobatic dancer- on his show. This was the *second* time she tumbled across the stage.
Rochester is like the anti-Jeeves and is hilarious as the butler
gerry wilson thank you florence misunderstood title at first did dr kildare project and missy as you call her was the first to appear in a dr kildare movie
Love the spotlight bit at the end
Barbara and ex husband Robert Taylor were good friends with the Benny’s. I didn’t particularly care for Barbara’s parody portrayal of the character. Barbara had a tendency to yell yell rush rush through a scene that calls for subtly. Subtle can be funny too. It would have been hilarious if Barbara would have shown the audience that her character was slowly being driven crazy. She acted hysterical , hysterical isn’t funny . I caught on what the story was about parodying Gaslight when Jack Benny walked in looking like Charles Boyer. (I missed Dons Wilson’s introduction) Barbara’s shown can be funny the lady Eve, for example. Yes, it’s television a half hour show but that’s no excuse. I adore BS, but she definitely was off her game and the overacting. It was like watching rehearsals for a school play. Quite disappointing. My only criticism of BS acting ever. It was a treat watching BS and JB together on screen!!
Barbara was deliberately overplaying her reactions. It wouldn't have been out of character if she'd said- "And do you know WHY I'm upset with you?" "No.....why?" "Because you still owe me $3000 from the *last* time I did your show!" "I TOLD you, we'll discuss that later!!!!" "WHEN? *1965????????????"* **slight pause, while Jack tries not to laugh** "I was thinking, about 1961."
I love how Benny evokes laughter just by appearing with that deadpan face.🤣 Could anybody else do that?
Bob Newhart had the deadpan face.
Jack Benny was doing Saturday night live long long long ago....
Should I pour the sour cream...
Wonderful thanks
Ruby Stevens (stanwyck) developed a very refined raspy and sultry voice from her younger years.
Almost eerie how Kathleen Turner’s voice used to be so similar.
Barbara Stanwyck, a true legend. Love her so much!!!
"I couldn't have dinner in bed it was full of dirty dishes" Omg I laughed out loud.
I bet Jack wished that it was his line!
@@bethelle9099 Jack Benny would routinely give the best lines to his costars. He didn't mind as long the series got laughs.
Jack usually riffed around the script, but he was on his best behavior with an actress of Stanwyck's stature. OTOH he or the writers parcel out the laugh lines less equitably than usual. But it is good to be reminded that Jack could stick to a character, as he had done so superbly in 'To Be or Not to Be' opposite another formidable lady, Carole Lombard. Indeed his parody of Charles Boyer is not unlike Joseph Tura.
I was a month old when this aired, .
" just call me charles". Man she,s sexy !
⭐⭐⭐⭐Eddie Anderson⭐⭐⭐⭐
⭐⭐⭐⭐Jack Benny⭐⭐⭐⭐
It took me a while to understand that it was a parody of Gaslight
Have you seen the one with the dilettante and the actress- well, this is it.
That was great. "Breakfast in bed, lunch in bed . . . I couldn't have dinner in bed, it was full of dirty dishes!"
This is from the 2 seasons (1957-59) when Jack Benny & BACHELOR FATHER shared the post-LASSIE pre-Ed Sullivan time slot of 7:30 PM ET. Starting fall 1959 DENNIS THE MENACE took over the time period for 4 seasons.
Jack Benny kind of looks like Charles Boyer.
Stanwyck is actually laughing at herself here. Ingrid Bergman beat her to the Oscar for Gaslight.
It's a shame about the bad section.
Funny parody of Gaslight 😄
I'm very impressed by Benny in this role. He does an amazing job channeling Charles Boyer.
Darn if Jack dosen't look a little like Charles Boyer in this skit.
I actually didn’t like this one.
What did the joke mean about the one dimension kiss?
This is just a guess on my part, but that may have been a reference to something mentioned earlier in the show, perhaps a critique of Jack's acting being too one-dimensional or something.
You gotta love this woman, she’s fantastic...
ANNNNNNSSSSSSWER ME!!!
This is based on "Gaslight"
This Benny episode was from 1959 and Babs was still beautiful....
I suppose this is the parody of the film named "Gaslight" played by Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. However Barbara is quite natural in her role in imitating Ingrid. But Jack Benny is not of the similar qualities of Charles Boyer. I watched and adored the film.
The movie gaslight feature Ingrid Bergman with Charles Boyer, Boyer starred in Algiers which is what the movie Casablanca was modeled after that Bergman also starred in
They don’t make them like this anymore. Barbara Stanwyck is such an amazing actress and Jack Benny is one of the best comedians of our time. I was definitely born in the wrong era.
YES! I ENJOYED THIS !!!!!
Thank You! Thank You! I LOVE THIS, I saw the movie Gas light and I understand this more now !!! Barbara played it BEST !!!!!
Lisa Augustin ironic that she lost her best chance at winning an Oscar (for Double Indemnity) to Ingrid Bergman’s performance in Gaslight!
Barbara S.......always completely convincing....brilliant.
I have a notion to second that emotion !!
I'll go for the third...if that's ok. :)> @@jubalcalif9100
Funny. The battle of the over-actors.
10:12 Does anyone 'get' the gag about Little Rock ?? I assume it's a topical reference whose relevance has been lost in time. On its own it doesn't make any sense, but it gets a laugh - - - must have made sense to the audience at the time (uhhh... 60 years ago!!).
Little Rock Central High School integration show down had taken place in 1957 or 1958.
haha Barbara Stanwyck was parodying a dramatic role... = ) while Jack was parodying a villainous role.
Rip Jack Benny
anyone know what year this was broadcast?
1959
Outstanding comedy!
I agree 100 per cent !!
tha ks for posting this.
Thanks for posting this. Stanwyck was wonderful with comedy, something her contemporaries Bette Davis & Joan Crawford had very little talent for.
That's true. Many actors could not do both comedy and drama .I could not imagine Davis or Crawford doing a skit with Jack Benny
As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !
True, she was great in Christmas in Connecticut
