My name is Benjamin Aeilkema and I'm an illustrator, artist and art teacher from The Netherlands. I love creating artworks with traditional media & digital media. My favorites are ink, fineliners, watercolor and watercolor pencils, but I am in no way limited to those. My favorite themes are houses, landscapes and animals, but I like other themes like fantasy and sci-fi and many others as well. My artworks are often fun, sometimes serious or with a deeper meaning. My love for God is often also expressed in and through art.
For many years I've enjoyed creating art, learning many skills and techniques along the way. I often have a personal way of applying these techniques to my artworks. I love to share my knowledge, helping others to start their journey in art or getting a bit further along the way. In teaching, I'm combining my experience as a high school and college teacher with my love for art.

Thanks for the tutorial, this was very useful as someone who is just starting to use Rebelle 7.
You are welcome, glad to hear you have found it helpful.
Thank you so much for putting this series together. I watched all episodes and will refer back to them as I progress with my art. Your presentation method was perfect! Best regards from Don in Canada.
Thank you so much. Great to hear that you found this series and found them helpful as well.
Can you tell me the brand of the tablet you are using here? I have a very old Bamboo, but would like one with shortcut buttons that is compatible with Rebelle 7.
This is the Huion Kamvas 16 2021 edition. You can set the buttons to whatever you like them to be and even set them per application if you use the tablet for more than one application. It's still the current model, but they're refreshing the series, so a newer model might come out soon.
@@artbybenjamin Thanks so much. I am enjoying your series very much. It is helping me take my long atrophied pencil drawing skills into the modern digital world, which I hope to color like you have.
@@DonCheke Rebelle is very suitable for that, I've got a more traditional background and I like how close Rebelle is to it.
Thank you Sir !
You're welcome!
This is really beautiful! Thank you for your fantastic tutorial!
Thank you, for both the remark and taking the time to let me know!
Wow! Amazing!
@@trivenipraveen2339 thank you so very much
Definitively the best présentation of Rebelle 7 I have seen on RUclips. Great work !
Thank you so very much!!
Thank you for this tutorial! I've struggled to remember how to use clipping masks in the past and hopefully I will remember this time! Rebelle seems to have a very simple iteration of this feature so that is great for me!
Glad to hear you found it helpful, good luck with your Rebelle projects, clipping masks are a very handy, powerful tool.
If I wanted to create a whole set of colors from my pastel pencils would I have to take a photograph of each pencil to recreate them in Rebelle 7?
I would take a white piece of paper and create a square swatch of each color on that paper. The take a photograph from that piece of paper and let Rebelle auto-generate a color palette from that. Keep in mind that it can only do a maximum of 36 colors, so if you have more colors, you need to do it a few times. Make your swatches as even as possible, otherwise Rebelle will recognice too many colors.
Perfect Tutorial, Many thanks
@user-yb6fq9et8o you are welcome, thank you for taking the time to comment.
Thanks for this amazing video 🙂
Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this video. I wouldn't have thought to try Bruynzeel or Koh-I-Noor, but I will now.
You're welcome, enjoy them.
Thank you...Sir
You are more than welcome
I have been using Rebelle for a while now and if its realistic digital painting you want then Rebelle is definitely up there with the best. Where it is not so good in my opinion is line work where I think it lags behind other software like ps, krita etc.
Version 7 has added some new tools and improvements in that department, perhaps it's more to your liking now, ruclips.net/video/4B24AwTTXAk/видео.htmlsi=jE-NoClvVvAQ_uR6 The pen selection however could be larger with a range of nibs and fineliners and other pens.
Very good tutorial 🙂. it is very informative and understandable for me. Have a nice weekend😉
Thanks and you are welcome, have a great weekend too!
An excellent review. Thanks, Benjamin!
My pleasure and thank you as well!
Good video. I have a question. Even though Rebelle is designed for traditional artists, can it also be used for making digital art like you would in Krita?
Yes, you can up to a certain point. You can switch off the fluid engine and then the brushes behave a lot more like regular digital brushes. You also have a decent set of editing options, scale, fill, rotate, skew etc and you can do basic photo edition too influencing your layers (or part of it) with blur, color balance and so on. But that toolset is not as extensive as in Krita.
Thank you for this, Benjamin. Informative and clear, as always. I'm wondering . . . for the pattern fill feature, do you know if there's a way to change the scale of the pattern?
Not at the moment, you would need to import another pattern with a larger or smaller version. My guess would be that changing the pattern size might be something for the future. At the moment it's based on on images, then it would need to be based on vectors instead.
While you can't change the scale, this workaround may help a little, but it's limited. After adding your pattern (do it on a seperate layer) you can select the pattern. Once selected you can enlarge it and after enlarging it use the sharpen filter. When decreasing the size, that step isn't needed. This at least let you change the scale a little, but not unlimited, since it's a pixel layer.
Ohh the print is really turning out much better than I expected! Thank you for the review
It sure did. Not sure how it will look on an inkjet printer or matte paper, but glossy or pearl paper should look great on an inkjet too.
Grazie! You did the hard work for me 😁 Nice to see a good, less theoretical, explanation of Rebelle!
My pleasure, glad hear that it doesn't come across too theoretical.
Buon Natale! Rebelle 7 has a lot to offer, indeed. Just bought it.
Merry Christmas to you as well. It sure has a lot to offer, great software, I've been using it for many years now. Enjoy it!
Thank you, Benjamin. I used to be a paint box artist for a computer animation firm. Years of 70-hour weeks staring at a computer screen totally burnt me out creating art on a computer. Now I'm getting back into it. Got myself a drawing tablet purchased rebelle pro 7 and I'm learning a great deal from you. I paint a lot of murals. I use sublimation on items as a side hustle. I'm going to create tile murals using rebelle. I can create large murals with 12 inch tiles. What I have learned from you so far, it's going to be no problem. Thank you.
Tile murals sounds really cool. I'm glad you are getting back into it and picking up something from my, videos, that's so lovely to hear. Having a burnout can be such a struggle, but also to figure out what is really important. Murals are really cool, I only do them once in a while. I create my sketch in Rebelle and also roughly a painting of what I'm aiming for as a reference. The sketch I project on a wall with a beamer. Really elementary setup. I suspect you may have a better process 😀
Can you tell me which Huion tablet you are using?
The Huion pen display I'm using is the Kamvas 16 2021.
I've been looking into this software and I like all the traditional paint and stuff but can you do normal drawings like other digital programs as well . For graphic design line art stuff like that? because some clients don't want that traditional looking look.
Yesm you definitely can. When you pause the painting engine, the brushes will behave a lot more like regular digital brushes. I suggest going through the gallery of Rebelle artworks at www.escapemotions.com/community/gallery/1/sort_featured/tag/Rebelle and see of the artworks that are closer to your clients wishes. But when you mention graphic design line art, I'm thinking more along the lines of vector illustrations, like Illustrator or Inkscape (free) would create. Rebelle 6 can't do vector art, since it's pixel orientated, but you could come close to the way those look. If you really need vector art a lot, then Rebelle will not be a good option.
@@artbybenjamin Oh no! I have clips studio paint for vector art. I was just wondering if I could get like the same look as another programs because the traditional look of the art is a bit strong for some people. I was just wondering if you could like go back and forth between two different styles. Knowing that the brushes can behave more like normal brushes, I'll definitely look into getting this program in the future.
@@williammclean6594 Sorted then 😀 before buying, you can always try the demo of the application. It's the full version, which allows you to explore the whole application, but saving is functional.
Hey nice video! But is there anyway that we can make art like this in a laptop which doesnt have touch screens and a pen? and is there anyway that i can contact you? discord or instagram?
Yes you can create art with a laptop without touch screen, but you will need to connect drawing tablet or a pen display to it to be able to draw. My Instagram is instagram.com/art_by_benjamin/
@@artbybenjamin Oh thankyou, btw good luck with your channel, I liked and subscribed!
@@Dizyuza. Thank you so much
Hello, I'm a beginner animator and looking for a drawing software to create and import my art for animation. In order to do this, I'd need to export the art as PSD (Photoshop) format with the layers being transparent PNG. Does Rebelle 6 support and export PNG and PSD? Rebelle 6 looks really good and thinking of trying it out.
Rebelle does support PNG export and PSD export. When you switch off the canvas in Rebelle, an exported PNG will have a transparent background. When you export as PSD, all the layers are intact, as well as the transparency. If those layers are PNG in the PSD file, I don't know, but they're are transparent when I imported them in Affinity Photo as well as Affinity Designer.

Hi, That is nice and warm, Does Bob Ross live in this painting?
If he was still alive he might well love living here.
4:57 what tab/ tool are you using for this video tutorial??
Watercolor brush, round 2. The pausing is in layers tab and the tilting from the navigator/tilt tab. This works with many brushes though. Check my watercolor overview video for more details.
Do you use color management? There seems to be very little information on using color management the right way.
No, sorry I don’t use color management. I’ve got some knowledge on the subject, but not enough to do something with it. Don’t have the equipment to properly calibrate either. I’m using Serif Affinity Photo and Serif Affinity for printing and pretty much let the software determine the best printing settings for me.
Hi Benjamin. Thanks for your tutorial. It is very instructive. But, I have a question for you. How can you apply the first layer of green on the leaves and watercolour goes only in one direction, inside the leave and not outside ? Thank you again. Rene
Thanks for the comment and the kind words! To control the direction op the watercolor you tab on the Tilt tab (top right, next to Navigator). You see 2 circles, the small one activates the tilt, where the paint will start to flow a lot more. Clicking anywhere within the larger circle determines the direction in which the paint will flow and the stenght of the flow. Clicking closes to the outside of the large circle, more flow, closer to the smaller circle, less flow. Keeping the paint inside the leaves would be too complicated to explain in words, but I've made a video for that already. Episode 8 shows how to do this, ruclips.net/video/w-EJ1zz9R8I/видео.html, especially the section on Masking Fluid, ruclips.net/video/w-EJ1zz9R8I/видео.html The Masking Fluid feature controls where your paint can or cannot go, works in both ways, which I explain in that video. Another option would be to pause the fluid engine by hitting the pause button in the layers tab, but that would stop the watercolor flow completely, which you most likely don't want.
I guess the age old question is will the colors stay true or fade. But for me, having fun in a journal doesn’t always have to be the best.
As you say for personal work I don't really mind either, but I'm guessing it will fade eventually. It's nice to have a cheaper alternative to expensive paint when just playing and experimenting.

Hi Sid. The Class at Skillshare does indeed have subtitles, generated by the Skillshare platform, similar to RUclips. English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese are available. The one on my website doesn’t have subtitles at the moment. If you go to artbybenjamin.com/ and send me a message there through the contact form, I can look into some more options. As for Skillshare, if you don’t have a membership there, you can follow this link, www.skillshare.com/en/r/user/artbybenjamin?gr_tch_ref=on&gr_trp=on and get one month free. You can also reach all of my Skillshare Classes through this link, I’ve got quite a lot of Procreate Classes available.

Hey dank je Benjamin voor je video. Rebelle is idd een leuk systeem.

thank you so very much Mark
Thank you for doing all of these for us to learn from. I am not at three months and have about seventy paintings done. Using your tutorials have helped me along .
You are more than welcome. That's great to hear and I appreciate the feedback!
Great tutorial on the shield on both RUclips and Escape Motions website but would love to follow along with the EM or YT videos and to do that could you provide the basic "layers" of the shield and component parts plus dragon etc. I did look on your lessons page but this is Procreate not Rebelle or lessons on physical painting with brushes not digital art so the nearest thing to lessons and tutorials would be trying to use the YT videos or EM and then spend hours creating the nails and finding equivalent textures. Unless you have another site where this can be downloaded for REBELLE . I followed along for the tree but got it right eventually but the position of the layers can or is critical and I did get some funny results with my paint not appearing until I moved the layer and respective clipping mask accordingly.
Thanks for the feedback and comment. This is more meant as a demonstration, not a lesson, so no files were or sketches are provided. I can do tutorial on this where I can add all the necessary files. The textures for this one I cannot share, but they are from www.textures.com where you can find quite some textures. You can easily create the nails. Create only one on it's own layer. Duplicate that layer and move it to the right position. Duplicate and move again and repeat until done. Once done, select all of these layers and then merge them with the rest.
I use Rebelle to work on my photos. I am comfortable with how the tools work so after Lightroom I use Rebelle for all the finer and more exciting work.
So many uses of the software and with each update it's growing a little more.
Thank you
My pleasure, hope it's helpful.
Love the result
Thank you so very much!
Excellent - Thank you.
Thank you as well for letting me know.
Very beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼😍
thank you so much ☺
I was understanding there is some correlation between choice of dpi and the brushes and the brush creator. If i remember right the brushes when you make one you create it using the dpi setting along with other brush settings like maximum size which i see many setting it to maximum but in the system i see 350 as the max. 200 to 300 range seems the most choiced numbers from all the videos I have seen.
The canvas settings are the ones that rule. Even if you use a high quality brush, the final artwork quality will still be determinded by the canvas settings. High quality brush with low dpi in canvas, will result in a lower quality export/save/print. As for the dpi slider, that's gone in Rebelle 6, you can only tick a DPI box on or off. Keep also in mind that the dpi only influences the grain of a brush, not all of it's properties.
@@artbybenjamin thanks
@@Megzamani Just an extra add on, now that the slider is gone, you can select if the scale of the grain should use canvas DPI or not. When you tick that box, the grain will automatically resize to whatever DPI the canvas is. Otherwise it will stay at whatever the creator of the brush has set it on.
