I appreciate this video so much. Just helped me find a child hood fishing spot
The Pennsylvania RR through Kokomo connected Cincinnati to Chicago. It was a major line according to my 1928 RR map. In fact, I rode it in the days before Amtrak in the summer of 1961 from Kokomo to Chicago.
I remembered her she was sexy...
Thanks For this video reminder!! It truly helped

i dont even know it was possible to die from a KIDDIE train derailment.... how does that happen?? now i cant help but picture it like you see in the cartoons. the train randomly malfunctions, engine op panics and starts fiddling with the lever like a loon, lever physically breaks off ,trains loses total control and flies off the track crashing through the whole park.....like Blues Brothers car-in-mall style!
I worked there in summer of 85,86 place was a death trap girl almost got leg cut off on the rotor got $25 a day to work parking lot an could ride free young an dumb back then 😂
Awesome! I am thinking about railfanning Danville 😊
dude how do u know this?!?
My dad was born in Covington and was there after the derailment. My dad was 10 in 1968 and he remembers this tragedy very well. Would you be interested in doing a one on one interview/collaboration?
Just so everyone knows that joint bar he just threw in the ditch is worth like 25k
I work for NS and was just working the tilton yard today. I'm not from the Danville area but it is very sad how bad and run down the town is.
I was a yard clerk/operator for B&O in Decatur from 1981 - 1992 and watched the old B&O (Chessie, CSX) take its final gasp. We wrote switch lists and train orders by hand with carbon paper. Trains had an engine AND a caboose with 4/5 man crews. We serviced A E Staley (Tate & Lyle), Archer Daniels Midland, U S Industrial Chemical USI and Cabot corp in tuscola and many small elevators between Decatur and Indy. Many of the old railroaders I had the privilege of working with are gone now along with the railroad culture of the time, "disappearing in railway blues". These remain some of the best years of my life.
My brother is a welder for the railroad back in Indiana, but I _'think'_ he stays in the yard. I'll have to ask next time we talk. I do know he makes a pile of money.
I used to go here! I was one of the kids dispersed to a different school I was in 4th grade at the time it closed. Sometimes I still have a dream or two there so seeing it explored in real time is unreal. I think its used as a storage place now.
I could’ve missed something but why is there no support underneath the end rails where it just was welded? And anchored for safety? I wouldn’t put THAT much trust in a weld that’s supported by the air and with DPU units and pulling cars at a HIGHER speed. Best of luck ppl.
As I recall, the decision to close the GM Foundry was essentially based on its age, and cost to renovate ! Technology being what it was, and changes being made across the Industry, it simply had out lived it's usefulness ! It was a Dinosaur ! Years before they placed scrubbers on the smoke stacks, most all the roofs, and many homes gave witness to how terrible this place was as a polluter, as they all were turned Red ! Life expectancy early years there, were 35 to 40 ! As many died from obvious Health issues tied to the filthy environment ! People bitch about Union wages, but these people paid for it with their lives ! Truthfully, the whole area breathed easier once the Foundry shut down ! And for those that don't know, this was just the first Domino in line to fall, as most all industry has closed there, and in the surrounding Cities ! Fast forward to 2024 and likely the last nail in the coffin for Danville, is that Quaker Oats Plant announced their closing ! Word on the street falls on workers inability to follow Health procedures, leading to salmonella contamination ! Not to mention, people just don't want to go to work ! Sad commentary !
Crane Naval Base had an amazing RR..
Interesting compilation but disagree about saving the vehicles. The liability of selling a vehicle that was in a derailment is far greater than the cars value. Standard procedure for decades now is if the freight car hits the dirt, the vehicle gets crushed. Unless someone has documentation with a VIN number I imagine that’s what happened with all of these, and that’s why the dealer didn’t buy them. Dealer probably lied about it to the locals after the fact. 😂
I have been forgetting what the old Kroger used to look like, I had to come refresh my memory
Funny hearing about the restoration efforts for the Nickle Plate. Now I pass over it multiple times a day and it's completely gone. I think they're turning it into a trail...
I had my 16th birthday party there and there were 3 slides...so sad they don't have them anymore. Do you know why they closed?
Theres still a section of the tracks that still runs from Covington to Danville and it stops at the CSX Railroad, and it ends at the wabash river, the Vermillion Valley Railroad owns that track, they use it for car storage, those tracks run behind my house.
I worked there as a teenager. I worked in the petting zoo part of the time. I led trail rides on horse back from 1992-1995. There were a couple of years where we used our personal horses for the trail rides and pony rides. The train was a huge problem as were many rides there. The train derailed many times while I worked there. It was a daily occurrence. Our horses were tied to a fence down along the back side of that train ride area. One time it derailed and it lurched toward three or four of the horses in the second turn on the train track. My personal horse and the barrel ponies that my sister and I used to run in barrel racing at shows pulled hard backward because the train that was now off the track and heading in their direction scared them. The old mare that my sister used to run in barrel racing at horse shows actually broke her lead rope trying to get away from it. Thankfully it didn't break through the fence. The maintenance man said that the train was built for a straight track. At least one with fewer curves and hills. It was also very old so getting parts for it was pretty much impossible. They had to adapt parts for it when there was a legitimate break down (not just a derailment). The ride that the video creator mentions several times was removed after it blew up. You know, the one where the floor drops out? Anyway people were injured in the ride failure. The mad mouse lost brakes one time. People were stuck on it for something like 45 minutes before they got it stopped. There was another ride where the safety bar/door failed and a woman was hanging out of the ride. Thankfully she was uninjured. Now fast forward to the maintenance man that I mentioned above being fired after he was injured. His injury was life altering and affected his arm. He had several surgeries to repair the damage. He was moving one of the antique cars to repair it. It was one of the two car rides that you drive on a track. Anyway something blew up through the seat of the car and injured his arm pretty badly. He dealt with permanent damage which included injury to the muscle of his forearm, the skin, and nerves. He had to file suit against the park because they terminated him in an attempt to avoid paying anything toward his medical bills. He won in court. Now there was a year that we stopped our involvement with the sub contractors that handled all of the animals mid season. They were neglecting their animals. They also didn't pay us as agreed to work in the petting zoo, pony rides, and trail rides. That would have been in 1993 or 1994. They actually had a woman buy tickets to walk along a trail behind the mini golf shack to see some big cats. When she went in there she discovered that some of the cats had died from neglect. It was awful. I loved leading the trail rides. It was a dream job for any teenage girl who loved horses. I was honestly afraid to ride the rides though after seeing some of the mishaps and maintenance failures. The maintenance failures were not because they had bad maintenance people. They guy who ran the park would open rides back up after they were closed by maintenance. He also canceled work orders and parts orders for rides and told the maintenance people to do whatever they had to do to get the ride running again. He worried more about revenue than safety.
it was great times
And what is that ? Where’s that at ?
I’ve seen it but I can’t believe I’ve seen it
I work at the Nickel Plate come out and see us I’d love to show you around if you haven’t been yet
Thanks from Frankfort
Chicago and Eastern ILLINOIS-
This video is a good start. Lot's of additional information to add but it would take about as long as this to cover each the lines properly. The lines from Indianapolis to Cincinnati include the Big4, NYC, PennCentral, Conrail line through Shelbyville and Greensburg, which was the main line, and the old CH&D line that became the B&O through Rushville and Connersville. When Conrail was looking to cut miles the two lines were compared and Conrail decided that one needed to go. The C&O was not going to drop the B&O line and had more on line traffic. That line now carries the Amtrak Cardnal Train 3 days a week. Some say the reason they kept the Shelbyville to Indianapolis segment of the Big4 line is so that the line didn't become a competing line with the line they kept to Concinnati. I don't know if that's true or not but it's an interesting Idea. There are stories like this about most of the lines through Indianapolis, if you want to explore them.
Nicely done. The Southern not acquiring the Monon when it was offered to them on a silver platter is a mistake that NS is still paying for down to this day. Pity.
Can’t believe how easy you guys have it today. We did everything by hand years ago. Including splitting rail with a chisel.
I have been their, now its a dollar store
😱 😨
Wow, now that’s a lot of companies!
The Monon offered itself to the then freshly minted president of the Southern Railway, Graham Claytor. Mr. Claytor still had a bad taste in his mouth from having to defend the railroad from what his boss did with the Central of Georgia as company counsel. The Southern and today's NS lost a grand opportunity for direct access to Chicago. It still hurts.
It's wild how they do their job. So cool.
My grandfather worked there as the janitor. His name was Harold Osborn. His employee badge number was #2. He retired very comfortably.

On the CIND, Shelbyville-Greensburg is abandoned. Also I saw that the Indiana and Ohio Railway has acquired the CIND line.
12:03 They picked this to display their best work….
Very nice beautiful
We went every year for my gpa's work's annual employee picnic. The Mouse was my first coaster and I loved it. It was what my cousins, brother, and I looked forward to the most. Then in '95 we went as usual. My (girl) cousin and I went in one car, and my brother and other cousin (boy) went after us. For the first time the ride scared the tar out of us. Our car literally tipped with every curve. We waited at the exit for my brother and we all looked at each other and said, 'Never. Again."
FYI, it wasn't called The Crawfordsville Mall, it was The Boulevard Mall. Someone posted they thought it opened in 1965, we moved to Crawfordsville in late 1968 and I believe the mall hadn't been open for very long at that point. Seems we drove to Crawfordsville looking at houses in the spring/summer of 1968 before we ended up in the Cox Addition west of town, and at that time I think the mall was still under construction.
I was born and raised in Frankfort IN. My dream was to be an engineer on the Nickel Plate Road. I kind of was, I hired out 9 years after the merger and worked all over Indiana (including in and around Frankfort) as an engineer and retired after 42 years. Your reports were very good. Glad to see this video.
Ross Perot told us nafta was fucked up; but we chose not to listen! Danville is one of the many victims of that “willful deafness”!
My Aunt would take my cousins, brother and myself multiple times during the summer. I still remember standing against the rotating wall as my aunt is waving from up above, the water log ride. And the damned Mad Mouse…. That thing scared me more than anything but I kept going to it, the last time I rode it was my brothers first ride on it. I remember trying to calm him down as he cried. I miss that place and it was sad watching it disappear. I grew up only 15min away. Thanks for the video
Grew up along side of this old Pennsy line. Spent much time walking the track into Greenwood as a kid. Glad to see the Louisville and Indiana doing well with CSX. I still live close. Great video. Keep up the good work.
