I. Largo, Cadenza - II. Andante - III. Scherzo - IV. Andante Maestoso Scored for bass trombone and strings, this work was commissioned by the trombonist David Taylor. It was premiered by him in Alice Tully Hall, New York on January 17th 1980. Throughout its 24 minutes, the work features the lyrical trombone part and is really a concerto in all but name. Performer: Douglas Yeo (bass trombone), T...
Alan Hovhaness Symphony No. 8 Arjuna Op. 179 (1947)

Performers: Lynda Cochran (piano), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ken Young (conductor) This intriguing work was originally conceived as a double concerto for piano, timpani, and small orchestra, according to Brian Q Silver, an expert on Indian music. It was entitled Ardos, after a mountain in Armenia near the Lake of Van, and exhibits a confluence of Armenian and Indian melodic styles. Accor...
I learned of his music in the 1980s. Mysterious Mountain Symph 2, and The Mount St Helens Symphony. When i lived in the Seattle area, i got to see them performed in person.

This is outrageously comical, or is it my ear-phones ? Newly replaced today - £1. I am hearing this at full blast... I'm slowly going deaf... Too much CAN in my younger days....?
Well fruity ! ....as we musicologists might exclaim ! I had to pause the vaudio to check that I wasn't hearing another video simultaneously ! I can't recall Hovhaness using the term "Scherzo" elsewhere. He's capable of humour in his music... perhaps even more so than Erik Satie. Has anybody noticed the "bum" note(s) in his ANAHID - they are written into the score... if I'm not mistaken. Try ruclips.net/video/kzAoiM-4MVQ/видео.html
so sweet...
One of music's originals. Who else sounds like Hovhaness? This symphony - and now most are available on YT, although not necessarily in modern recordings - is one of my favourites. Would love a new recording of this coupled with his masterpiece, Fra Angelico. Thanks for uploading, so well played by the Scottish forces.
Lou Harrison sounded like Hovhaness in his Suite for harp, Suite 2 for SQ, also a concertante work for Stokowski c.1954, Suite for Symphonic Strings (Louisville LP), Sym.2 (the last 2 had fully-engaged Ruggles forgeries too). Harrison was a big fan of Hovhaness, Partch, Ives/Ruggles (cf Monteverdi/Cavalli !). Daniel Pinkham Sym.2 is close to Hovhaness in style/warmth. I have a very fine perf. of Arjuna (Sym.8) on mono open-spool tape (prob. from private LP c.1960). Also FRA ANGELICO c/b Sixten Ehrling also 1960s on tape. How can I get them to YT upload ?
9:17 to 9:47, a nod to another proto-minimalist work, Ravel's Bolero.
Carefull ! LaMonte Young might read that ! It might tip him off his perch.... Actually I wish L.Y. all the best, and his Tortoise....
Initially really cool and interesting but after 10 minutes or so you long for something a bit different. Ten minutes later you realise you're not going to get it. I get that it's supposed to be ttance-like and hypnotic but the best minimalism - e.g. Steve Reich - is always slowly changing and moving so you get a sense of flow and direction. This feels more like the music from a video game or something, constantly looping over the same material.
What does "really cool" mean? Anything?
Too bad you don't get it.
wow... the interplay between the trombone and Bass Viol is incredible
Buenísima
great
Thank you. I have never heard this work. You are right, it is a concerto not a symphony, very much like Lousadzak.
Especially in the first movement, this symphony's featured instrument is quite imposing, even becoming nasty. and at its most aggressive, disquieting. The rest of the work however isn't all that unpleasant, and the final movement with its exceptionally lovely melody and emotional flow is a most fitting and satisfactory conclusion. I only wish I cared more for the sound of the bass trombone; it's not that the performance isn't excellent.
Most of Hovhaness' music is "mystical", here, the bass trombone adds the menace I think you're talking about and I agree with you. Perhaps an unusual instrument to choose as a soloist in compatibility with his style. However, many of his symphonies use the trombone in strange ways. Worth mentioning I think. I'm not a trombonist by the way :-)
@@DavidA-ps1qr -- Aw, come on, Dave....being a Trombonist bears no shame....especially in these sans-souci modern times....and it certainly does not make you A Bad Person. I was an Ocarina virtuoso in the Ozarks for decades...but got finally tired of running, hiding, lying. Be PROUD to be a Trombonist, brother!
When the piano enters at 1:33 it is SUPPOSED TO exhude the rhythmic and improvisatory vitality of a middle eastern oud (lute-like instrument). Sadly Lynda Cochran (piano) and Ken Young (conductor) totally miss the point and make the music sound like some Westernized morse code message. Importantly though, surely one of the first large-scale American minimalist pieces?
It is a bit ooga-booga. Is there another performance of this you recommend?
First time i found it in internet!!!! thanks
I love this
В почтении склоняюсь перед музыкальным гением Алана Хованесса! Спасибо за это видео!)
"Alexandre 2 years ago -- In reverence, bow to the musical genius of Alan Hovanessa! Thanks for this video!" I agree! Greetings from San Agustinillo!
Thank you for this upload! The music is remarkable....modal, hypnotic and uplifting! I love the whole work but 18:10-21:11 worth mentioning....
Always a pleasure...running into you again....at the oddest times and places......
@@steveegallo3384 Forgotten about this one, Stevie! Rodders used to have a load of Hovhaness but I think he removed them all due to copyright strikes. For time being, I'm not commenting on GF's uploads, not while he leaves that guy Edward's paranoid drivel on view I notice there are other spammers appearing there frequently too, not just Timtomtraddles and his multiphrenic "deserve more views dude" linguistic riches. @@steveegallo3384 Indeed! I continue to Watch This (Cyber)Space and it's always a pleasure to find stuff I haven't heard before. I hope Rodders' channel, almost fully-returned, continues to thrive with no more copyright strikes. Makes me marvel at how GF seems to be immune to such interferences, especially at his 4/5/6-a-day uploading habit. Where are his playlists? How are we supposed to refer back to see what he's published other than painstakingly looking at each upload one at a time?
