Passive Touches to the Hand: exploiting your opponent's hard work!
Making hand touches is difficult, especially when your opponent is aware of your efforts. However, what if you let them do all the work so that you can score a touch against their hand? The passive touch is a critically useful tool against the otherwise unaware fencer. Ensuring a stable en garde and hand position, it becomes easier to score touches against the hand when establishing the distance and remaining ready. Your opponent's efforts will create windows of opportunity in their preparation allowing you to sneakily secure touches against their hand.

Infighting VII.: Second Intention as Setup

Assistant Instructor Alizágada Tang works on applying Invitation and Second Intention as a setup for creating an infighting opportunity. Suitable for both training at the club and competing in tournaments, utilizing Second Intention by establishing a false attack is helpful in drawing out an action from your opponent while keeping a quick infighting action in reserve. These setups are not limit...

Just Hit the Foot, It's Not That Hard!
THANKS BUT THE ECHO IN THE STUDIO MEANT I COULD NOT GET A LOT OF WHAT YOU SAID...
I watched the first few lessons in the foil series. Very helpful! Many thanks. Hope to see more!
Glad to hear you found them helpful! More to come over the weeks.
Nice :)
Thank you!
Really good match 😍
I totally messed up my strategy at 5:02 but it ended up looking good 😭
Such squeaky shoes
I Love your Videos! Thank you very much!
Great video! I can really use this to convince my kids to do the right things. 👍👍👍 One question I have is that your protege there has the heel of his back foot raised most of the time. I have seen a few fencing oriented physical trainers suggested this as well. Is that the best practice nowadays?
Yes, this would be the ideal practice. Having the rear heel off the ground assists in, but not limited to, fluid and faster footwork. Push the heel down for stopping, changing direction (i.e. advancing out of a retreat), or initiating a lunge.
I am a newbie, what’s the difference between this drill and counterattack?
While a counter attack is, simply put, making a touch while avoiding being hit in turn, this action is using both a disengage - to escape a beat/parry against the blade - and opposition by extending against the fencer's attacking line, thereby establishing control over their weapon ensuring they cannot land their touch against you.
Ive been experimenting with a slight forwards turn of the back foot (ie slightly less than 90 degrees) in the en guard recently. I was wondering if you had any opinions on that. I’m seeing more and more fencers adopt that sort of thing. My initial thoughts are that this prevents the back ankle roll in the lunge and also sets the foot up so that you can spring off the achilles tendon into a lunge more explosively.
Lunging with the rear foot pointing forward (depending on extent) may increase the potential for injuring the tendon. As for the en garde, it would be prudent to maintain a conventional position as this can be adjusted depending on the needs of the fencer. Regarding ankle roll, proper training and conditioning would be better for prevention rather than changing the position of the foot, as this will not correct the underlying cause of the ankle roll (as causes for this are many: i.e. pulling forward on the front leg, weak ankle, overextended en garde position, etc.).
Thank u sir it is useful for our kids
Very helpful. Thank you!
Great stuff. Love it!
Much appreciated!
I've been watching (and learning) ad my grandson trains. I wish he had you as his trainer. Your video is very informative and calm. ❤
Would there be issues with this happening except the ref gives the point to the opponent because it was an attack in preparation on your part? Is it a matter of reaction time or does right of way simply negate this and give you the touch anyways. The way I as a student, who has little reffing experience within my club, is to judge it as: attack from left arrives, right fencer was in preparation even with right of way.
If this question is regarding attack/counter attack, it can be read as attack in prep. should the advancing fencer just be moving forward but not effecting an attack (i.e. no lunge, no extension). If this question is regarding counter time (i.e. effecting a parry while initiating an attack), attack in prep. wouldn't be called provided the blade was found in time. If the opponent lands their touch before the counter time parry, it would be considered an attack as the fencer trying to take the blade is not attacking the target and not finding the blade in time.
@ That makes a lot of sense, thanks for clarifying. These videos are really helpful.
Dude! Do a video on how to make an ironing-board fencing dummy! Please!
Thanks for the request! We'll see about putting that together in the future, once we re-acquire an ironing board ;)
Ouch
In the past video of your close range which will be the most effective against taller opponents
Infighting is situational and less dependant upon height advantage. No one action demonstrated is better or worse against a tall opponent as both fencers must be in close proximity. I would encourage the application of the most familiar and comfortable action and make adjustments based on the position of your opponent.
1. Keep moving, make sure there's enough distance (around the distance where your blades don't overlap) 2. Make some advances and see if opponent reacts, if they don't you can set up an attack
Thanks for replying my comment and solving my doubt. biggest fan from India ❤❤
Hello I am back, Umm in my past few compition I am thinking that I am not playing in my full potential means , the speed I have in not use and much more ...... The speed of my Perry repost,my finishing(attack)is not on my full potential (what I able do now ) and I cannot use it in my bouts leading me to loose sometime .. As a coach is something u can suggest me And thank u For your past help
Without seeing how you fence, there is not much that can be suggested. However, it is likely connected to your mental preparation. Try to identify why you fence better during practice and lessons and then compare that with how you feel while competing.
And what's the reason
Reason for what?
Sir why not they up and down ?
I do not understand the question.
Thank you for your effort teaching fencing
Very nice! My coach hasn't taught me parry 2 or point in line yet. I want to try these!
Sir biggest fan of you ❤❤
Thank you!
Wonderful! Thank you for this!
Thank you so much!❤
What if both fencers do point in line and run into each other?
If done at the same time, this would be read as simultaneous. If you can separate who initiated Line first, that fencer would possess RoW.
Terrible audio.
Hi I am back again, Sorry to message you so much, but I have so many queries about fencing game that I cannot spot from Asking from you. Some says if you master the footwork means you have already gain 80% advantage of chances of winning
I would not offer any percentage values but footwork is essential in fencing. Maintaining and developing your footwork will contribute to the rest of your training.

Which blades are used by your students or by you
Those who are actively competing are typically using BF FIE blades while those who are newer to fencing are using non-FIE blades.
nice and simple but the annoying background music is totally unnecessary and distracting
One of the original videos to the channel when things were still being figured out regarding editing ;)
Hi nice to meet you again I have a query :-if I did not use a single flick in my bout and the opponent have a good defence how much percentage is win-win situation for me ..See let say I have good speed than him
Can't offer a percentage as there's no data to really work off of for that. A flick is not a significant "fix all" action, but it does help diversify your capabilities against a variety of opponents. Essentially, it allows you to hit targets that are not directly facing you, such as the back, shoulder, etc., and is effective when distance is reduced.
Thank you so much! I used to toe touch but would have a terrible form so I would hit sloppily or miss completely. This video helped me greatly and that longer lunge touch I never thought about doing.
Hey I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but I am very new to epee and fencing in general but when you lunge is your back foot supposed to stay planted with the entire sole of your foot on the ground or are you supposed to let your foot angle. The reason I am confused is because in the video they angle their foot but my coach told me that you need to keep the sole of your foot planted. I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to point out an error in the video because that is not what I am trying to do I just want to know what the proper technique is. Sorry for the long comment.
As a general rule, you would want to keep your foot flat to the ground as this will reduce the risk of rolling your ankle when recovering from the lunge. However, in cases of deep lunges, the foot will drag and roll.
Idea for your next video: septime sweep and flick to shoulder :)
Presumably the prime is if you get parried going fot the shoulder flick?
Not exclusively. In this case, the two actions are being combined into the lesson with prime following the flick as you described.
Do u have a instagram account
Nice videos 👍
We do not have an active account at this time but are considering restarting our old one.
Nice 👌
Harvy u mean from s class?
Wowwww ziqi btw u suck haha
Omg can you do a video on the beneath the elbow hit 😮 ive been dying to actually land those consistently
A variation coming soon next week :)
Can you give me tips to play with tall fencer i am in foil
If attempting this against a taller opponent, no significant changes are required. However, if your opponent is standing up, this would not be a suitable means of landing a touch on the target area. Please see the other infighting options.
