The Pottery Monk Hippie
Добавлен 31 янв 2018
A major difference in Kilian’s work has been based on authenticity; he develops his glazes and clays, unlike most studio potters. Kilian started in clay at the age of eight and opened his ceramic studio in 2007 in the Inner Banks of North Carolina. His experience has yielded many accomplishments, such as creating the heritage pottery collection commissioned by North Carolina’s Cultural Resources for historic heritage sites and exhibiting his museum pieces in the exclusive Imperial Art Centre's HANDCRAFTED Exhibition of 2017 and 2022. He collaborates with Popular Forest, Old City Museums and Arboretum, and James City County (Jamestown) as a third-person interpreter, ceramic artist, and workshop instructor. Kilian specializes in heritage pottery and the history of the pottery trade. He operates a fully outfitted studio in Chatham, VA.

O Come, Emmanuel (The Life of Christ, Christmas reflection)
It's like I had a bad day, got distracted from my baking times. The whole kiln melted down. This sure does help make repairs. This melt down has never happened to me before in many previous firings. UGG, glad it's not to costly to make the repairs. Thanks a whole lot!
Will this cement work on any kiln? I have some repairs to do on my skutt and would rather not buy more bricks than I have to because of hairline cracks
Hi! - So, I also use Rutland Products Dry Mix 211 Refractory Mortar, which can be used on any kiln with a 10-cone range. I have a few more repair videos too. Cheers!
why did you not show dry fitting the tube assemble?
Lost the footage.
Can I use this on the top fire brick which has worn away a bit and is shedding dust?
Sorry, Lorrie; this is my first time seeing your comment. - Yes, but you'll need to be sure the brick you are repairing is dusted out well and then well wetted before applying the cement. Cheers!
Thank you!
great job! Thanks for showing the not-so-glamorous part of pottery. Oh wait, that's the whole part. hahaha Love this
The “whole part” … I like that! Cheers!
A lot to know here!
Indeed! Thanks for watching. Hope you are well.
When you fired this kiln, did the mortar flake off in place? I've tried applying a different product on a kiln in far worse condition and it flaked in many places, making it unusable for a glaze firing.
Thickness tends to play a part in chipping. Also making sure to prep the lid properly. If one doesn't have the mortar like "pudding" it's very easy to apply too much. We only need 1/16" thick! -- Give an update when you can!
Thank you SO much. I opened my kin after a studio move and 😱. The learning curve just keeps moving.
The learning curve is real, Jan! Cheers!
Should this be done to the bottom of the kiln also?
Hi Stephen! No need to. The reason for the coating is to reduce brick dust. - - Personally speaking, I find that since the lid is exposed to the most heat, as heat rises, it is prone contraction and expansion, causing cracks. I find the coating to help with prevention. Though, be sure to not lay it too heavily in the inside of the lid... it will bliste, crack, and then flake off. We only need 1/16" thick!
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure.
Looks a lot easier than is is, I'll wager, and it looks hard. 😂
😂
Gotta hit the hay right now, but you can bet I’ll be watching it tomorrow night! Cool beans, PMH. You know where I’m from. LOL
The upload will be here!
