I feel that even their choices in men are connected to their relationship with each other. Rhaenyra wasn’t afraid of her affection toward Alicent. She even seemed to enjoy showering her with it and watching her panic. She really liked her, and even thought her uptight nature was cute, or at least amusing. She would make jokes to convey her sincere intentions like to travel the world with Alicent and have fun together as just the two of them, and her dragon. Anyone who contested would have to be burned alive. Plus, no one had ever really told Rhaenyra “no” in her life. But Alicent, well, almost no one ever told her yes. She never even asked. She had to do whatever she was told to protect her father’s position, and connection to Rhaenyra. She also didn’t have a dragon, just gods. And her gods didn’t approve of her so even she had to say no to herself. Naturally, Alicent kept trudging through life doing what she was told. She married who she was told, even if it hurt so deeply being Rheanyra’s literal father. But she didn’t get to have feelings about it. She was so used to making others happy it was easy to ignore her feelings-it was compulsive. But Rhaenyra was told “no” for the first time in her life when her relationship with Alicent ended. She tried to resolve this deep disruption in herself by seeking out others who she shouldn’t be with, but this time getting a “yes”. First with Cole, then Daemon, and even accepting Laenor was a way to make anyone she was with during their marriage a very big “no”. She admits in her fight with Daemon that she took him as a challenge. These relationships were the only ones that could feel real enough to her after Alicent. If she didn’t have a present “no” infront of her, she would always want to resolve the one which affected her the deepest, Alicent. Later, when Alicent finally started to act for herself, she chose Cole. Criston Cole, the one she discovered broke the rules to be with Rhaenyra when she couldn’t. He was Rhaenyra’s sin. His loyalty to her, instead of Rhaenyra, validates a part of Alicent that believes she acted on the right course. That even Rhaenyra’s sin sides with her. They blame Rhaenyra, project onto her that she corrupts the righteous. She makes her feelings for the princess Rhaenyra’s fault. Until Alicent finally sins, and she chooses Rhaenyra’s sin, but far too late. Yet being with him is her last real connection to her relationship with Rhaenyra, and the closest she will get to being with her, even if just a part of her. The part they share, the part that is forbidden.

It’s not that Alicent gave her something special from 20 years ago, but that Rhaenyra gave it to Alicent and she kept it all this time despite how much she tried to hate Rhaenyra, or even how much Rhaenyra might have believed that she was hated at last. But she wasn’t. She was loved and that’s what Alicent hated the most. Being gay almost stopped this damned war 😭
