Exhibition video: Pasmore | Heron VIII São Paulo Biennial Great Britain 1965 - revisited
Thursday 7 November 2024 - Friday 31 January 2025
This exhibition of work by Patrick Heron and Victor Pasmore celebrates sixty years since they both represented Britain at the VIII São Paulo Biennial in 1965. The Biennial was a significant event for both artists and, also more broadly, for Britain as a country in establishing itself as one of the primary players in the development of abstraction on the international stage.
The selection brings together ten examples by each artist dating from the period 1952 to 1964. Many of the works were included in the original São Paulo show and together they give a sense of the scale and impact that the original display had on an audience largely unfami...

I have a love for figure drawing and to see his work for the first time bothers me that I had never seen it before. Mostly because he was alive in my lifetime and I only discovered him now. His work is ...in a word, excellent.

Hold a difficult pose for 45 minutes! Wow. I never ask a model to hold a pose for more than 20 minutes at a time, then break for 5 minutes to stretch and rest, before the next 20 minutes, and so on usually for a total of 4 hours. By then, I’m burned out and so is the model. I might do this for 3 days in a row depending upon medium.

I've had to hold a pose for 30 - 45 minutes at a time, but these weren't anything complicated, mostly standing or sitting, and some of those paintings took a few months to complete.

Hello friends... Richard Smith was artist in residence at U. of Virginia in 1967 and I was lucky to be one of his select group of students during that very important time in the development of his shaped canvas concepts. He was very inspirational in a very quiet way. Almost Zen-like as he described how important the 'craft' of his canvas shaping was in relation to the ultimate finished piece. Richard Smith will be missed.

Loved his work and ideas ever since I found a tiny catalogue, mainly just black and white illustrations, of his work in the library at art school… that was long ago in Galaxy far far away…. Seemed to me then, and still does, that his work was not only a joy to experience but that it was a deep commentary on how media and fine art work on each other… why isn’t he more well known and discussed? No idea…..
