Sorry this happened to you Mem. It's a beautiful part of the country to tiki tour through. Busy summertime gets very crowded and even paid campgrounds can be full. Good advice and learning to share. Every Council unfortunately is different and although freedom camping Council ambassadors got government funding to focus on education....the enforcement team can ve very vigilant in popular coastal areas. Thames Coromandel Kaikoura and QueenstownLDC are similarly strict. It does look like revenue gathering to many. We also witnessed the same enforcement levels in Coromandel at limited restricted sites over New Year 2024. Had stopped at that Bay for morning tea then moved on. Sadly ..thanks to a small number or irresponsible humans who don't understand kaitiakitanga in Aotearoa, all of us responsible sel contained campers now cannot expect the same rights and privileges as we once enjoyed....thanks to the changes in law 2023. We now have to prove our responsibility and #leavenotrace...and can get disproportionate fines for doing nothing against the protection laws outlined in the Freedom Camping Act. Sad ...but a truth we all have to learn about.
