    How did you write on the tiles before your bisqued them?

    • @HendrienHorn
      @HendrienHorn Год назад

      You can use an underglaze pencil, or I painted it with a black underglaze paint. Underglazes are not glazes, but rather stains that are used for painting on pottery. It must not be thick, and be watered down when you write at the bottom of a tile that will be touching the kiln. Otherwise it can stick to your kiln. To be honest if the tiles are still leatherhard (you can touch them and they don't warp) rather use a normal pencil and engrave the numbers. The lead from the pencil will fire away and the engraved part won't cause problems. As a beginner, if you have not yet worked with underglazes, you don't want problems in the kiln. Hope thay helps!

      Hi there, I am using underglazes not slip. They are also called stains in other parts of the world :). So it is not a glaze that you would use to coat a piece, but rather special pottery paints that can be used for decoration.

    Hey. I have a question. So I painted my work with white underglaze but it look weird. I just used the under glaze staright from the container. Do I add water to it? So that it would stick to my work?

    • @HendrienHorn
      @HendrienHorn 2 года назад

      Hi there! Yes add some water. I usually get a small container and pour in a bit on underglaze and a really small amount of water. Then mix with a brush. Make sure you are using a soft paint brush, they always work best. Underglazes dry so quickly so if you feel some parts on your pot are not smooth, use your finger and softly run it over the painted area to smooth it a bit if it looks too thick. I hope that helps!

    Thank you for sharing your insight, I found it valuable! Do you have any other advice for handling/treating the clay itself? Did you need to add water to get a certain consistency? Is there anywhere online that you can recommend I visit for more information? I will be starting a 3D clay-printing research project soon, and I'm trying to learn all that I can before the printer arrives. I have extensive experience with standard FDM 3D printers, but not so much with clay!

      @HendrienHorn 2 года назад

      Hi there! Thank you for your question, and yes clay has a mind of it's own so it is good to know the basics. I am actually releasing a Udemy course at the end of June on all things clay and 3d printing. May I send you the link when it is up? Clay printing is testing, testing and more testing. Clay consistency will vary for different printers, but it is always good to add water and to re-work the clay. Different clays also work differently. Porcelain is not recommended for beginner potters, so look at Stoneware or Earthernware clays (terracotta). If you would like a one on one class on the basics of pottery you are welcome to DM me on Instagram @hendrienhorn.
