Working LEGO Dragline - 16:9 Edition

My LEGO dragline excavator. I've built some cable operated excavators before, but I wanted to have a go at a dragline. These were a form of steam shovel with the ability to pick up large amounts of soil at a time due to the bucket's long travel, naturally, they switched to diesel power as steam shovels did.

First of its kind LEGO Vacuum Engine?
sorry but I'm very mechanically inclined and realized that you actually have a 4 speed with a high and low
Which makes it an 8 speed what do you think an 18 speed is
Nice
Man I have pulley swapped som mowers
Go to my other channel for updates on the mower (pulley swap coming up)
one of the best vac. engine + transmission here. make a test on how much torque it can produce, maybe adjust the cylinder count. impressive but simple build you've done!
Torque used to not exist but now it has plenty for a 2 stud stroke engine. Idk how you youd measure it though. It probably helps that it has 2 power strokes per revolution. I might do a 2 cylinder double acting LVE, but probably as more of a steam engine, I thought about doing a v twin version of this engine but idk. A multi cylinder version would definitely be cool but I might not have quite enough pieces. this was my first working lve btw which is why I dont want to take it apart
This is now my first video to hit 10k views including shorts!!!
A thousand views already... I dunno where my views were for 5 months but I guess YT is making it up to me now
That’s actually really cool. I’m still not a fan of this style of throttle just because it’s a lot of strain on the bricks and most will break if you use to strong of a vacuum (that’s why mine looks weird) but for regular vacuums it’s a great design!
I don't know what you mean by strain on the bricks. It won't break because the slide is built sideways, and 3 bricks and a tile in height is exactly the same as 4 studs in width so the slide fits perfectly. The bricks behind the slide keep it from tilting towards the vacuum and that gray snot brick in front of the slide also used to have a 1x1 round stud on it to help hold the slide in, but it wasn't needed. I guess maybe if you have a really insane vacuum it might put some strain on the bricks but that's exactly what's happening inside the engine, isn't it? 😁 If you run your LVE at all then you're probably ok with a bit of wear and tear on the pieces....
It's pretty sturdy as long as you don't use dark red bricks 🤣🤣🤣
now that I think of it, this probably would work even better with a butterfly throttle. It's just that butterfly throttles don't work very well in my experience.
Oh I’m using a heavy duty wet/dry vacuum it’s strong enough to deform your face from half a foot away but if you make a tutorial on it I’ll try it on my vacuum engine (don’t worry I’ll tag you)
I'll post some pics of it on the community tab. That's DF-speak for "I'm going to, but it might be a few centuries."
lmao
Nice, looks like a concept car

I tried to upload an over 60 second short the day they were supposed to become a thing and it didn't work. I guess it still doesn't want to work. Stupid youtube.
This video has 2 views and a like already in 3 minutes... this dumb little video that doesnt have anything to do with my normal content is probably gonna get like 3,000 views.... 😂
I view and enjoy
intéressant. explorer, tenter de pénétrer Monk.
Nice music gives me ragtime vibes kinda
Also these types of engines “wobble engines” as I call them because they are usually very unstable when it’s just one cylinder. They don’t produce much power but lots of speed. I used to have a steam engine toy that worked exactly like this but it melted unfortunately. But that never produced much power as it was even though it was working on about 4 bars of steam. So yeah just keep that in mind otherwise very cool engine!❤
Hi I’m the first to watch your video 😊🎉
Ok, well, the compact 6x6 video was actually uploaded a month before this was made, and I made this almost 2 weeks ago... time does fly, and it really doesn't care if you're having fun or not!
You should try to attach a engine to it
yeah I wanted to build an LVE powered excavator but not this one
@@Dudeface167 why not?
@@samueloliverLegoVacuumEngines Idk
Also, new piano :)
Thanks for the additionally evidence... Nonetheless I think there are way better and exact ways to measure the speed... I don't think you are faking things and it's great so see people trying things like that, so don't get me wrong, I believe you! And I really like your design! I just mentioned that it's not the most accurate way to prove the speed for something like a record where it comes down to every single rpm...
It was more than the previous "record", and somebody wasnt likely to break it by less than maybe 100 rpm, so it doesnt have to be perfect, but if 2 notes arent the same, if youre not tone deaf you can hear it. But I don't think your 1200 rpm was any kind of a record tbh....
As said, yes it is a creative way to measure it but it isn't very correct... Also if you don't want to switch measuring methods, at least don't use your keyboard, use a frequency measurement app or program...
Im a musician I know what Im talking about
@@Dudeface167 I am too and I know that this isn't an exact measurement method
well so what
Piston slap?
the piston can't tilt since it's stabilized by the piston rod but I guess the valve can tilt a little
What can you make with this engine?
?
10/10 engine 👍
I'm too late for this to really matter, but in my experience, running the engine for a few hours with a motor or by hand can wear the plastic enough to remove friction and finally allow the engine to purr. Most of the issue is just that there is a lot of perimeter rubbing against the walls for such a small piston and valve. As you size up, this ratio of perimeter to piston surface area shrinks and your engines get more powerful.
I had it turning over on a pf motor for like 4 hours
@@Dudeface167 Damn, that engine would not live
no, it refused to even try
Sounds so good and incredibly smooth
Oh cool it’s double acting that’s pretty cool!
Didja forget your double acting lve was inspired by this one? lol
@@Dudeface167oh it’s that engine!?
That does run very smoothly you could make it run smother with Vaseline I’ll be mentioning this in an upcoming video. Also thanks for uploading the content stream was running dry😂
I'll upload the vid on the oscillating flat 4 as soon as I can free up enough space to save it off iMovie... but I have tons of stuff like this that I never uploaded so I'll post that in the meantime.
@@Dudeface167nice I hope to see you upload more often I like your content!
I don't think it's the smoothest but nice
Nor do I, but sometimes clickbait isnt a terrible crime as long as its not too absurd! (You didn't believe it, but it caught your attention and you watched the video.)
Actually not, just looking for different valve designs, that's why i clicked
I posted a couple videos on my channel where you can see the valve and stuff. But if it didn't catch your attention, how are you here? 🤨 Seems to me like you noticed the video.
Because i saw It was a 1 cylinder but i noticed It was a bit big so that's why i was curious

Can doors open can hood open? And can you make pls tutorial pls 😭
no to the first 2 questions... and the last one too sorry lol
It growls like a real Screaming Jimmy, especially when you down gear and throttle up. It sounds like every big truck I have heard with that type of engine. Are you sure that you aren't a mechanical engineer or a trucker?
Thanks, it sure does, which is surprising since it's a single cylinder steam engine model that was never even supposed to be fast or powerful when I built it! 😁 I'm 14 so I'm a few years away from that....
Here it is running a long time ago before I made major improvements to the ports and stuff. m.ruclips.net/user/shortsn1ZRmH9zJdo
Careful the big wheel doesn’t fly of in ur face! 😂 (joke)
Move your fly wheel in on the axle and put support on the out side helps with rpms
I want one
Did not know you played piano AND do it very well
I started posting my music stuff on a different channel because this channel was becoming more LVE oriented. @Miles_Wiedenhoeft that channel doesnt really have any audience unfortunately
How did you make the gear box?
you can see it in much better detail in the linked video if you somehow didnt see that one
Wait, yeah you did, you were the first person to comment on it. But that was a month ago
Cool! And maybe you could try rice instead of popcorn, it might be easier to scoop.
I suggested that too!
Dude post more often so I can watch it! I want to support your algorithm :)
I used to upload a lot, but I just haven't been very motivated lately. I do have a crapload of videos I never uploaded though, I think I'll put them all together into one big video at the end of the year.
