Shishi Lion traditional dance
The Shishi Lion swallows the child!
This performance is known as “ shishimai,” a traditional dance that is performed during Obon on Ishigaki island.
In hopes that the baby will grow up to be healthy, the parents will allow the Shishi lion to bite their child.
The Shishi lion will bite you if you’re not behaving.
If you’re bitten, it’s believed that you will behave well.
