WONDERFUL TO HEAR THE FIFE OF PETER EMERICK. This is the conclusion of a text exchange I had with Pete about the interpretation of this tune.

nice 🥰
Outstanding drumming, and what a tune btw
Drums held up well even in the intense humidity
awesome!
Marvellous ✌️
Yeah!!! This is awesome!
Huh? What? I'm confused.
My Nanio is a great Robert Burns tune! I like this version compared to another one in the manuals that is quicker and has more notes on the fife! 🤣
I know that guy! He's a famous punk rocker in a famous garage punk band!
I have drums
Noticeable variations in the fife tune from Cushing to Robinson and Hazeltine
I was there as one of the Americans
Cool beating; never cared much for the tune.
Is this an American Civil War March? I've never heard it before.
Tune published in late 18th century but likely older. Many tunes I’m doing these short videos for were certainly still around during the Civil War but my focus for this series of videos is fife and drum music from the later 18th century through about 1840 when the American militia system fell out of fashion.
Yes exactly. Titled drums are the reason for the different grip of the left hand stick.
What function does keeping it tilted like that serve? I figure on a drum pad like that you're not worried about acoustics. Is it to replicate how a marching drum sits?
also appears in Rumrille & Holton as Queenstowne Heights
you’re obviously comfortable with the sticks, good stuff
Pretty cool
Perhaps the earliest written version of Yankee Doodle in America.
Hey Sam! You bleaching your hair now or are you just getting old like me? 😉
Must be the bright light😂
Is that a fifth playing???
You mean a fife? Yes.
A fife
Interesting. We always used Trip to O. When we played the similar tune The Farmer
we used Haymaker for a beating.
Super crisp!
Excellent !
cool ! sounds great with Mass. Collection beatings.
My first favorite tune at age 9 in 1976. Somewhat haunting and somber yet still martial.
Good pairing of tune and beat.
Stuck with a German theme😊
Where can I find the fife music to For That and A That?
Aird. Not sure what volume
Here is the corrected drum beating.
Excellent!
enjoyed the field music *LIKED* the video pards.
Care..dc's
What version of 3 camps are you playing here?
No sure of the tune source. I was playing Potter. Ben was playing a reveille he knew.
Haha, the Aquabats!
I dont care what they say. I personally think this is a smarter stack than caseys and makes a more solid and symmetrical stack.
Just messing around with different versions of the same tune from different periods. 3 tunes here-Farewell to whiskey, Jefferson and Liberty, and Campbells are Coming. First time through using beatings from 1790s-1820. Second time through using beatings from 1850s-60s.
Nice! clean accents
Thanks! 😃
Where was this at?
Old Sturbridge Village
What tune is this? I don’t think I have ever heard it before. One day I hope to make it up there for Militia Muster Day! Looks and sounds fun!
Red Coat Fifer. Drum beat Common Time 4th mode, Mass. Collection of Martial music 1818
Tune is from Cushing; The Fifer’s Companion published 1805
How convenient of a title! 😊
Stack arms drill...or why you avoid stacking arms with the one-eyed clumsy guy...
well done pard *LIKED* the video --LT
Also what tempo are you playing these tunes at? I assume the Quickstep tempo?
Roughly 75 for slower stuff. Sped up QSs as a guess of what was reasonable for a faster militia pace. I don’t know what to think about that 120 speed. I certainly don’t have the ability to play most of those at that tempo and I’m guessing a number of c. 1830 drummers couldn’t either.
I guess it’ll always be a mystery. That’s the fun in it…some things we will never know. I do think I had a conversation about tempos but I couldn’t really remember.
Can I request…that you make a video of the Klinehanse 1850s manual?
I spent time with that one about a decade ago when I learned all of the duty for a park program at Chancellorsville. My recollection is that it’s a big rip off of Ashworth. Will have to revisit it sometime.
I have heard the same. Some interesting tunes in that book as well.
Those drums sure sound great, in spite of the heat.
I miss doing this so much
Very educational thanks.
Excellent. 🥁
Where did you get that sling?
