Skiathos | So good to be back

After 3 years away, we finally went back to our favourite Greek island for a holiday in July 2022. We stayed with our amazing friends, the Makaratzis family, in their stunning Skiathos Diamond apartments in Kolios (link below). Hi, yes there was an exodus of boats as we were sat in the square having a frappe. It was so peaceful. What a beautiful town.
did you visit Myrtos or Petani Beach or Mellasani Cave? After watching your video i tought that you were on less crowded places? I was in Kefalonia 3 weeks ago.
Hi, no, we didn’t visit those places this time. There’s so much to do on Kefalonia it’s hard to do everything in one visit and still leave time for chilling! Did you have a good time when you were there?

Chris at Veronica's.. mmmmm I bought a bracelet there and one of the stones came out, took it back the following year to see if they could repair it , he said he could but would have to send it to the workshop. He took my name, address etc and said he would post to me when done . It never arrived, I emailed several times, never got a reply, never got my bracelet back! Very bad customer service !!!

how does it compare to Skiathos ?
They are both absolutely stunning islands and we love them both having been to each many times over the past 30 odd years. Both have stunning beaches and amazingly beautiful scenery but they are quite different due to their difference in size. Skiathos is really tiny in comparison to Kefalonia. So if you like everything handy and close by, all pretty much accessible by bus, Skiathos is perfect. If you like to get out and about and drive around, Kefalonia gives you the ability to do that. I couldn’t choose a favourite because I genuinely love them both.
@@ciderfromalemon7658 thanks for the reply, we’ve been to skiathos twice and love the place, in fact we’ve just came back from there last week, we fancy Kefalonia next year for a change and was hoping it was similar to skiathos
Hi Dave. Although they are different, I don’t think you’d be disappointed by Kefalonia. The people are friendly, there are loads of different resorts to choose from, all different, beautiful scenery and wonderful beaches. There’s also loads of history there if that’s your thing. Having been to 14 Greek islands and being an absolute lover of all that Skiathos is, I’d have no hesitation in recommending Kefalonia.

Thanks for this. We are off to Kefalonia in July after many years visiting other Greek islands. This has really helped us plan our itinery ❤ We have 2 Greek dogs we rescued while we were actually on holiday in Crete in 2016/19, hope we don't find others in EFL! Running out of room! X

Which one would you say is better? Kefalonia or Skiathos? I think I am gonna visit Skiathos next year because I like watching those airplanes landing.
Thank you so much for your comment. It’s so hard to say which is best because they are so different. We really love them both. But if you like watching airplanes land close up, Skiathos is definitely the place ✌️

We are off to skiathos on 7th Sept, staying in Troulos. Any tips for places to go, things to do
Thank you for commenting. We love the beach where you’re staying in Troulos and there are some really nice places to eat there. We’ve stayed there a good number of times. We’ve also stayed in Kolios. Skiathos town is beautiful and a must visit day and/or night. Only a short bus or taxi ride away. Or getting a water taxi into town from one of the nearby beaches at dusk is also amazing. We’d also recommend hiring a car for a couple of days to visit the beaches at Mandraki, Elias Mandraki and Agia Eleni (the latter for the sunset). That said, you can get to those 3 beaches by bus and a bit of a walk if you don’t fancy hiring a car. A boat trip from the town to Skopelos and Alonissos is also nice and you sometimes see dolphins. These are a few of our favourite things to do. It’s one of our absolute favourite islands and whatever you choose to do, we hope you have a wonderful time✌️

@@ciderfromalemon7658 well we were due to go on 7th but was cancelled due to the floods that happened the day before. What a nightmare for the island and the people. We have rebooked for next though so fingers crossed for that

Looks great. Not sure where to stay. Is there plenty of bars and tavernas in Skala?
Hi, thanks so much for your comment. We really love Skala. The main street you can see at the start of the video has a really good selection of bars and tavernas and there are also a good number of really great ones down the streets that come off the main street too. There are also bars and tavernas both ways on the front too facing the beach. It’s quite a compact place Skala so really easy to explore and find places that suit your taste.

I haven’t been( yet) but I have foodie friends who adore Mikelatos Restaurant, family run, great food, wine ,service,atmosphere.
On this trip our favourites were definitely The Old Village and Manor House. Ta Pitheria was also really good.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. We hired a car from DiffeRent in Skala while we were there this time. You can see the office from the view from our balcony at the start of the vlog. Just popped in 2 days before and ordered it. You only need your driving licence. We got an Astra (it was random) for 2 days and it cost €100. We’re going back later this year and we’ve hired a car for the whole trip (8 days) from the airport for £155 with Jet2. So much cheaper in advance I think. The roads are really good, much better than we have experienced on other islands, signposting is fine and parking was no problem wherever we went, including Argostoli. I would 100% recommend getting a car and seeing more of this beautiful island. ✌️

Hi We came home a few weeks ago, before the heatwave. We were there in the middle of June and it wasn’t too busy at all. It is a really beautiful island. Hope you have a lovely time when you visit.
Great to see family(I presume) holidaying together. I’ll be there with my wife and another couple in four weeks,none of us have been to Kefalonia before, looks great! Just a suggestion, you need to look happier( joking). Entertaining and informative video( unlike a lot of the self indulgent crap that’s posted).

Hi. If you left a comment on our video and it’s not here any more, it’s because I spotted a mistake in the original upload (that I just couldn’t live with) so I corrected it and re-uploaded it. Sorry!
Quite a few years since we were there. Remember beautiful beaches on the south coast covered in debris washed over from the mainland as a result of the dreadful fires earlier in the year. We were on Koukounaries when it first came in and in the distance looked like an oil slick approaching. Apart from that, also a violent thunderstorm where we slid down the muddy road from the monaster then sitting in the car by the harbour with the rain bouncing a foot off the water and thinking we could be doing this back home by Padstow harbour. Not finished, by now dark and everywhere closed we set off to drive back to the hotel at Troulos hoping to find somewhere to eat. No such luck, the road continually lit by lightning, didn't need headlights and though we did see one taverna open but the rain too heavy to get out of the car. Hotel part flooded and Greek dancers taken to their boats. Still, we finished up with a nice can of soup between us. Another nice memory was of a visit to the dog rescue centre nearby, run by a British couple ( still there? ) who told us that during the dreadful fires, for safety they had freed all the dogs to roam and after the fires they had to all returned to the sanctuary. Yes would visit again but think unless you are just a beach lover, one week rather than two is enough. Just my opinion though.
