    As a University of Michigan guy living in Illinois I never understood why something that is done out of respect with traditional dress and dancing could be considered disrespectful. If anything it was neat to see and kind of educational. It's not like Illinois was running a cartoon caricature out there or something like F troop t.v. show!

    @RockonKISS1122 It's people like you that got Chief taken away. Chief Illiniwek was not a real person, he was a representation of the Illini Confederation--a group of tribes that inhabited lands around the Illinois region. If you are going to share your opinions on this type of issue, make sure you are informed. A lot of people want to see the Chief come back and the only way that will ever happen is if people like you shutup. sincerely, U of I undergrad

    @lumpyhumpy Dude dont even start shit when you dont know ur facts. CHIEF ILLINIWEK was a real person! He is the one who volunteered to be the Mascot so dont even get shit started when u dont know the facts. You just wish that your fav school had a mascot like CHIEF ILLINIWEK! He wanted the tradition to continue thats why they continued it. The Illini wouldn't have kept doing it if the Native Americans didnt want them too. NCAA was the ones who told them to stop using it. Get ur facts staright!!!

    Great video. Now that emel jones is gone bring back the CHIEF!! I thought Chief meant the leader. There's a Chief in all groups.

    One more thing, I wish groups like ESPN, ABC and other such media outlets, Illini merchandise retailiers etc, would stop being so chicken shit about using the Chief Illiniwek logo for televised sporting events and on merchndise representing the University of Illinois! The NCAA never said the school had to stop using the Chief Illiniwek logo.... I can't stand the use of the over enlarged "I" with ILLINOIS written through it! Chief logo one of the BEST in all of sports!

  • @imperialscot

    NCAA SHOULD ALSO MAKE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY GET RID OF THE USE OF CHIEF OSCEOLA REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE SEMINOLE TRIBE IN FLORIDA THINKS! Rediculous argument period! I wish people would remember that an actual indian chief donated the attire used by Chief Iliniwek! "GO ILLINI!"

  • @CheKazzo

    Yup, and what really pains me is that the costume is authentic, not a replica, the dance is authentic, meaning, he went out of state and was trained BY Native Americans to do the dance. Obviously those who are against it are against their own history if you think about it. There are so many Native American mascots that REALLY stereotype and generalize and are extremely racist. If anything, U of I set the example of what a proper Native American Mascot should be.

  • @tennisboy800

    After seeing it in person today, i have to say that the issue is about how you look at the situation. If it is strictly the few minutes of dance, i can see how it could be deemed racist. however, if you look at it for what he represents, then that isnt racist at all. The chief unites the people. whether you know the person next to you or not, you will put your arm around them and sing. The chief stands for respect, unity, and everything else that the school stands for.

    look im like 1/4 native american and i dont see how in the hell its disrespectful to indians... sure im not full blooded but the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma who were relocated from illinois think so, becuase it doesnt represent the illinwek confederacy becuase chief is a souix indian so what its a perfect replica of a native american and was in no way ment to disrespect anyone all i want is for the NCAA to allow chief to be returned to the U of I

    OK, how is it OK for you to say some shit like "nothing is sacred when it comes to us white people"...thats a pretty generalized statement, almost a racist statement. And to say anything about global warming is ridiculous...10 year cooling cycle (and if the world can cool itself down, why cant it warm itself up)

  • @ROdblS
    @ROdblS 16 лет назад

    If Chief was so damn offensive then why did they even allow him to be shown on ESPN for his last performance...that by itself shows how much bullshit the whole deal is...fuck all you haters....Long live the Chief!!!

  • @Lawsuit

    There's no such thing as a Chief Illiniwek. He was made up by white students. A funny thing- fancydancing is done by athletic, young Indians. The only Indian with that many feathers (each one representing some amazing deed) would be too old to dance, much less jump around as the Chief does.

    at this point, i really don't care if your feelings are hurt. If your body is hurt, that's valid. If your career is hurt, that's valid. If your feelings are hurt, I could care fucking less. I liked the chief. 75% of campus wants to bring the chief back. I wear chief shirts 50% of the time, Live with it!

    I'm Irish. I wonder if I could raise enough ruckus to get Notre Dame's Leprechaun abolished. I mean, the stereotype that all Irish people are fighters is derogative and hurtful.

    whats a little? and what presence does the "little" native blood have in your life. See thats what i dont like about half bloods sometimes they use the "little" blood they have to make comments like these. Making claims to something they are not?

  • @hopigirl
    @hopigirl 16 лет назад

    I think they did make a mockery of native american traditions their upholding the stereotype of indigenous peoples. Its also the fact that white people dont have the same cultural and religious views as indigenous tribes of what is sacred. im happy the mascots gone because it means this stereotype of indigenous tribes can finally end.

    You may not be white, but you're definitely racist. A sweeping statement of an entire race is pretty much the definition of racism. I grew up in Illinois and loved the cheif. I'm white and don't apologize for it. I guess on the down-side, I can't blame racism when something doesn't go my way.

    hahaha, funny the university of illinois has a lot to learn about dancing, regalia and much more about the native people, ive been dancing grass and fancy and this dance "chief illiniwek" does is nothing close to any dance done at powwows if you want the real deal try and get a native person to dance for the university, but i can guarantee you will find no native partaking in this foolish mistake, we honor or traditions with real heritage, this so-called dancing really needs to stop, thank you

    Because ANtive Americans aren't mascots. They are real people who look nothing like this. You go to college to learn more than just an education. You learn about the world and it's diversity. These mascots ignore diversity and reinforce stereotyping with federal money. Great job, America!

  • @quicksilverwade

    A mascot without moccasins? Tell me, where are his damn moccasins? Every regalia begins with moccasins.
