My grandfather worked on board on a ship for union castle ,don't no what is called . From Southampton to cape town would love to know how to get some information on which ship, he was a stoker as far as I know and also worked on the PS Ryde from Portsmouth to island of white. I'm guessing he would have been a young teen then went to fight in the war came back and worked again at see before he finally took a job in the water board in Gosport. His name was Philip John Hale but went by the name John .

Great video of all the old ships sadly all gone now… photos of the Red Duster flying high & proud.. such a shame all the British shipping companies all sadly gone now or operation under the foreign flag.. 46 years at sea still going strong👨‍🍳 miss the cargo and reefers I used to sail on🥲🥲🥲😪😪😪

Anyone remember sailing off Cape Town, and the Cape rollers were quite rough?

As a NZPO shore based coast radio station radio operator, 1964-1991, I worked a lot of these ships on HF CW. Including Canberra, Orcades, Oronsay, Ruahine, Tijilwah, Papanui, etc. to mention a few. I definitely remember Patonga as an infrequent caller. Thanks for the memories of ships since gone to razor blades, long ago. Later you mention the scene with Himalaya and Chitral, both are also on my list of contacts.

Got to see the remains of The Himalaya in Kaoshiung when we arrived there to scrap SS Nevasa.

Windsor Castle was layed up in the Fal in the late 90's. She still looked well maintained then, as I recall.

My parents,sister and I travelled regularly in the 50s from cape town to Southampton ..Capetown castle,Windsor castle,Edinburgh Castle plus Caledonia in 1957 we were Sally and Susan Hutchinson.i remember dressing up for Father Neptune boarding!!

Couldn’t help but shed a tear watching and listening to the narration on this beautiful ship. I’m 87 now and remember with happy memories of 1964 when my husband and I as immigrants (10pound poms) sailed from Southampton thru Lisbon Portugal thru Suez on to Fremantle in Australia. We had a gloriously wonderful holiday, in fact best we ever had even though we had very little money. I shall never forget. Thank you ORIANA❤

Thanks so much for taking the time to post these wonderful films, Joe, they brought back many happy memories. I remember as a lad of seven, being a stowaway on Harrison Line's Custodian from Liverpool to Salford. My late father was a member of the deck crew, and he took me onboard MV Custodian, to pay off in Manchester, I was told to stay in his cab.in and remain very quiet. You can imagine how thrilled I was to be part of this adventure ! I never went to sea due to ill health as a young man, but spent the whole of my working life in the Shipbroking and Freight forwarding business. From the day I made my illicit voyage,I knew I wanted to be around ships. It was a very rewarding career, which took me to the Far East and many other interesting places. Very best wishes and thanks again for posting.

Excellent video. Brings me tears. I’m know 57 but as a teen cruised on her in the Pacific in 1979(so she was in Australia by then doing cruising). Then we did another cruise around 1982/3. She was a wonderful ship to wander round. So many lovely rooms both large and small. Some quite hidden. And a big range of shops sprinkled throughout the ship and 3 pools.

Omg the memory of working in the British India head office my first employment after school in 1966. They were the best days all my colleagues were awesome to work with. The ships like Kenya ,Karanja,in the video were my everyday involvement as were all the BI fleet. My involvement was in the technical then marine departments .happy days a great company to work for. I'm older now and sailed on QM2 not that long ago .great ship. In my lifetime seen Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth,and the three new Cunard passenger ships all under way. Looking forward to Queen Anne next year. Back in 1968 on Nevasa then in 1969 on Uganda did my first two cruises on the educational school ships being staff it was at one pound a day.thats how brilliant British India was to staff. I later did more on Nevasa , then Himalaya and the cargo ship Chakdara to Europe . I started my ship photography passion in the time i worked in the London royal docks. I thought the Kenya was a great looking ship and still have her photos from that' era. I still photo ships today in Sydney including the 3 Queens this past few days. I also found Resilient Lady and Celebrity Edge interesting.

I loved that ship. I remember my dad Jack Scott brought me on it with my mom. I was 4 years old, I had a Fanta orange soda. I've been trying to find Jack Scott but to no avail. Did you know him? I don't know what rank he was but I remember he stored his car here in Vancouver it was a 65 or 66 mustang convertible California plates copper colored. Ide love to find my dad

Gentler times indeed. I was at sea 1976 until 82 when British crews & traditional cargo ships came to a sad end. Fond memories & missed to this day. Always think I was born 10 years too late.

Still remember crossing the equator on the Edinburgh castle as a child, 1974 I think. Think there might have been a smaller celebration for the tropics. Have a photo of me cuddling a lion cub on board at some point during the journey (possibly on arrival in Cape Town), but crew might remember if this cub was onboard during the journey. I won the children's disco dancing competition much to my sisters disappointment as she fancied her chances. Not that I could dance. Quite a lot of fun for a child. Pity those that never got to experience emigrating like this.

Oh dear! No baseball caps, flip flops, tattoos, water slides et al, the horror of things to come, these crimes committed aboard Lego boxes, no sheer, very little style, with propellers stuck on the back!

Oh when ships were ships, exciting, glamorous, adventurous, elegant with a real sense of purpose!

Some great vessels here. I sailed on SS&A ships from 1971 to 1982 and remember seeing the Hobart Star in Auckland. I was a J/E onboard the M.V.Amalric and the Star boat had a main engine failure on departure; I recall them asking if we could lend them some spares as we had the same main engines (9 cyl MAN).

Sailed on her with my parents December 3-21, 1981, San Francisco to Sydney. I was 18 years old and she was my first and only cruise to date. Very fond memories of the ship, and the crowd of young Canadians I hung out with the whole time. Thanks for this video memory

Crewed on the Edinburgh Castle for seven voyages in the early 70,s

I done the last five years on Reina del Mar mostly as Deck Steward, a great little ship!l also did a couple of voyages on the Pen and then the Vaal then Clan line ,King line and the rest until made redundant in 1982, we had a great Captain whilst l was on Reina,Captain Alister Sillars,great days ,Jt wagg
