In bright and windy conditions we had some excellent sport at the weekend at fly only reservoir Hury, part of Northumbrian Water. Mainly fishing either side of the dam these hard fighting rainbows certainly gave us some fun

Over head cast with a change of direction
the rod is a mere exttension of ones arm.and we have to feel everything through the rod line and where the line is oclock if yiou like...all about feel then let your arm become the rod im sounding lke bruce lee i know but this is how it is we also have to visualise mentally what we feel the water doing harder with a full floater as it floats Tynes a staint colour best of times main tyne south tyne is clear in many parts...but if we fishing a sinking leader tippiet and weighted flee we get to feel whats happening add some river craft to this and we cant go wrong all yer need after that is too know day in day out year in year out lyes, the fish occupy the very same spots to the inch.so when a fish leaves a favoured lye something else replaces it......happens every day of the season year in year out learn the lyes and basic casting cant go wrong,i taught someone this season gave him 5 mins with my rod after he came out twice oprevious to watch hey i let him fish for a couple of hours withing 5 mins he is roll casting in a fasion after half hour a mate turns up said he a good caster !!!! lol he only been fshing a hour he had coarse fished of course......next outing he landed two salmon one first cast and a sea trout 5 lbs time after lost two salmon i blanked didnt have a touch........he landed some where near 15 salmon and a handfull of sea trout lost as many all in october i manged 5-6 fish all salmon.....so it shows yer it can be done......newcomers i mean....as for old timers well i was well shown up but glad to see some one else catching salmon...river Wear not Tyne though i fished the tyne since 1991
I always struggled with a single spey cast to consistently cast it at 80-90 degrees to the dangle and to make it consistently go out the same distance. I came up with something like a Perry Poke except I do it very slightly differently because I kept playing around until something worked! Lift and wave round as you would a single spey but then lay the line back a bit like a double spey and then when you pick up it will make a nice D with a great anchor which will let you cast full length every time. It looks a bit ugly but you can fish good sized rivers like the Namsen whilst in my case being a very amateur fisher. It also lets you bounce the line off the wind when it is upstream so the fly lands slightly downstream of the mainline.
thank you for the comment - its a fly fishing rod, not a pole. Watch more of our our videos and you will see that its a different action than using a pole
Excellent. You must have changed direction as much a 4 feet!
Well done Anne. Much love and a happy new year to you and all the Ladies Fishing gang. Let's hope 2016 is a good one too.
Where you fishing at
hiya anne ryan here make sure to subsribe to my channel and have a look at some of my fly fishing videos thanks
Thank you for all your feedback - wollyisbest234 everyone is entitled to an opinion - luckily we have free speech in our society - the biggest salmon caught in the UK was by a women - Georgina Ballantine On October 7, 1922, she had already caught salmon of 25lb, 22lb and 17lb when she hooked the record salmon at 6.15pm. Maybe you would like to google Miss Ballantine
Lovely casting Anne,I wish I could throw a line like that! The circle c is of particular interest as it would be a good cast for me to learn as opposed to the double Spey,as a matter of interest did you catch anything that day.hope you have had a good season thus far,I,ve had five on the main Tyne ,so I,m not too bad.cheers,John.
