Behind The Lines; Bass and Drums
Well... drums, bass, and backup vocals. One short section has lead vocals in there, too. Just listen, okay?
Originally, this was an accident, but you can expect to see more of these pop up on my channel.

The most umpredictable bass player.
❤🔥🔥🌟 LOOOVE this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you #getphilvotedin
One of the greatest prog basslines ever. Yes it's sloppy, yes notes are out of key all the time. But MIke makes it work, with a tone to die for. As much as I admire the late Chris Squire's pure precision and melodicism, I find Mike to be far more interesting for me as he plays some of the most unexpected lines for a song. Not a shot at Squire, he was perfect for Yes.
Not sloppy, out of key? I think you are listening to Syd Vicious dude. This is the greatest playing this song
Phil’s right foot coupled with Mike’s expert rhythm guitar. And away we go! What a rhythm section. Mike’s on Bass pedals + 12 string rickenbacker.
This music is hot😊😊😊😊😊
God, this really shows how criminally underrated Rutherford is as a bassist.
Phil’s kit was so huge at this time, I don’t think they had enough mics. The smaller toms are not very present in the mix during the start of the big opening drum fill!
Great bouncy, funky feel.
In the thumbnail photo, he looks like Jesus from an Italian Renaissance painting.
😃😃😃👌👌👍👍👍

MIKE!!!!!!!

Collin's drumming from 9:35 til the end - MASTERFUL! Bank's solo - total Wanking! Rutherford's Bass...competent, and rhythmically complimentary - but definitely not Chris Squire level!
What timing...!
Not bass live its rhythm guitar
Questi ragazzi erano poco più che ventenni erano dei fenomeni
He’s not the greatest lead player obviously but he plays a mean rhythm and Taurus and plays pretty interesting bass lines too. I imagine he gets terrible back pain after playing heavy double necks so long. Genesis really are the Beatles of Prog aren’t they?
Love the similes in describing this iteration, sounds fine to me lol
Wow! This is incredible! Most underrated member of Genesis.
Wow,,,the sound is incredible! and we hear the Mellotron a lot more......
Whoever thought Genesis would be better live with MR on guitar and DS on bass….one of those head scratcher decisions for sure!
Amazing to hear these basslines clearly…I could never quite tell what he was doing with the full mix. And he was very busy a lot of the time.
There’s so much going on here. The level of mastery is not displayed in the notes being played, but the ease that Phil expresses them.
Trying to sync this with the W&W track in Audacity, If you would share the formula of the recording spacing (pm?), that would be great!
It should be easy to sync up with the 2007 remix. You'll never get it to sync up with any of the earlier versions.
This track it turns out is much like "Robbery," much better without the terrible lyrics.
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing !
I’m here for the whole song of course but especially 7:25
I've always said that bass during Steve's solo makes the guitar sound faster than Steve is playing. Perfect interplay.
Powerful, as is Genesis
I've been a prog head for most of my life, and even though I eventually became a guitarist, I've always wanted to learn to play drums. I've heard many great prog drummers. I eventually was (I guess I still am) a big fan of Mike Portnoy for example. But I always had the idea that if I put in the time (which would be a godlike amount of time) I could play or write Portnoy stuff. But it never crossed my mind I would be able to play like Collins does, or did. Say what you want about the guy, but (t)his kind of drumming sounds so effortlessly, and is yet so incredibly technical. It really has feeling and "soul". I'm not gonna say Collins is the best drummer there ever was, I mean look at these new jazz acts, young people these days, they're insane (JD Beck for example), but Collins was a top tier drummer in his time, and I think it's the reason Genesis became a household name. A band is only as good as it's drummer. (before you say it, I will defend Ringo as well xD)
Paul, playing that Hofner, was kind of forced into that real note-y, no-sustain kind of playing. And he made it work for him. Mike just does it because he likes it.
The band REALLY screwed up leaving this off the album.
It’s funny… but I’m not surprised by this at all. I’m a melody guy, and a piano player…. But I must say I always notice Mikes awesome contributions in their music. Very frequently I’ll hear Mike do things and think, “dang… that just added so much to the beauty of this song.” I always look forward to those little Rutherford moments. I noticed this a lot on Duke.
In addition to this amazing drum playing, there's a hidden keyboard part starting at 7:43 - 8:05 that goes kind in harmony with the main line. And again at 9:10 - 9:36. Love it.
ikr! Now everytime I listen to this song I always sing this part too ahahaha
Amazing galloping bass groove
I wish We Stop talking about Who's the BEST AND BETTER THAN THE OTHER PERSON...TO ME...ALL OF THE GENESIS Musicians are Awesome!!🥰🥰🥰🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🥁🥁🥁🎧🎤🎸🎸
Pure mastepiece, I can listen 24/7
This is how the masters do!
There's a kind of Bill Wyman unpredictability to Mike's bass playing. This song is a good example of that trait.
This is heavy!
No wonder Neil loved Phil
This is Mike in his Chris Squire phase. It's amusing how, toward the end of the second "chorus" (as it were), he feels no particular need to play notes in the chord, or sometimes even in the key. Weird.
The last reprise of the lyrics at 6:42 it's a double bass (pedals and guitar bass) explosion of epic magnitude!
Yes. Thanks for pointing out out.
Man, there's nothing like the Taurus pedals.
It's a shame that so many of Genesis's studio albums are poorly mixed...otherwise we could hear more of Mike's bass parts in all their glory.
W&W is a particularly bad offender, which is too bad because there are a lot of great songs on that album.
@@kedro5 Yeah, on all the albums from W&W through Duke, it sounds like they plugged Tony's keyboards directly into the mixing desk and let him drown out everything else.
@@kedro5 Check this out kedro. Very decent remix by that dude zandola1. You can listen the bass all the way from the start. ruclips.net/video/SS_enXHABQ0/видео.html
At 2:00 in…. That distinct sound of the Ric! Very Chris Squire-ish
Got to laugh at all the "he's rushing it / sloppy" type comments. This is exactly the reason why this era of music sounds as wonderful as it does. It's no coincidence that music started to go seriously downhill once digital recording took over.
I agree, but he definitely hasn't mastered the instrument at this point, you can tell guitar is his main instrument. Still very soulful playing and an awesome record
Bass, "in the cage" melody part wow. Would love to hear this isolated.
Collins was an incredibly underrated drummer, IMO. Some of his early work, like this, was incredible.
I dispute that this was indeed early in his career.... otherwise, agreed.
@@jdmresearch 1978 was about 8 years into a 30 year career, so I’d say it was early
