JetExec Turbine Startup Procedure - Narrated
Просмотров 8247 месяцев назад
I've had a lot of people over the years ask for this, so frankly, I'm overdue! The startup procedure for turbines is always an intimidating one until you get used to it. Here I attempt to describe my process as I go through a startup. It happens fast, so you might need to watch it a few times! I then went out and practiced a bunch of autorotations and quick stops and then took a leisurely fligh...

Last year I took this flight over Killington on Memorial day, so I thought I'd recreate it this year, this time with Shannon! Unfortunately it looked like rain on Memorial Day itself, so we decided to do it a couple days early. It was in the 80's, but they were out skiing! 3:45 Departure West 6:10 Circling Killington 13:25 Returning East 15:15 Arrival at LEB
Mount Ascutney Flight on May the 4th

The nearby highest peak is Mount Ascutney at 3144 feet. Clouds were broken at roughly the same height, so we took a flight out to it and stayed just under the broken ceiling. Fun little 45 minute loop! Sorry for the slight "fisheye" distortion. I messed up the settings for my GoPro lens and "fixed" it in post.

Labor Day Flight to (almost) Canada! - JetExec Experimental Helicopter

The weather this past Labor Day was absolutely perfect. Surface winds topped at 3-4 mph all day. So as soon as the morning fog burned off, we set a course to visit our friend Paul, a fellow Rotorway owner! He's roughly 95 miles North, straight up the Connecticut River. All in, this was the furthest I've travelled by helicopter, covering a total of 240 miles, in 3.3 hours, burning 50 gallons alo...

What KISS kit # are you? #98 has a manual override in case of electrical failure. Don Hillberg designed the Jet Exec and Dave Domanski sold the conversion kit. Last I heard Dave retired and RotorX has X'ed Homer Bell and the Rotorway Group forum are all we have...
@HongyaMa there's also a pretty healthy group going on Facebook, and a lot of us communicate directly. I got my parts second hand, so didn't get a KISS kit number.
@@Aerohead 😁
What kit # you have? Kit #98 has a manual override on the governor in case of electrical failure. Relax and use your fingers to fly , That's always an issue with new pilots. Loosen up , Relax & have fun
Why do some RW pilots shy away from the Jetexec?
We're a much smaller number batch. Some don't want to do this much "experimental" and prefer the standard Rotorway, in which a TON more have been built, so they can have more of a "standard" helicopter. And like with any new platform with less than 100 in operation, there's going to be a bit more troubleshooting/design work associated with the JetExec and that makes people nervous. I totally understand it - JetExec's have run into a few bumps along the way and we've had to redesign some components, and for some people, that was too much.
Beautiful helicopter!
Thanks!
@Aerohead I had the opportunity to fly in a 162f last week in AZ, by the old rotorx factory. It was the piston model but amazing helicopter. Would you say the jetexec is anymore complicated than the standard 162f? Maintenance, flying?
@@Urbanracer No, not at all. I've flown both of course. The JetExec is naturally governed, so if you didn't have the governor on the piston model, that will certainly be a difference. Also, the governor in the JetExec is SOLID - you should expect to see RPM stable to with about a tenth of a percent - so that does make the whole thing feel more predictable than even the governed piston model which can sometimes have more oscillation. Other than that, flight characteristics are pretty much identical just with more available power. Maintenance wise - it depends on where you are in the build. I had more maintenance in the first 50 hours than you'd expect in a piston one, for exactly the reasons I mentioned above, we were finding things and addressing them, but beyond that, it's quite maintenance light. Grease/oil/inspections regularly of course, but other than that, pretty reliable.
Well, the view of the foliage isn't all that great.
@shreddder999 yeah, back then all I had was the cockpit camera... I've got a downward facing one now and the leaves are starting to turn again. We'll see if I can get a better one this year!

@@Aerohead You bet. Anytime you post my friend. It's a sweet bird.
This is called an autorotation.
Correct you are, sir!
Does it cushion the aircraft enough to make landing survivable?
@@alastairward2774 (For some reason, RUclips keeps deleting my comments... trying again) Yes, not only survivable, but with no damage to the helicopter. If executed properly, it's a non-issue. Not much harder than a normal landing. You may slide 5-10 feet or so if you didn't fully stop your forward speed.
@@Aeroheadi bet people probably tend to slide it a bit more in actual engine failures than practice because they’re focused on getting it to the ground in safety before they lose any energy in the rotor assembly at all. You lose more than just lift with reduced energy, and you’re not gonna get energy back when the engine’s dead unless you’re descending through the air.
@StealthTheUnknown the flare is the last burst of energy recovery too. You're tipping your rotor disk back to catch all the airspeed through the disk and convert to rotor rpm. I've seen other helicopters slide more, and I also attribute that to how much they are able to flare. I did a few full down autos in grass without the engine coming back and it didn't slide at all.
Hi Adam are still able to get replacement parts for the helicopter from rotor x
Not from Rotor X, no. They are out of business. But honestly, I never felt like I needed any parts from them. There's a huge community of people helping each other out, making parts, etc. and none of the JetExec specific parts ever had anything to do with RotorX anyway. Elastomeric bearings and such are really the only big "consumable" that people need, and already several sources have popped up to supply us, same as the original ones that were supplied to RotorX.
@@Aerohead thanks that makes me feel lot better about moving forward with the purchase.
EXCELLENT !!!!
How are you doing a year out from this video? What are your thoughts on using the jetexec for a 60mile (one way) daily commute with good weather. What kinda operating costs are you seeing for 100hr/yr? Thanks adam
It's good! It's been a year and a half now since this one, and last summer I officially got my check ride and license in June. Flew about 35 hours last summer, and I think 20 or so so far this summer. No mechanical issues to deal with during that time, and I've just been flying and carrying passengers. I definitely only fly in good weather though - I don't risk high winds or rain or anything, so if I was relying on it for commuting, I'd be a little nervous. 120 mile round trip should be fine for a single tank with plenty of reserve, so no problems there. Operating costs on these are basically oil and fuel and hangar rental. Almost everything is on-condition and you might need to swap elastomeric bearings every couple hundred hours, but they aren't spendy. I'd say your 120 mile trip would cost about $100-150 all in.
@@Aeroheadit sucks rotorway/rotorx doesn't make helicopters anymore. I just found this out 😮
@@Urbanracer In the same boat. Love these, is a few good ones for sale but this point in time leaning more towards the new arrival to the US the Argentina version. Great support, believe 60 yrs in business, gear box swaps after a set amount of hours for rebuild cut and dry direct from the factory to prevent serious downtime. Personally am looking at after obtaining certs to use for short hops with a larger bell or MD500 parked elsewhere. Tis the plan anyways. Best to you and your goals. Great video, Adam. Wish I could have heard the conversation. What are the names of the avionics you are using, display, radio etc?
I have a Stratomaster Odysset EFIS, but I don't think they make those anymore, they have a smaller Enigma version that I think is the most current. The rest of my gauges are MGL or MicroAir
Thx@@Aerohead
That's good to know. I like this JetExec chopper's spec except for the hour range, but keep hearing how difficult it is to get parts for the T62-32 engines built back in the 60's. I heard there were up grades in 2014, so if I got a JetExec kit, put out in 2009, it looks impossible to get whatever upgrades were made after that date.
It should have over 2 hr range - it burns 15 gph with passenger and has a 40 gallon tank. There have been upgrades, and in fact I've been working on doing those upgrades for several others the last couple years. They are definitely easy to get, we just make them to order. Again, none of this ever went through the factory anyway, so nothing changed there when it closed.
Sounds like the JetExec community is solid on sharing info and keeping everyone flying. I'm trying to get a handle on a fair price for a 2009 jetExec kit. It's suppose to be 30% complete, but after building several experimental fixed wings, I've found that most inexperienced builders underestimate the amount of time it takes to build certain airplane kits. But it sounds like this chopper kit doesn't require a lot of time since it's mostly a bolt together. His -32 is suppose to be a fresh zero time rebuild. No avionics. I didn't see any doors in the pictures. Kit has been in a hanger. Not sure how long jet engines can sit without needing replacement bearings etc. Asking 86, but will negotiate. I have many questions on this kit. Since it's winter now, my first question is, do these have an option for a cabin heat from bleed air? @@Aerohead
@@ginginthing All good questions, and I have helped some people in purchasing or upgrading their ships in the past, so I'm happy to have a conversation if you want. Feel free to send me an email, AeroheadG8, at Gmail. For the heater, I think the most common is to use a Webasto or Espar or similar and just run it off a gallon of diesel - they run forever on that, and are thermostatically controlled and everything, so it works well. I haven't installed one yet, but I've been eyeing it for a while, might do it this year.
Thx Aerohead for the reply. The next big hurtle is apparently, a helicopter endorsement. I have had a private license for over 50 years. Since I was an A&P mechanic maintaining a flight school, I got my license for the price of fuel, which was at $1.50/gal at the time or around 500 total. That's almost what these schools are asking for per hour of dual training in a chopper. With my current third class fixed wing, I would only need 30 hours but still, they should be able to retire off of one pilots student training. Are there any CFI's that train in these JetExecs or Rotorway recips, or use simulators to help cut down on costs? This kind of takes the fun out of flying your own experimental chopper, and may be a show stopper for me at almost 10k for a privates on a chopper. @@Aerohead
@@ginginthing Yep, there sure are. I trained in my own helicopter, with a CFI in the right seat. They charge much less per hour than you'd expect a flight school to charge to use their helicopter. I can definitely connect you with some of them. @josephpriolo1514 is one of them.
Is there any factory help and parts for these with the new factory owners, RotorX? I'm interested in buying a used ship, but am hesitating on getting one because I can't even get RotorX to respond to any emails or phone call messages I've been leaving over the last two weeks or so. Might go back looking for a Mosquito.
Yeah, unfortunately RotorX is currently out of business. The JetExec was never directly supported by them anyway, just the parts it shares with the piston version. There's talk of them changing ownership and coming back online but nothing concrete yet.
Sorry to hear that. Thx so much for the info.@@Aerohead
@@ginginthing Of course. That being said, I was never worried for a minute when the factory closed, because it was never a part of my build or maintenance. In our experimental world, we all help each other and we're in charge of making sure it's safe to fly. There's enough of an active community to keep us all flying anyway.
It looks great. Goog job. Thank You for sharing . Chris
It looks like you have had your Jetexec for a few years. It appears you like it. How has the maintenance and performance been?
I definitely love it! This last year was very maintenance light, as the craft now feels pretty much finished. A few things remain I'd like to do, but doing less wrench turning and more focusing on the flying.
I'll take the Rotorway helo ANY freakin day❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥😃👍🏻
Thanks for the ride too. God bless
Did you have time in a piston RW or did you go straight into the jetexec?
Straight to the JetExec. I did also do about a dozen hours in the piston during my training though. But I started on the turbine.
I watched a few of your videos, i was looking to purchase a piston rotorway/X to avoid costly turbone repairs/maintenance. I really want a turbine though. What fuel consumption are you getting with your jet exec? What size tank is that and have you recorded or noticed your top and cruise speeds yet? Thanks in advance.
Hello! Thanks for watching! My fuel burn is around 13 gph solo and 15 gph with a passenger. It has a 40 gallon tank. The VNE is 115 mph, and a comfortable cruise speed is 90-100. Any repairs you'd need to do on the turbine really aren't costly. The whole turbine unit only costs around $10k, but it's very hardy, so shouldn't need repairs within the life of the helicopter. Other parts are generally more of the concern.
Let me know if you're looking to get one! I know the community pretty well.
The picture in picture was pretty Neat !

Great video Adam....hope to see you in the spring around Florida area!!
apart from the blades, people dont realize how important it is to support the tail boom during transport. jarring road vibrations can create fatigue not associated with flying conditions. im glad you adopted this method, i do the same with my vintage execs. nice presentation.

Thanks! With a passenger, right around 15 gph.
Awesome...thanks again. Just a small lotto and I'd be in the air with ya. lol@@Aerohead

how much is Avgas per gallon ?thx
Are you just taking it easy or is that your max cruise speed?
Yeah, just a comfortable doors-off cruise speed. VNE on this is expected to be around 115, and a few times throughout the flight I was over 100 IAS, but it gets a bit bumpier, so I don't stay up there too often.
This is gold🎉
