I've watched mantids mate while taking close-up pictures of them. The tip of the male's abdominal segment actually unfolds inside the female's ovipositor, or egg laying organ, and he fertilizes the eggs internally. The actual adeagus, or insect penis, isn't very large but it fastens to her/is held in place so securely that the insects can't be separated without damage. She can pull the male to her mouth by bending her abdominal segment more and more, until eventually she eats all that's left of him out of her... p*ssy. However, males are only cannibalised in about 13-30 percent of all observed mantis matings. One male may mate several times before meeting his doom in the arms of his lady for the night, and of course female mantids will accept sex right up until the point that their abdomens are so engorged with growing eggs that the male's sperm capsule sticks out of her body like an odd appendage, and she remarkably pulls her abdomen close and eats the sperm capsule, thus re-opening the path for egg laying.
