How to Broach - Sailing Lesson #2

Normally, I film this sort of stuff from my camera on a kite. Too bad most of this footage is from underwater in the cockpit.
How Not to Gybe - Sailing Lesson #1

Things got a little out of hand as I was trying to sort out sailing down wind with my camera on a kite. This is probably the first video, filmed by the skipper, of an uncontrolled gybe while sailing single handed.

NOAA forecast was for 5-10kts. Small Craft Advisory conditions came up very fast which provided ideal flat water conditions for GPS and knot meter calibration.

Marrowstone Point (Admiralty Inlet, WA) can produce some interesting seas. This mild day would have been more fun in a kayak.

good music, too!
Why is in the water causing the wake to last so long? Is that from Geo-engineering? Yuck! Thumbs up for the video of the classy little sailboat and the ingenious way to get the overhead shots.
Thank you.

Hmm
What am I missing here !
That rudder and jib boom look just like the ones on my old Bullseye that I foolishly traded for electrical work done on a larger boat back in 1985 or so in Mathews, Va. I purchased from a dealership of older type wind surfers in Va. Beach a curved boom and cut it in two. One part became the rudder (with a stainless piece into which I would attach a tiller extension, which let me sit way up on the side far away from the rudder and still control it). The other became the jib boom. The after end of the jib boom had a block through which the single line jib sheet went and the forward end had a slit into which the forestay fit. This part did split one time, but I glued it back together and reinforced it with nylon twine, afterward varnishing the whole thing. The used boat I had bought had had neither rudder nor jib boom. I later saw the ones that came with new Bullseyes (puny little things, they) and I decided that I preferred the ones I had fashioned. Although my Bullseye didn't come with a tiller or a jib boom, it did have a boom crutch; but had I kept my MONHEGAN (powerful sounding word, that -- powerful like the Bullseye sailboat -- not feminine sounding, like LIA though) , I would have fashioned a different one in place of it. The boom crutch that came with MONHEGAN was a beautiful flat piece of mahogany that one would stick into a hole in the after deck. As the main was lowered, the boom would nestle into a cup shaped area at the top. Midway down the crutch was a hole into which the tiller fit, securing it. This was fine if the boat were not in motion and there was no need to steer it. Not so good if you had to use the rudder to direct the boat.My design would have been flat two pieces of wood loosely bolted together scissor- like, forming an X when opened up. When not opened up, they would be like two single boards lying atop each other and joined together with a bolt/nut combination closer to one end. Thus they could be stowed beneath the seat cushions or below the seats on the cockpit sole. The pieces at the top of the seemingly lopped off X would form the receiving end of the crutch where the maim boom would lie when the main is lowered. The bottom legs of the open X would fit at the junction of the deck and the after ends of the combing. With such a boom crutch one could still steer the boat with the mainsail lowered and the boom in the crutch. Instances of this need could be as follows: you're sailing in under jib alone; you've dropped both sails and are using the enormous way-on created by the craft's 750lbs keel to propel you into a slip or up to a dock; or, finally, in those very rare times when you might strangely enough feel the urge or need to use some OTHER MEANS to propel this fine craft than that for which it was solely designed, namely WIND.
mexican band zoe - nada? wtf... that's so weird
Could you make it a bit shakier please
Pretty lousy 'how to', and why would you want to broach a boat on purpose anyway? Best avoided.
You call this a lesson?
Love these videos. I am refurbishing and 58 Bullseye and would love to know the hardware he used in the back of the boats for the jib sheets. It is just too hard to eyeball them but it looks like a great system!... jcork@optonline.net
Did you ever get her restored? I had a Bullseye of that vintage and sailed her out of NYCC on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. Most sailing fun I ever had. Kept up with the larger sailboats heading out on Saturday mornings (many under power). Returning on a run on fine spring day, we stayed 100 feet ahead of a J-24 being tuned up for the racing season. After we came around the final channel marker and hardened up onto a reach, he slipped past us. " What kind of boat is that?"
.. asked the J-24 skipper, with a somewhat astonished tone. "A Bullseye, a fiberglass version of a Herreschoff 12&1/2" was my reply. "Oh, that explains it", he replied. Sadly, I traded my MONEGAN for some electrical work on a Coronado 25 I was fixing up. Regretted it ever since. I hope you completed your restoration and had/(are having) as much fun as I had.
What a great catboat!... I've always wanted one, but never did.....my loss!..
Very nice images! :-)
Thanks.
beautiful
lol great floor shot
awful song.
Yall need to wipe the lense every now an then-- Beautyful footage though!!
So many videos have been ruined by this song, when will it end?
Let the fingers hit the MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!!!!
the music TAKES AWAY from a decent video about sailing and a jibe.. fail
Berenstain Bears. What not to do. LOL. Maybe a little too reactive on the tiller. Just speaking from my own experience.
Thanks. She's hull #21, first commissioned in 1982. Jerry
What year was your T42? We have a 1982 model - great sail! John
Of course, this song.
Yes, #918.
More or less. The aft sections are based on the Bobcat, scaled up to 14 feet. I changed the bow to have a proper tumble home profile. This changed the forward hull sections. I also added the cabin and changed the rig.
Is that a stretched Bolger Bobcat coming to starboard???
Lovely video. You must have a very stable rig, how did you do it? What kind of kite and suspension system did you use?
I love Moss Landing. I sliped my boat there for 5 years but management became to restrictive and too costly for little service in return. I love the area. Its a working harbour with lots of fishing boats to get the catch of the day and do alittle grilling. No longer there. Liked the video thanks
Huh?
almost looked like you slipped, you dont broach in a dinghy, you capsize
nice camera work !!
Nice job!!!!!
No, AC. That's the San Mateo Bridge in the southern part of San Francisco Bay. I've been to the second Severen Crossing, but never by sailboat! Cheers, Jerry - Lia #918
Is that the second Severn Crossing in the background, North easterly with the tide flooding? Cheers AC Wayfarer3731 Shire Bristol
Well Capt, from the looks of your "Bella Motoring" video, I'd say you have things pretty well sorted out. Next time, however, don't let all that great wind go to waste! Hah!
Very nice KAV video
very stable shots and bullseye is wonderful boat :)
Nice moves!.....good shooting!...jajaja
Great video!
cool! I love catboat especially Cape Cod Cat :)
Thanks. Don't know if Nat had SF Bay in mind when he designed Lia, but I'm sure Buzzards Bay can be just as exciting.
That's what we call a swift answer ! thank you !
Lia's a Bull's Eye, based on the Herreshoff 12 1/2 design from almost 100 years ago. She's built by Cape Cod Ship Builders in Wareham, MA.
Great video :) I really like the white dinghy, what is it ?
Beautiful yacht, Nice kite cam work. great fun kite cam flying isnt it.
Sail is dancin on the water, you follow her lead, and you spin her around
Next trip.....
