To answer that first question. Obsidian, Plastic or wood along with various other materials like a shard of glass would evade the metal detectors and if you know the model of metal detector you can use non ferrous metals in small quantities with some level of insulation such as a Cavity in the body to conceal the scalpel and retrieve it.
