got any tips for getting those cars to run smoothly? just got some off of ebay and they rrealy tax my poor turbine engine.
This is one of my favorite sets. Are the engine wheels spinning/slipping? A turbine should have no problem pulling 3 passenger cars. One drop of light machine oil on each side of each wheel should be all that is required for lubrication of the cars if you have not done so already. I also use a dremmel rotary tool with a wire brush to clean dirty wheels (whear safety glasses). If the engine still struggles to pull the 3 cars, it might also be time to service the engine.
This was my first Lionel train set, a hand-me-down from an older brother. My set came with the 3559 coal dump car.
Very cool!
Beautiful train. Lionel made the 211 from 1962-66. Only the 1962-64 had Magnatraction. I have a Lionel 210 AA made in 1958 only with 2 axel Magnatraction and 3 position E-unit.
@@chiconian49 Thanks! The 211 runs pretty good, just not as nice as having a 3 position e-unit & magnatraction like the 210.
Gorgeous locomotive, but I wonder if the tender is correct. The locomotive appears to be a model of Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson. Tender doesn't match locomotive colors and is marked New York Central.
Beautiful!
What a beautiful set! What to you use to make the cars shine?
What a stunning locomotive. I too have a Marx 3000 with a chrome cab, crossheads, chrome boiler front & cow catcher with a double reduction motor. Does the one you are showing have a double reduction motor. Many locos which pulled auto coupler equipped sets with 4-wheel truck cars did due to the extra weight of the rolling stock.
@@chiconian49 The owner believed it was chromed only in 1939. I would have to ask him about the double reduction motor.
Is this standard gauge?
@imlovingtrains These are Lionel O-gauge. The train on the inside loop is a Torpedo set from 1937. The other two are Lionels' first attempt at scale realism and require an O-72 radius track to negotiate the curves. The M-10,000 was introduced in 1934 and was made through 1941. Standard Gauge was pretty much last produced in 1938 and cataloged again in 1939 to help stores sell off remaining stock.
@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 thx for the info i just couldn't tell if it was standard gauge or not
Was that steam locomotive a 2-4-4-4?
Impressive
Do you thing they're painted with lead paint ?
@@jayvaghela7747 There is a high probability that Lionel used Lead based paint in the prewar years. They were also using enamel paints.
Fantastic
Very cool
Awesome! Standard gauge is so cool! 😀
@@TrainBandit It sure is!
The Postwar and modern standard gauge guys came up with some really interesting stuff.
@@advancedapproachproduction2394 Yes indeed!
I have never seen a Standard Gauge engine like that ! Beautiful loco and consist
Al, as always a great informative video. Pleas keep them coming.
@stevencilento3364 Thanks! Will do.
Great comparison video Al. I really enjoyed this one. I have the 1938 version. I’m just missing the chimney. Thank you!
@TwistedMacGyversTrains Glad you enjoyed the video! Definitely a learning experience for me.
good job!
@@ken0272 Thanks!
Thanks, Al. Always great to get some of the history on the Lionel items. It is interesting to see the when they first appeared in the catalog and what Lionel produced. Most of the early catalog listings were most likely before the product was acutally produced.
That happened many times to Lionel, and it is always interesting to see how the final product compares to the artist's 1st rendition in the catalog.
Marx guy here, I have my Dad`s third generation Gateman. What year did Lionel stop manufacturing him? Great Show.
@plunkervillerr1529 I think Lionel continued making the gateman in various forms all through the modern period. The 45 gateman continued into the postwar period through 1949. Lionel came out with the 145 gateman in 1950 or 51, and I believe that continued through 1966.
They still make some version to this day, I believe.
My favorite part is the hole in the base for the light . easy and impressive !
@@raysrails2164 Simple and easy to replace the bulb.
thanks , great info
@@PopPopsTrainRoom A fun learning experience for me.
One of my favorite trains, runs like it just left the factory....nice!
@@DiamondsandRustTrains The small Hudson is a good runner.

@@PopPopsTrainRoom Me too!
Al, another fantastic video. What a gorgeous dump car it is in excellent shape.
@stevencilento3364 Thanks! It's funny how the car can be in near perfect condition, and yet the wire insulation is falling apart. It was a fun little project.
The music is too loud, it's hard to hear you talking. Otherwise nice video.
It looks really good, Al!
@@johnfroio4910 Thanks! It was too nice not to add it to the collection.
The epitome of classic Lionel!!
Agreed!
Beautiful sounds
Awesome
Very nice!
Majestic
That car looks like brand new, except for the wiring. Very nice do it yourself video. 😊
@ronalddevine9587 Thank you! I have done a few of the prewar operating cars now and find many of these have the same issue with the brittle insulation.
@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 Everything from prewar and immediate postwar. I've rewired several AC Gilbert transformers. Oddly, in most cases the internal wiring is fine. I also refurbish vintage sewing machines. Almost all of them, American and British made Singer, brittle wiring and some, but not all postwar Japanese machines, brittle wiring. I know age is taking its toll on my 77 year old body as well!
This is the best 3800 series side dump car that I've ever seen !!!!!
One of the best I have seen as well, except for the wiring. But that is much better now.
Al, hope you are well. As usual, extremely nice nickel journaled 3800 series operating car.
All is good. Thank you for the feedback, as always. I think this is a 38 version and not 39 because of the nickel journals and the type of automatic couplers. I'll have to dig into it a little more.
@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 I would have to agree this is 38 piece based on the nickel journals. At least I've always associated 38 and extremely early 39 with them.
@@goldenmanuever1176 Once you mentioned nickel journals, the light bulb came on.
Got a postwar milk car that's going to need the same treatment done to it. Need to watch the videos a few more times and get the wire beforehand.
@@SOU6900 The wire is 22 ga and should be an ultraflex or superflex type stranded wire. Good luck with your project.
Nice freight car model
@@lucasquintanilla1673 Thanks!
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
If nothing else I wish they had done that locomotive and tender as a postwar piece as well.
@SOU6900 That would be the 703 Hudson that Lionel catologed in 1946 but never produced. I'm not sure if Lionel had made a mock-up for the artist to sketch, but it is nice to dream about the what-if scenario.
@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 Would it have been gunmetal grey like this one by any chance you know of?
@SOU6900 It was shown in the 1946 catalog as black with a black coal pile 2703W tender. Set# 2116WS was going to be a 4 car Madison passenger set. Set# 2117WS was going to be a freight train using the prewar scale cars with postwar trucks. But unfortunately these sets were never made. Only the Madison cars from the two proposed sets were carried over.
Great Condition 👍
@@robertcriss3957 Thanks! These are hard to find with the stripes intact.
Great set. Imagine the kid in the 1950s getting that as a gift.
@@paulbervid1610 I can imagine any kid during the 50s would be thrilled to receive one.
Looks great; nice camera angles enhance the look of the set rolling along!!
@@johnfroio4910 Thanks! It makes a nice perspective of the set. I probably need to slow the train down a bit more as the closeup shots make it appear to be moving faster than it actually is.
Very nice
@@paulbervid1610 Thanks!
Nice set. Too bad you can't buy them for $16.75 anymore.
@@johnleclaire6846 I wish!
It’s amazing that prewar sets still exist in this condition. All of mine are well played with lol.
I was very pleased with acquiring this set because of the condition. Hope you enjoyed the short video.
This is amazing so nostalgic
Thanks! Just how I like my vintage trains. There really is a certain charm I get from these old tin plate trains.
I'm afraid to ask what that set cost you since it still looks factory fresh.
Less than you might think! A collector friend made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
@alsvintagetoytrains7042 Did it still have the original boxes too?
@SOU6900 Yes, all boxes, set box, instructions, and paperwork.
Here is the full video and description: ruclips.net/video/NtF0-iAM8iE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Looking like brand new, very shiny.
One of my new favorites!
Understandably
Gorgeous set, I love those old Lionel and Marx Commodore Vanderbilts.
This one is my first.
One of the coolest trainmaster transformers Lionel ever made was the type Z 250 watt, which was last made in 1947, so at best, the transformer would be 77 years old.
Yes indeed. I have one on each layout. One to operate accessories on the postwar layout, and one to operate the two small standard gauge loops and accessories on my prewar layout.
