Not many entertainers wanted to come to Belfast, couldn’t really blame them. However Joe Dolan and The Drifters came up regularly and they had faithful fans from both sides of the divide. His shows were brilliant and just for a few hours helped us to forget the daily horrors and atrocities. Rest in Peace Joe. ❤

I am not happy with the way the park was taken over , Col Pakenham gave the park to the people of Crumlin, never to be sold and belong to the village. I did see the documents but somehow, they were lent to someone , and they disappeared, and the council now owns it, the arch way memorial now moved , the way the council acquired it is very under hand and very very😅 shady

I rode on that train when I was a kid. Used to go to Ballygowan a bit. Also to Newcastle a couple of times. A disgrace that the UTA shut it down in such haste. I also went to Newcastle on the GNR route near the end. Cheers from Australia.

Fascinating. Shame all that railway infrastructure was taken away. Belfast to Comber route looks as if it would suitable to run something like the Dublin LUAS. Just needs straightened a bit at some parts. Would certainly help with all the traffic congestion coming into bottle necks on King's Road and Upper Newtownards Roads, especially with all the new developments in Comber.

Very good. My mother worked as a cleaner for them in the early '70s. They were very generous and gave her a beautiful fur coat as a gift. Kind Jews. May they find peace in this hard world.

Born in 62 and the street running across the top Hardcastle st was Ashbourne st where I lived. can actually see the house no 23. Such fond childhood memories of Donegall Pass like most areas back then had a wonderful community spirit.

Thank you for sharing this. My great grandfather was Samuel McReynolds. I'm told he was the chief electrical engineer onboard. I've been trying to find information or photos about him on Ancestry for a couple of years now since i found out about the diaster and just happened to find this video. Seafaring must run in the family because I'm an electrical engineer in the maritime industry as well. I also never knew where were he was buried so thank you for letting me know, I'll make the effort to visit his grave and pay my respects.

I attended a funeral in Carnmoney jewish cemetery recently. First I've been there since the 60's.

The company also had a mill in Muckamore, Co. Antrim. Some of my family worked in the mill.

I left Belfast in 1965, aged 23 for Australia. I never ever got back to see it again but I have the memories of my young life there.

Such a shame to have lost this railway, hard to believe that in the 1950s the train took 15 mins from comber to queens quay, now the bus schedule time is 55 minutes in rush hour, that's progress!

Thank you for a very interesting video, especially the Barbour Street part. My Grandparents (Francis & Mary McCormick) lived on the street during the attack , moving to Dandy Street afterwards and then returning back once the house was sorted out .... In your video you were unsure of its location, it was just passed the fireplace shop and on the same side the new motorway bridge is built on top of the road.

My dad was born in the 125 Hyndford Street house 1930 ! John Ivan Hoey first child Robert and Mary Hoey. He was Always amused Van Morrison also lived there!

Interesting. My great grandparents were Muckles from Ballyhay. I found my way to this video trying to find out whether my grandmother Martha Muckle (1888 - 1966) went to school at Ballyvester Primary School. I am also trying to find the location of the ancestral Muckle farm, probably somewhere on Ballyhay Road, Donaghadee. The first grave in the video , Dr Joseph Martin, may the father of my uncle Joe who married my aunt Sadie (Sarah Muckle from Ballyhay) . If any Sloans from Donaghadee read this, I found the grave of James Finley Sloan (Finley misspelt as Finlay) in Ruatoria cemetery in New Zealand. I purchased his war file but don't have a photo. James was wounded a number of times at Gallipoli but drowned in NZ a few years after WWI and is buried in Ruatoria Cemetery in the north east of New Zealand. The 1911 census says James' father was a Flesher (butcher) in Donaghadee.

Thankyou History Hub Ulster. Charles Lanyon is the architect responsible for most of the buildings in the first half and the Catholic PIRA was responsible for most of the remainder. The emptiness of the commercial centre and surrounding streets is largley due to the Protestant UVF and UDA gangs roaming the city shooting and butchering Catholic civilians - described by the police as 'motiveless murders'.
