In this video, we specifically cover how to calculate the fire resistance rating of a single wythe CMU assembly using the 2018 International Building Code, specifically Section 703 Fire Resistance Ratings
Masonry Minute: Should truss or ladder-type joint reinforcement be used in CMU construction?
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.4 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ The two most common types of horizontal joint reinforcement are truss-type and ladder-type. When should each be specified? Listen to this Masonry Minute to see when each is appropriate.
Lintel Design: Principles of Flexure (1 of 4)
Просмотров 5094 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ This four part lintel design series focuses on the strength design (SD) provisions contained in Chapter 9 of the TMS 402-16 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures. The first part of our series focuses on principles of flexural design by comparing flexural analysis of reinforced concrete members based on ACI 318-14 to the provisions contained in TMS 402-16. Topics...
Masonry Minute: Are you over-designing your CMU lintels?
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ Did you know that masonry laid in running bond has an innate ability to span around openings? The masonry industry typically refers to this as "arching action", and taking advantage of arching action can allow for much more economical lintel sizes. Instead of designing a lintel for the total superimposed load from floors, roofs, and wall self weight; using arching action al...
Masonry Minute - Are you correctly specifying grout compressive strength on your project?
Просмотров 1574 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ The compressive strength of grout has both maximum and minimum values in the TMS 402/602 document as well as in ASTM C476. Make sure you are correctly specifying grout compressive strength in your project plans or specifications.
Masonry Minute: Can you use concrete cylinder molds for grout compressive strength specimens?
Просмотров 3974 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ Although commonly used on masonry job sites, this video addresses the use of plastic concrete cylinder molds used for compressive strength testing of grout. ASTM C1019 and NCMA Technical Note 18-08B are referenced to show testing recommendations for grout.
Masonry Minute: Are you correctly specifying masonry compressive strength?
Просмотров 3744 года назад
www.masonryinfo.org/ Masonry compressive strength (f'm) is used in almost every equation in the TMS 402/602 standard. It effects nearly everything; ranging from development length of reinforcement to reinforcement size and spacing. The TMS 602 includes the "Unit Strength Method" which includes a table relating mortar type and compressive strength of concrete masonry units to the compressive str...

Is there any reference to design unreinforcement masonry walls?
Thank you!.,
Could we construct BCJ for wall from one side with column/stiffener column, and fix the other side by angles, bonding agent and mortar with the other column??
The grout you mentioned are to be used in masonry units however now a days these have been developed further like mircroete grout that are used for connecting precast reinforced concrete sandwich walls. For those application i think we can still rely on cubes or cylinders
Does Arching action also occur in tilt up concrete walls?
Thank you for the great info,if you dont mind me asking,If the plans indicate 5 feet max grouting, can you keep laying the courses right after grouting or do you have to wait a certain time for the grout to cure? Also do you leave a grout key on a bond beam? Thank you.
The current TMS 602 (Specification for Masonry Structures) has grout pour heights includes in Section 3.5C. Designers and contractors typically limit grout pour heights to 5'-4" which is considered low lift grouting, and you would be permitted to continue laying courses after grouting. NCMA has more information on grouting available here: ncma.org/resource/grouting-concrete-masonry-walls/. Grout keys are covered in Section 3.5F where it states to form grout keys between grout lifts when the first lift is permitted to set prior to placement of the subsequent lift. The specification does state not to form grout keys within beams.
