BUDOKAS Dedicated to cultivating a community of martial art and spirit
Dear Sirs, Very good idea to start froom the meaning. WIth all respect, hjow about starting from the oerigin, as the Kendo. Any civilization was willing to use weapons, cold or even fire-based ones, and bare hand fighting came into play only after having lost the advantages of the two mention erlier. All the best, and best regards. Paul,69, retired practitioner of Karate
Who is this guy when did he train with sensei tabata
He's the head guy at HDKI. Good organization. Very open. We train with all kinds of people these days, Jimmy. Beverly is an ISKF dojo and there were several different orgs and dojos training.
Muithai class would already have lot's of combos done instead of talking about Japanese language and real clinch vs lost karate grappling techniques...
A normal karate class would spend more time drilling as well. This is from a seminar. Seminars tend to go deeper into details. That takedown was fairly standard too, not lost at all.
Isao Obata founded Chidokan Karate with Sasaki
❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is a GREAT find. So rare and now we see what the old karate looked like pre-JKA transformation. Reminds me of what Tsutomu Oshima Sensei does.

Why Sanchin in Shotokan?
Great film. Very nostalgic for me as I trained at Keio Dai!
Morote Uke in Zenkutsu Dachi... Age statt Mawashi Empi... Morote Empi... Es wäre sicher interessant zu erfahren wie es zu dieser Variante gekommen ist. Arrigatou
Legendary!
I miss sensei tabata
I was in the Tufts Karate Club in 1967 - 69 led by Mr tabata, Mr muoroka and Mr kowabura. , Mr kowabura didn’t know what to do with me, the only girl .
Hello! How great to hear from you! Are you aware there's still a Tufts club? We would love to hear any stories you may have. We have a lot of old photos on our Facebook page at facebook.com/NACKCUSA/photos_albums and we would love help in possibly identifying some of the people in the photos. Please feel free to get in touch with me at chip @nakf.net
Does anyone have more information about the teacher Tetsuro Noguchi? Do you know what school he comes from?
Hi, not sure what you mean. He was Keio class of 1940, so in his 50's in the video and probably over 100 now if he's still with us. So Keio, but not sure about what he did subsequently. Maybe someone else knows something.
@@nackc Thanks for your reply. Could you tell me what style of karate was practiced in the Keio class? Or where was the Keio class? I want to investigate about this kata, that's why the interest. Thanks and regards.
@ This is Shotokan Karate. Isao Obata was its first captain. There is still a very strong alumni organization at Keio University. I would suggest searching there. There are probably people you could reach out to.
I’m billy bates’ son michael. Tony C., Anthony A., my father. All the best
I was a member of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Karate Club under NAKF while at University several years ago and the Late Shotokan Karate Grandmaster Sensei Kazumi Tabata would come and conduct trainings and gradings from time to time. I had a great time and learnt a lot it was also a great stress reliever. Some of the exercises I learnt then I still use to this day. It is sad that Sensei Tabata is no longer with us.
There are more throws, arm locks, etc in these katas.
Crazy how I used to do all these exercises my sensei would teach us as a kid during my days of shotokan
❤❤❤
Congratulations to everyone

If you do not know who took this video I believe it was me. I have the original at my house. I made a copy for Sensei Tabata and Jim Ambrose. My name is Joe Hizny and I trained with Jim Ambrose. I was actually in the process of getting this on RUclips but I’m glad you beat me to it. I am assuming you found this among Sensei Tabata’s possessions. If someone else did video this, my apologies. I was unaware someone else did also. Sensei Tabata did ask me to video it. My very best to all I had the pleasure to train with and compete against in my trips to Boston.
Hi Joe! Thank you for the comment. Sorry, it had been held for review for some reason and we just saw it. It was indeed with Sensei Tabata's possessions. Thanks for taking credit for it, and thanks for making it!

We are Mita-karatekai , members graduated from KEIO KARATE CLUB. Thank you for uploading these rare videos. This video was produced at 50th Anniversary of KEIO KARATE CLUB. Many masters apear on these videos. Would you mind if we upload these videos in our channel?
By all means! The description of this video (and the other) has some wording we would appreciate having you include in the description of your own and any derivative video. We are trying to keep a handle on people grabbing it without credit (we were lucky to find it, encode it, and spend time subtitling and time-stamping it). If anyone should repost it, you should, and we would love any information you would like to share about it. We understand there may be a gentleman or two in these videos who are still involved in your club!
@@nackc Thank you for replying! All of them who apear in these videos are the members of our almini association, "mita-karatekai(三田空手会)”. So am I. We know well each other. it's very luck to find them and would like to introduce. I wonder how you get these videos that we don't keep already.
@@mitakaratekai Our founder, Kazumi Tabata, studied with Master Isao Obata. Master Tabata studied at Waseda and came to the United States at the request of Master Obata. When Sensei Tabata died in 2020, this film was found in his personal effects. We digitized it, took a look and realized how interesting and important it was so we translated it, added subtitles, and uploaded it here. It must have been a gift from someone, perhaps Master Obata himself. Very glad it got preserved this way for you guys, too!
I under stood all. Waseda and Keio are both Shotokan Karate and been very good rivals since established. We held the annual match event. I don’t know Tabata-sensei, but hear our old members about him. Someone knows him probably! Thank you for much information.

If only real attackers would attack with Oizuki ! To bad for us , they don't. So all of these fancy defense techniques would fail.
is there no footage of the heians from that time?
Not that we have, no. Sorry.
@@nackc it's okay, hope I can find it one day
Fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting these videos. Some really interesting variations that will give me much to think about.
Thanks for posting this, it was very interesting (although sometimes painful) to watch. Some odd little quirks in the Shotokan kata, but the general level of performance was so bad (and in this case, I mean "inconsistent") that I'm wondering whether these oddities were glimpses into the way that Funakoshi would have done the kata, or just mistakes! The Unsu in particular was *very* odd. Also, the level of the Naha te kata and the kobujutsu was a bit of a givaway that these were probably little more than curios that sat outside the main syllabus. The way the guy handled the sai made me think he didn't practice with them very often, and the Sanchin looked like just going through the motions.
His kata is amazing and he uses koshi y all movements very different to kata of competition..
To the people who said shotokan is only competition maybe needs to see this!
fantastic. learned a lot
Love it! Well done! Here's ours: ruclips.net/video/DeprXHFBXMo/видео.html

Not JKA, Keio University. :)
Fantastic video
Weird version of Unsu he did there
It’s probably from Shito Ryu.
@@Garinm you might be right. I also noticed some differences in the other kata - like the second technique in goju we would do kukotso dachi instead of neko ashi dachi, and in Sochin there are quite a few differences in stances and techniques. One interesting technique was the (I think) uchi uke he did after the yoko geri, and not the conventional empi uchi.
beautiful
this is the kinda 9f shit I went through when I was a young man .sensei Morie always had that stick and would hit me for any time I would dare get out 9f my stance . today you can't even raise your voice to your snow flake students . The thing I observed technique did not improve by this marathon. technique improves with slow analysis of your movements by the teacher or looking in the mirror at your self for self examination.
Dang
Our group started the first Special Trainings in the US. They are quite an experience. I wonder how those girls looked so fresh during hard practices?
Amazing how terrible they were back then.
