      The 250 ohm resistor is used when using a HART communicator to calibrate the transmitter. In this demonstration I am only demonstrating the analogue output signal, the HART communicator received the signal in Volts not mA, which is why the resistor is required.

    In which case would you choose a zener barrier above a thermally protected varistor?

      In my understanding a varistor would be used within an electronics circuit to protect against voltage spikes. Zener barriers are used to limit the potential power available to a remotely located instrument device which are located in hazardous areas to prevent enough energy to cause a spark which could result in an explosion.

      Good point, as far as I am aware there would be no reason that a transistor with reverse bias could not be used in place of the zenner diode

    My company wants to wire the RTD directly to a cabinet and use constant voltage excitation. Should one red be on negative, one red be on positive, and the white be on negative? Then, we can measure current in parallel circuits, compare the difference in current, calculate resistance for each circuit, then subtract the two resistances to get RTD resistance?
