I didn't think so at first either, but this song really grows on you, and it makes sense to start with it. besides, I think this is the first song in many years that they wrote together as a band, by just jamming basically.

I think it's great. Jens unfortunately gives away the intro with the foot tapping, but for people who haven't heard the song, it appears to be in a fast 3/16 but when the snare comes in, it's actually in a slow 4/4. The song does drag on but then the psychotic guitar solo comes and in a perfect world, everyone should lose their shit. They used to play Combustion right after. Swarm would be like a slow warm up and then chaos. I'm pretty sure they play Obzen after Swarm now which is fun, but it's also kinda slow..

You would never write something in 3/16. It would make no sense to write it or read it that way. It would be written and read 6/8 if anything. However, you are correct that there are 3 sixteenth notes per bass drum hit so in theory that is correct but if you were handed something written in 3/16 at that speed for the majority of the song it would be ridiculous to read. You have to think of how you would read it on paper and decide what the proper time signature is from there. But of course, meshuggah is always busting those polyrhythms over a 4/4 structure (for the majority of their stuff anyway). They are so hardass.

I'm a drummer who's spent a little too much time toying around with about 90% of Meshuggah's post-2002 discography in Logic, curated an extensive list of synced-up click tracks and found that everything will circle back to the start after several bars of 4/4, you just need to trust them. It must simply be given that we're talking 4/4 automatically when talking about Meshuggah. A song like Glints Collide is easy to drop into 7/8 but still works in 4/4 as long as you can go offbeat for a little bit and trust that you'll find yourself back at the beginning of the beat. Same goes for Pravus. Absolutely terrifying in 4/4, it feels like you're falling without a parachute trying to play that to a slow click track but at double time seems much more manageable. I'm not a classically trained musician by the way so sorry if I'm not using correct terminology..

im also a drummer/percussion teacher. yes everything falls back into place most of the time. if you notice its just after several bars that it comes back around, its 4 bars of 4/4. which makes it that much easier to trust. count the measures of most any meshuggah song and feel how it will start to come back around in that fourth measure and low and behold, the repeat on 1 again. I love it. I think the slow version of concantenation is one of the best they have to feel them out. they just lay back and own.

Playing technical music this long must be stressful. Constant mental strain. Doesn't Marten have a kid? That's stressful. His head of hair still looks pretty full. Shouldn't he be a little more sparse? Same with Tomas, he's been through a divorce.
