My father worked for Duke Power Company building coal fired electric generating plants. The railroad company would bring in several hundred hopper cars of coal and sideline them at the plant. All the plants in the system had switcher locomotives just like this. It hooked to the coal cars and maneuvered them to the rotator which spun the cars upside down to dump the coal. They nicknamed the little switcher engine the “Dinkie”. Day in day out those little engines made sure the plants got the coal they needed.

Obviously, you can’t save everything all the time but I would think this little “critter” might be a small celebrity in its own right. Bet you would have several thousand subscribers who would tune in just to see it move about the yard, merrily performing its job. Maybe a once a month post on the upkeep, yard moves and even a naming contest assuming it doesn’t have one. Good PR.

I hope this little beastie continues to operate long past its centenary.

These are great little engines. Air brakes and electric transmisison are features you'd see on a full roadswitcher.

This primarily used as a pre mill it will he run the Hammel preshredder before being trucked to the hammer mill shredder that has a down stream non ferrous sorting system along with ferrous recovery the reason you pre shred is help increase weight on the trucks going from non hammermill yards and to help keep out "heavys" thats would break the hammermill and also the pre run material goes through the hammermill faster Increasing tonnage at the end of the day electric hammermills can only run at certain times or the electric bill gets very high These are just my experiences

I crushed for years in tx. PA. The first crush job i was on in 88usd One, hell a excavator and a bucket is quicker,if you had a small yard and was not in a hurry be a cheap way to go. But in the industry the more you put out more money, time is money. Won't even operate if you leave the engine and transmission in. Now bmac or. Now sayarden. Or I overbuil us the way to go
