Kuniyoshi by Matthi Forrer via The Folio Society / Prestel : Quick unboxing and review
Really quick unboxing and review of the giant coffee table book Kuniyoshi, showcasing and detailing the life and works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi - one of the most prominent Ukiyo-e artists to ever live.
Let me know if you prefer for me to go more in depth and research the books instead of the quick overviews/unboxings.

This sold out edition is has some gorgeous illustrations and cover details made with illuminescent ink that glows in t...
Review: The Folio Society Limited Edition 2021- The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (700 copies)
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
This is my brief review of Dante Alighieri's epic poem "The Divine Comedy" as published by The Folio Society as a 700 copy limited edition commemorating his date of death 700 years ago. At the time of this review over 2/3ds of the copies have been sold. I'm very happy with this set and I hope the review gives some insight and perspective on the quality and contents. #thefoliosociety #foliosocie...

Having fun on Degroot Keep today. It's a great place to practice trickstabs and mouse tracking. Video actually goes on a couple of minutes after but with less intensity so I decided against using it. steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198040906789
"I have crossed oceans of time to find you" is absolutely not from the book. It's from a movie.
Hello. Do you want to sell it?
Also the other publications of Prestel about Hokusai and Hiroshige are outstanding. Hopefully some day a similar coffee table book about Yoshitoshi will be published!
I had no idea about this publisher, thanks for sharing!
I love everything about the Folio Society's The Divine Comedy by Dante except...the translation. 😢 Robin Kirkpatrick isn't a great translation. It's okay, I guess, serviceable, but not a stand out translation, though in the original Penguin publication it included tons of helpful notes, which overall do constitute great scholarship. However, Kirkpatrick doesn't sing like other translations. Plus, I'm no prude, but still I don't entirely care for his use of four letter words (e.g. "fig fuck" for the Italian "fiche" which is indeed an obscene gesture and meant to be provocative but the four letter word is still too jarring and takes one out of Dante's Commedia a bit too abruptly, at least to my ears). I wish Folio had gone with a more artistically or literarily beautiful translation. My preference would've been for Allen Mandelbaum but there are other translations worthy of the Folio imprint.
While reading i found myself having to refer to online sources for explanations, and there is, as you say, not much poetry in the language. Thanks for the comment!
@@Nodde1991 I can't speak much to the literary merits of the various translations, but it does seem to me in reading Kirkpatrick's that it's a bit of a mishmashed mess. There will be a line that's somewhat poetic, and then a dumbed-down line using chav vernacular. At times I feel like I'm reading an extended wikipedia plot summary, or something similar to the modern prose retelling of The Canterbury Tales. It seems even to my uneducated palate that there's something (perhaps a lot) missing. I'm getting the gist without the substance. I think I got on slightly better with Mandelbaum.
Folio Society?
Prestel, but distributed via folio society
If you would consider selling this please let me know. I’m a huge fan of Dante and collecting versions of this work. Missed out on this. Thanks.
Torn on this edition, I love the concept but I think it’s the cover material that puts me off, wish they went with a red leather instead
I agree! I understand the artistic vision of opulence, and I suppose it's easier from a vegan perspective, but I would also have preferred leather!
So mad I missed this.
Beautiful, thanks for the showcase.
How & where can I buy THIS BOOK SET BOX ❓
Only second hand sites such as eBay I'm afraid. It's a limited edition which sold out in a week or two. Very expensive nowadays, ranging anywhere from 1500usd and more.
Today, I saw this book (still new in plastic foil) standing in a glass shelf in a little store on the courtyard of Bran Castle (Romania). It cost 1990 lei, which is about €402,- euros with the current balance. If I wasn’t a student, I would’ve definitely bought it. So, if someone is looking for a new copy you can find it there.
That's a very fair deal. I imagine someone with some extra souvenir cash will pick it up eventually, and be in for a very nice experience!
@@Nodde1991 yeah the book looks really great on your video (especially the glow in the dark effects), thanks for sharing it!
Hello! Would you be so kind as to do a more extensive review of this book? I really want to buy it, but I can't make up my mind. Can you at least give it a quick flip through on video? I'd like to see how many large format illustrations it has. I would really appreciate it!
Hi, I can maybe find some time for that tomorrow evening. If I recall correctly the large format illustrations are in the front of the book (large meaning spanning across two pages in my definition). Throughout the rest of the books there are mainly illustrations spanning one or 1/2 page. Due to the sheer size of the book they are still substantial. I hope to be able to do a quick flip through tomorrow or tonight. Thanks
@@Nodde1991 Thank you so much for the feedback! As you feel comfortable! I look forward to it)
@@RitaGafi ruclips.net/video/yZSjABUJH4s/видео.html here you go, sorry about the delay
@@Nodde1991 I want to thank you again! It will really help me make a decision about the purchase! Best wishes from Russia!
@@RitaGafi lmao smart
Hi would you donate the book to me as I am ill the now and would love this thanks from Chris
Nice try haha
This is so beautiful!
I agree! 🙂
Great review! A couple of questions: 1. I assume you had it shipped to North America? How long did it take? 2. Was it well packaged?
Thank you! 1.No actually to Sweden, US orders might be a day or two faster as I understand it. I pre-ordered on Sept 7th, it arrived Oct 5th. I saw people receiving earlier than me in the US. 2. Impeccable packaging. It's literally the fort nox of packaging. They probably spent a good sum on that alone.
@@Nodde1991 Thx! I'm still debating whether or not to purchase ... like you said earlier, it is a steep investment
@@jlinclk138 understandable. Last I checked this morning there were around 80 copies left. I've started reading inferno since I published the video. About half of inferno is essays and introductions, but once it gets going its gripping and vivid. Helps to have read the introduction and essays since a lot of the poem references Dantes contemporaries. An external commentary I think would be helpful too. But the triple stanza style helps in digesting the contents. I'd say if you want a beautiful piece of art that will keep a lot of value, and perhaps one of the nicest publications of this book to date (and you really can spare the extra money, and won't suffer for it) then I'd say it's a no brainer.
Thank you so much for the overview. It's 1400CAN, so I can't imagine picking it up. The LE business model of FS doesn't endear me to them, I must admit, but it's a business model that works for them. As one reviewer noted on the site the books are much more beautiful live, and your video clearly affirms that observation. I also agree books are meant to be read, and I'd be buying this set to read and enjoy without hesitation.
It is a very steep investment, for a set of newly produced books. I think there is a culture in the online communities promoting and enabling fiscally dubious collecting, therefore I would say that one should only buy this, or any similarly priced sets if they really do have the spare money saved for something fun like this. Once bought I think it should be read and not stored for the collectors value!
@@Nodde1991 Agreed.
I have mine too. Great to see a different art style from the usual go to regulars. Great video. Enjoyed.
Thank you kindly. It really is a spectacular and unique set!
Really great video and very informative.
Thank you Michael! Very kind of you to say!
You should be lauded by the Folio Society. You have performed a marvelous service for them.
You are much too kind Jeffrey!
Gorgeous edition, shame they used leather.
While I understand and respect the moral and individual preferences of the reader I myself appreciate the usage of real leather both for the symbolism (goats/satan/parchment etc) and the presumed longevity. Would have been nice to have vegan materials as an option to the enthusiasts who are so inclined!
Oh bug off you hippie
@@Nodde1991 isn't vegan leather extremely expensive and difficult to produce? I agree that there are sensibilities that should be catered to if realistically possible,.
Each Canto has a unique illustration in the color of its book (red, grey and blue). So the color is used throughout each volume, you just missed it
Thanks for pointing that out, I should be fact checking before posting 😅
I suppose so, my Steam name is Ticker.
Hey I played with you didn't I... Rocketblast Medieval right?
