I LOVE ALW’s Love Never Dies. The musical is so good. Also, Erik and (Phantom) and Christine FINALLY become a couple and Christine FINALLY chooses Erik which makes me so, so happy. As you can probably tell by my picture and RUclips name and my comment, I completely ship Erik/Christine. By the way, I got to see Love Never Dies Live in Las Vegas, Nevada at The Smith Center with my mom in 2018 when it was on tour. It was so amazing. To me, Love Never Dies is a sequel.

Love Never Dies was one of the first touring musicals I saw live when I was in middle school, I loved it so much that I even bought (and still have) a signed poster by the cast. But looking back, I think I was so entranced by all the technical elements of the show with the costume, set, lighting, and the circus environment. Not surprised that I do tech now, as it is the thing I most remember from watching the show. Loved the spectacle, but definitely not a good sequel.

From comments here it’s extremely obvious no one read the actual book by Gaston Leroux, this brings much more elements from the original book. Raoul is a spoiled and petulant nobleman who has that idea he’s entitled to Christine because they grew up together. The phantom is super freaky obsessed with her and this just drives the point home much more. It’s no doubt that Madame Giry looked after the Phantom with Meg. Furthermore, I think she felt in a sense betrayed for now he turned his back on her and Meg because they basically did everything to keep him safe and offer shelter. Meg even basically became a whore for him to be well kept. And Christine made her choice to be married. I think the idea that this is a spiritual successor is really important because it allows us to have some form of fan service for phantom and Christine for that shipping. However I think the musical motifs are extremely important because it has continuity and that’s what we have in a sequel. If you study music (I have a lot of degrees and experience) music must have consistency for a series. We also have associations with types of melody and writing for scenes and characters. This means the motifs pulled nightlight the same edgy vibe for phantom or the operatic melody of Christine’s parts show her wholesome side, while phantom is in this with more romantic songs and Raoul not so much. Honestly if you study music you see much more the genius and why it works.

Thank you for this! Totally agree with your review. I mean if he was going to change the characters that much, he should have a least given a legitimate reason for it. Like, if Raoul was going to have a drink and gambling problem all of the sudden, at least give a reason for it.

"Love never dies" plot is like a cheap fanfiction of Phantom's fan, in whose mind he is some hot sad misunderstood dude🙄 and to make sweet innocent Raol seem bad or worst in his presence they made him failure husband with gambling habits who just drinks off any problems he faces and blames everything on everyone except himself. At least they made kind of redemption for him, not totally disregarding his past character, and him leaving in peace just to leave Christine with Phantom. Also, yeah, madame Giri was messed up, but making these poor women into obsessed villians, when in the 1st movie they instead supported Christine, was just out of place. But overall, I really liked the songs, even tho, Coney Island theme was totally random and all of that Freak Show/Circus theme in America for Phantom🙄 Christine's son intrigue and move was predictible and lame, I just felt second hand embarassment for the writers. Though boy was a bit annoying at the beginning cause his character's purpose was clear as day, but in the end I kinda started liking him after his solo song where he did foreshadowing that he is a hella talented one - the product of Christine and Phantom's job. And his duet with Phantom was a vibe, kinda cute 'father-son' moment, but creepy at the same time, cause Phantom found him relatable, but too reminding of Christine either....sooo, yk...kinda same situation happened to Christine when she was as of the same age as her son....🤨😶‍🌫 In conclusion, the music slaps, but the story is a total trash.

I definitely liked the Phantom better than Raoul, but I don't know how anyone could sincerely support a Christine/Erik relationship and not have some serious red flags.

Even the songs were .....meh. Even the arrangement of the songs was...meh. I think this might be one of the worst things I've ever seen. It's funny because all of the actors are so good and so sincere about what they're trying to give us. It's just....you know shit.

Team Raoul!!! Tbh, I did love the phantom’s character and depth, but in reality… at the end of the day, once you can hate/kill once, you can do it again. Plus, at the time of POTO, he lived in eternal darkness?? If you remember All I Ask of You, the things Christine asks of Raoul are things the phantom couldn’t have given her. Especially in the film, Raoul was a stable, kind person. While he might be reckless sometimes, Raoul’s sweet and genuine personality is something I wouldn’t see doing a 180 that quickly. This show would've been better if Raoul died, and that is still a bad option as it wouldn't make sense bc of the timeline. I find it iffy if the only way you can make your villain look better is by...making the hero look worse. Also, it's ironic how the moral of the story in the book was to never force love but here is ALW trying to force the main couple apart with a ridiculous plot device and 180 on Raoul's personality.
