It's a real shame that your first impression was so traumatic. I had an RB67 back in 1990 which was stolen from me. That emptiness always remained in my heart. As I own a few 4x5 and 35mm film cameras decided to recently, less than a year ago, to buy an RB67, and the satisfaction I feel when shooting each roll of film is like going back in time. I have already bought three additional lenses and four backs. I love this camera. Cheers!

These are poorly scanned for sure. I recently scanned a couple of rolls of Phoenix with a plustek 8200i and got much better images than these, better shadow detail and much less contrast, along with more saturation and more natural colors. I recommend self scanning these negs and re-evaluate Phoenix after that.

Definitely a tricky roll to use, tried it out recently and I wasn't really feeling the shots as much. Would need to try it out again though at like 100 or 125 iso to see if I would like it better.

Good choice.. those cameras (rb67/rz67)are pretty old and broken.. it's goin to be a hit and miss game.. plus, if you're going to be hiking around, the rb/rz are not your choice... there are other choices and formats .. and you get only 10 images from them.. I lost 5 rolls of film on the rb67 when I first got it.. not to talk of the lost money in developing, scanning , trying to fix and another issue pops up..

When I purchased my RB67, I had it serviced before I used it. He checked the body and film backs for light leaks, replaced worn seals, and adjusted lens shutter speeds and f/stops.

Sorry you had this experience! I have two RBs and they really are amazing cameras. 6x7 is a great format. My dad used an RB67 professionally for many years, though always on a tripod, in a studio, and with a prism finder. The original oil, or even just older service oils in the shutters can gum up, making them jam. Modern synthetic oils shouldn't have this problem, so a CLA would have solved this problem more or less for good. The only issue my dad had with the camera bodies was the cocking lever coming loose a few times. Today, getting these cameras serviced is no longer a "local camera shop" option, sadly. As @mrca2004 notes below, these are 30-40 year old cameras, but I'd also note than most RBs and RZs were used professionally and beaten on daily. It's rare to find a coddled RB. These weren't enthusiast cameras, they were workhorses meant to be used constantly, so it's important to find one in well-maintained condition. Cheers!

You have to remember this as a 30 or 40 year old camera. You should visually check to see if there are light leaks in the back then run a cheap roll through to confirm no leaks. Even more important on a camera that is said not tested. Before you take an image with a new lens, set the lens shutter to a second fire repeatedly and see if it consistently fires for about a second. Then set it at 1/400 and see if it is fast. If it is, the shutter is probably functioning although the speeds may be a bit off. This would have spared you a roll My viewfinder was ok to see out of but replacing it with a rick oleson focusing screen with split prism was super bright and the split screen made nailing focus a breeze. You bought a 30 year old untested camera so don't give up on it. Oh, looks like you wore the strap around your neck. It only takes a couple minutes to realize that is not a good idea. The idiots o you tube say you can't walk around with it... bs. I wear the op tech strap cross body and the chest and back take up some of the weight and I adjust it so it rests on top of my R hip, and I can lightly support it or press it against my body to relieve the weight. 67 is considered the perfect ratio. With 35mm or 645 with portraits you end up chopping of huge amounts from the longest dimension, not with 67. I am not a 66 fan but if you want it, just crop off a small amount to square. With 66 if you don't want square and start cropping, you might as well be shooting 645.

What was off about it?

I’m sure you’re aware of this but since the shutter is in the lens and not the camera body, an alternative solution would be to fix or get a different lens. There are many affordable lenses for the Mamiya RB67. Good luck moving forward!

When you get a vintage camera, the first thing to do is put an inexpensive roll of film through it to see if there are any problems. A usual problem is the film backs leak light and put streaks of light through every image. "The shutter" didn't fail. There is no shutter in the camera body, there is a leaf shutter in each lens. When you get a vintage lens, set it to 1 sexond and see if it stays open about that long. Then set it for the fastest speed and see if it is really quick, here 1/400. If those 2 are ok, than the leaf shutter in the lens is probably ok. If there is internal grease that binds up the shutter, don't waste a roll of film to discover it, do this check. Generally, the camera body is reliable but you can get light leaks from the seals on the rotating back. Give it another try, the images will blow you away. I also changed the focusing screen to an Oleson bright screen with split prism focusing. It's a joy to look through the viewfinder now and nailing focus is easy.
