While it lasted between 1989 and 1990, I took the opportunity to get more video footage of the Trans Karoo Express behind steam by special arrangement with Management, on Fridays from Johannesburg to Klerksdorp.

By special arrangement, class 16DA wide-firebox No.879 was rostered to work a goods train between Bethal and Springs. Not the usual work for an express passenger engine but it was worth photographing!

Blue Train with class 12E units; Sun City Express with class 37 diesel; BT again; Steam Special to Heidelberg with 16DA 879; Cullinan Steam Special with 25NC 3472 Lilly to Pretoria and 15CA 2850 to Cullinan; Return of Steam Special from Cullinan and finally 25NC 3472.

This clip starts with the preparation of 3476 at Braamfontein ERS and then views of her hauling the Trans Karoo Express in November 1989. This is followed by the Trans Karoo Express being hauled by class 15F 3135 from Springs Loco Depot in December 1989.

On the 10th of October 1990, a steam special was run in the OFS and this video concentrates on the section Kroonstad - Bloemfontein which shows the train being hauled by class 16E no.857 Ann Smith - Bloemfontein Queen. The video opens with a brief view of the special being hauled by 25NC 3410.

On the 16th and 23rd of May 1990 the Blue Train was hauled by steam - as a special concession using class 25NC no.3476 between Johannesburg and Klerksdorp. This is followed by scenes of the Trans Karoo Express also hauled by special arrangement, by class 25NC locomotives on Fridays and Saturdays between Johannesburg and Klerksdorp between 1989 and 1991.

This is a short video originally shot on S8 movie film of the world record test run of 240kmh on 3ft6in gauge! and the first high speed daily train service between Pretoria and Johannesburg known as the Metroblitz operated during 1984. Test run: 31 October 1978.
All of it fell apart after 1994.

If African people, the buying force of SA, were included...the train would have been viable. It's true, (white) people in South Africa are not public transport orientated, except those of them who are the poor and sensible to share public transport, and obviously Africans who have since and always been accommodative....

When I was a kid, we were friends with the Station Master of Sarnia station near Pinetown, KZN. I often saw him do double arm token exchanges on Express electric units. Occasionally a steam unit came through. I remember on a few occasions travelling from Dbn to Park Rynie pulled by a steam loco. My dad always told us never to look out of the windows facing the unit because you get soot and coal dust in your eyes, we always did and we always got soot and dust in our eyes. LOLS Good memories.

This just popped up in my recommendation feed and brought back some great memories. I was on this tour, my second trip to SA, which was not that easy in those days with the sanctions still in place (I ended having to fly from Oz to Jo'burg via Singapore and London Must have been mad 😂. It's all gone now, the marvellous collection of locomotives, the historic rolling stock and the entire opportunity of being able to do it again. Thanks for the memories...

@@lespivnic Sorry. I don't want to ridicule anything about South Africa it's people or railways. I visited in 1994 and admired South Africa as a country that had an excellent railway system. It reflected the values of the European settlers building the country up. I have every respect for the Indigenous Black and Mixed Race people too whom I met and hoped their country would become a High Income country for all. They all valued education. South Africa has this potential. As usual Politicians let us down.
Unfortunately, all these types of developments and progress ended after 1994.
