Adam's parents sent the letter to the band, and he wanted the letter to be an inspiration for a song, since he felt like it was no reason of importance to anyone. Blink-182 made the song for the fan, but the ending is altered, saying that Adam survives. Greg Barnes, survivor and witness to the death of his best friend in the Columbine Massacre in 1999, hanged himself a year later while listening to the song. The band was very criticised after that which made Mark Hoppus finding a more "acceptable" explanation for the song.
