Bluebird Spatial orientation issues!
The bluebird did not like a piece of pine straw that she was using for her nest. She struggled to remove it as it was larger than the opening in the house she was unable to orient it correctly.

Our bluebird house has been up for a few weeks. There have been multiple visitors, but none had started building a nest. These two birds arrived and appeared to be “touching cloacas.” A couple of days, they started building a nest. Hopefully, there will be eggs soon. #bluebird #mating #matingseason #fertilization

Video of Bluebird chasing away a Bluejay This afternoon a bluejay landed between the birdbath and the birdhouse. Watch the bluebird defending his territory. The bluejay is in the lower right part of the video and is sometimes moves out of the picture. For the second part of the video, I have slowed the video down to 25% of the original speed. The bluejay flew away after the 3rd or 4th pass.

    Brown headed cowbirds are terrible birds. They come in flocks and drive song birds off feeders. They'll eat every last scrap of food placed out for other birds. And they are brood parasites. They lay their eggs in other birds nests and force the nest owner to raise their young, which hatches first, and which is usually much larger than its host. If the nest owner discovers the impostor, the female cowbird will destroy the entire songbird's nest. The Brown Headed Cowbird is a significant contributor to the decline of songbirds in North America.

    • @shannonspage9360
      @shannonspage9360 Год назад

      That is mostly false. The cow bird will lay eggs in as many nests as possible. Either they don't remember every nest it used or can't recognize there own chick. Attacking the nests that reject their eggs could either reduce the number of usable nests for them nest season due to the brood loss or could increase the incidents of birds becoming more vigilant about avoiding the cow bird invading the nest to lay the egg in the first place. Some birds once the cow bird egg is identified will build an entire new layer of nesting material moving only their own eggs and leaving the cow bird egg in the lower level where it will not get enough heat for incubation. Birds are evolving to identity the cow bird eggs which sometimes forces the cow bird to try using new bird species for the potential con. This too so.stones has disastrous results for the cow bird chick. House finches are a good example. Either way the cow bird that makes this egg was busted by the host birds and the female bluebird attacked it for 13 min inside the nest box. It was pecked in the head repeatedly, it had a huge raw bald spot on the top and back of head. It was so disoriented it couldn't figure out how to exit the nest box. The fe.ale blue bird wasn't letting up. The owner eventually opened ed the top of the box so it could get out. It is uncertain it she survived the attack. So I am sure it won't be visiting this nest again one way or another

      I find it unlikely that the cowbird parent returns to destroy and attack the parent birds and nestlings. It runs the risk of becoming injured in the altercation with no benefit in doing so. Some birds will also build a new layer of nest just over the cowbird egg keep it from getting warmth with kills it or drastically delays the hatching.

      @@PBandShayne Yes, this time the Blue Bird identified the parasite egg, but this doesn't always happen. And that's kind of the allure of nature films; we get to see this sort of life and death struggle between creatures. Sometimes the host identifies the parasite and destroys it. Sometimes the parasite fools the host at the expense of the hosts and it's young. But I'm just saying, from a legal and ecological stand point, do not interfere. Both species are protected in America and Canada, meaning you will catch massive fines if caught. So definitely don't do it and post video evidence. But also, don't do it because both organisms should have an equal and un-impeded chance of survival in thier natural habitat. This is nature, it can be savage by human morality, but it's how these organisms survive and evolve. Especially with shrinking habitats, even small scale interferences can have big impacts on local populations.
