Wood Turning A Decorative Bird House
In this video I will be woodturning a decorative birdhouse. The body is hackberry, the roof is hard maple, the spindle is claro walnut, and the perch is sapele. This project was plagued with problems from the beginning, mostly self-induced :)
I went waaaaay too thin on the spindle, and it cracked while I was waxing it. It isn’t completely broken, and it luckily stayed together so I could snap some pics!
If you like this video please consider giving it a thumbs up and subscribing! Thank you so much for watching and have a great day!

Wood turning Pine 2x4 Ring and Jewelry Holder Easy Gift!
Просмотров 5532 года назад
In this woodturning video I show how I turn a ring and jewelry holder from an offcut of a regular old pine 2x4 that you can buy at any hardware store or even find laying around your shop. The finial is made from purple heart, but a piece of hardwood dowel from the hardware store would work just as well. These are quick to make and are the perfect last minute gift. Thanks for watching! Thank you! Very good video an understanding of wood turning..
Thank you for your kind words, John! I'm glad you got something from the video. Thank you so much for watching!
Nice idea. Good lookin' out. I find sanding therapeutic...lol.
Thank you for watching! Yes, I suppose it can be therapeutic. Depends on the wood for me. A sense of satisfaction is derived from sanding straight grained wood to a silky smooth surface. Happy turning!
Why wouldn’t you just drill the tea light hole on a drill press first and then put it on you chuck, that way you wouldn’t have to glue anything
At the time, my drill press was buried in a corner of my garage. Besides, I prefer drilling on the lathe when possible. I find it more accurate. Also, not everyone has a drill press. The hot glue method makes this project easier for those with a lathe, but without a drill press. Hot gluing the piece only takes a moment, and a quick blast from a heat gun removes it just as quickly. However, the drill press method would work perfectly fine. Thank you for your comment, and thank you for watching!
Love the outside shape of the bowl. It turned out great.👍
Thank you for your comment and for watching! I really appreciate it!
The lil bugs that live in there will serve as food for the birds : D
😂The circle of life. Thanks for watching!
What a great idea for all those off cuts. I'll have to make some. Great video!
It is a great way to use up scrap. You can also make small change bowls or jewelry holders from them as well. Thank you for comment and for watching!
That is a very cool piece. Great choice of woods to use.
I wasn't sure about the colors but I think it worked out in the end. Thank you for your kind comment and thank you watching!
great job
Thank you for your comment, and thanks for watching!
Interesting design. Nice.🙂🙂
Thank you for the comment, and I appreciate you watching the video!
Very nice piece. That Walnut had spectacular grain patterns.
Thank you! Yes, the walnut was definitely the star of the show. I have more of the claro walnut hanging around my shop, so you will definitely be seeing it again in future videos. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, and thank you for watching!
Wow! That is pretty :)) I 've never seen one like that let alone get to watch the process. That's so,so cute. You are a good son to make your Mom something with your own hands. I love it I'am sure she will love it. Thank You for all your hard work just for us!
Belle réalisation donne l'envie d'essayer merci pour le partage
Merci beaucoup pour vos gentils mots et merci d'avoir regardé!
Came out really nice. I might make some this weekend.
Thanks! They're fairly quick to batch out once you make a couple. I hope you make a video, I would love to see how yours turn out!
Très jolie bravo 👍👏
Merci beaucoup!
That turned out very beautifully. I want to try and make a nutcracker someday, just need the tap.
Thank you! The tap is a great investment because you can make threaded glue blocks for your lathe with it. Of course, you could always use a nut and drill a recess in the top of the nutcracker body for that. I thought your channel name looked familiar. My wife and I have watched your videos before. You do some great work! Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Very nice this job Man. Depending of the finalizing form we can put food into it, right !
Thank you! As long as you use a food safe finish, you can put food in it regardless of the form. I used a food safe walnut oil and bowl wax on this piece. It would be perfect for fruit, nuts, even salad. Thank you for comment and for watching!
Why did you not drill the hole on the Drill Press?
I didn't want to dig it out, and I find my lathe more accurate. But you can certainly use a drill press. Using a drill press would save time, and you wouldn't have to use the hot glue method I used.
Nice, I like the leg turning, didn't think of that before. Will give it a try.
I think it really adds a little something to the tealight holder. Thanks for watching!
Even though it was a little bit off like you mentioned it still turned out beautiful. Well done sir
Thank you very much for your kind words and for watching!
Very nice idea! Inspired by your video I made some myself. Ich drilled the hole for the candle with my drill press, so I didn't have the work with the hot glue.
That's an excellent alternative! I'm just too lazy to drag my drill press out😅 I am happy to hear you were inspired by my video! If you feel like sharing a pic of your work, my email address is thebeardedturner@gmail.com I would love to feature viewer projects at the end of my next video. Thank you for your comment and for watching!
That is a really cool bowl. Great choice in lumber.
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Гарно вийшло. Мені дуже сподобалось
Велике спасибі! Я ціную коментар і дякую за перегляд! Сподіваюся, переклад правильний
Do you feel the difference in wood grains as you goug?
That's a good question. It was really hard to tell with all the vibration. But when I was roughing out the outside of the bowl, I noticed the putpleheart had a tendency to chip out more than the padauk. If I was to do it again, I would have cut the blank round on the bandsaw before mounting to a faceplate. That would have saved some time and possibly reduced vibration. Like I said in the video, I took some shortcuts that I paid for later. Also, the different woods did sand slightly different, with the purple heart seeming to be a little harder than the padauk. Thanks again for your excellent question and for watching!
@Joseph Longwell The Bearded Turner good to know.
Joseph, great way to explain your process, thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for watching!
great creation. well done bro.💪👌👌👌
Thank you very much for the kind words, and thank you for watching!
Where did you get your long worth chuck
I got the precut plywood discs from www.etsy.com/shop/CurlyWoodShop But he seems to be no longer making them😔 The bumpers are rubber stoppers I believe I ordered from a company called WidgeCo. The hardware is 1/4"-20 bolts with washers and nuts. I 3D printed some simple knobs to make tightening easier. Thank you for your question, and thanks for watching!
Awesome idea, thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
A nice bowl Joseph I like the combination of purpleheart and padauk
Thank you very much! I think it's a nice color combination. I want to do one with padauk, walnut and yellow heart eventually. Thank you for watching! I have subbed to you channel, you have some great looking projects!
You say it;s a hot mess when you started but lit looks darned good to me! Other people may not tell whats going on when they are turning. Are you maybe going to open an E=bay shop in the future? I also see you had many views. I hope the next that views it gives ya a thumbs up!🤗
I like that profile, turned out good!
Thank you Jim! It was one of those things that just kind of came into its own unplanned 😄. But I am happy with it. Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment, I really appreciate it!
Wow it turned out great Joseph, well done! 😃
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words, Teckle! 😊
Beautiful work...is it for sale?
Thank you! Yes, actually. I just haven't listed it on Etsy yet. I will update you when I do. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Color combo! Subbed!
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I plan to do more multiple colored projects in the future.

Très jolie travail bravo 👌
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!
I play a mean skill saw...
Yeah? I might need to hire you on then
@@JosephLongwellBeardedTurner qqqqqqaqqqq😅
I have never seen anyone use a clamp to hold wood to router, great idea and looks much safer than holding small pieces by hand . Great video 👍
I like to use whatever I can to make the work safer. I've grown very attached to my fingers over the years😀Just make sure the clamp is on the opposite side you are routing, I usually have to move it at least once, but it only takes a moment. Thank you for your feedback and thank you for watching!
What part of the Philly area are you from? (Accent gives it away if I am right) LOL Very nice project. I've never seen anything like this before. Definitely making some. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
I actually live in West Virginia, grew up in South Eastern Ohio. Thank you for your kind words. I'm sure you'll have great success with your nutcracker! Would love to see it when you're done. If you want, you can email me a photo, and I will put it at the end of one of my videos. Thank you so much for watching, subscribing, and your kind words. Take care and have fun turning!
That is amazing! I enjoyed watching this. How long have you been turning ? The nutcracker is so cute. I would like to purchase one. Do you sell them? Thank You for all the hard work you put in your presentation. Hope to see another video soon.
I am the proud owner of this particular piece. 😊
I am glad you like it! Thank you for watching! ❤❤
Excelent. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Sound very muffled may need to invest in a better microphone
The poor voice audio can be attributed to the face mask and face shield I wear while turning. Future videos will have voice over instead of live audio. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
He's wearing a mask for the dust.
That is so awesome to watch you make your ring holder. It turned out beautiful, Loved the video and the music was good. It takes a steady hand and control.
Very good idea👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I would like to do wood working. What should I purchase first? What is the best book for woodworking for beginners ? I subscribed so I will be lookin for the next video.
Woodworking can be started with nothing more than a tape measure, a hand or circular saw, and a drill/driver. Woodturning on the other hand, requires at minimum a wood lathe, some woodturning chisels, some kind of sandpaper, safety gear, and of course wood to turn. Learn To Turn by Barry Gross is a good book to start with. And there are many great resources on RUclips such as Worth The Effort's turning videos and WOOD magazine's Lathe Basics videos.
