You think the unpredictable nature of a competition is a bad thing?? Seeing underdogs topple mainstay champions is what makes sports amazing. It gives fans hope that even against the odds, there’s a reason to watch and tune in. Why bother watching a league that has had the same champion for 7 of the last 8 seasons when I can watch matches that deliver the unexpected on a more consistent basis. It’s called parity. And frankly, more European leagues could use that right about now.

@@golztv I can't clearly define it but I vaguely see two different types of scenarios here. In my opinion, attempts to prevent domination of one team or a few teams is one thing (the case in European leagues), creating unpredictable results is another (the case in MLS). In the former, those teams which consistently play better win the championship, and that's predictability in my opinion. I do not have any issue with this predictability. If a team play better consistently, they deserve the trophy. You may argue that it is boring for fans of other teams, well, then what these teams can do is simply play better and do it consistently. In European leagues rich clubs can spend good money so less affluent clubs can hardly compete. I agree that is an issue, and that's something the league has to address and regulate. In MLS, the problem is the playoff format is set up in such a way that those teams that have consistently played the best do not end up winning the trophy. Everyone talks about how few Supporter Shield winners have won the MLS Cup in the past. Some may think it's thrilling and unpredictable, I see it as a problem.

Simply put, you can regulate the league to create parity, but you don't punish the teams that play well consistently by making the results unpredictable.

@@ThomasTsoiTheTraveller Fair point about European leagues but I wholeheartedly disagree when it comes to MLS. As soon as Messi entered the league, MLS reformatted the playoffs to ensure the probability of top teams going out early was minimal at best. 3 matches against the lowest seed available, with 2 of those being at home. The league did everything to ensure that the top teams (aka the most consistent teams through the entire season) were given the highest odds of moving on to the next round and Miami (along with Columbus and Cincinnati) still found a way to botch it. You can choose to look at it cynically and fault the "postseason model" or you can be an optimist and appreciate the beauty of sport. Here, we choose the latter.

@@golztv Exactly, it's not about Miami, just look at how both Columbus and Cincinnati got knocked off (and don't forget about LAFC, they were so close too), I can't honestly pretend that this is not a systemic issue. Could it be a scheduling problem or what? I don't know. But it honestly saddens me if a team that have been playing so-so in the regular season just suddenly find a moment of brilliance in a few games and get crowned the best team of the league of the year. For me it's injustice. I know it's sports and we all want some excitement, but imagine this is your life, would you honestly want it?

Agreed, similar to how some teams structure their season ticket packages. Some fans aren’t able to attend all games so a middle ground works well there.

No I agree. But the same issue that has plagued Cincy for much of the year is still an issue. If Lucho or Orellano doesn't get on the score sheet, I have no idea where the goals come from. Charlotte seems to have the same issue right now.

It almost becomes a conversation of what you value more. There’s a lot to be said about taking a bad team and making them relevant/competitive again. Vanney went above and beyond by making his team a true contender in the West. I wouldn’t say Colorado is there yet. But then again, it’s a results oriented business and trophies matter more than just about anything. But some sleeper managers out there that deserve shouts for this shortlist for sure. Nancy probably deserves it but I’m not mad at anyone shouting Cherundolo, Vanney.

Exactly. To me, success can only be measured after the 2nd and 3rd seasons. After all, it’s where both Estevez and Wolff seemed to struggle the most (exception being that Conference Final season for Austin)

We all know how good LAFC can be, especially considering the players, resources and fan base they have. But that’s exactly why they’re overrated.
