    As a data scientist: the writer of this script has little idea what AI is and is not.

    • @AITheScienceGuy
      @AITheScienceGuy 10 дней назад

      What would you say AI is?

    • @joeybru
      @joeybru 10 дней назад

      @AITheScienceGuy First I would say that AI has become a marketing term. So, I would speak about simpler but well polished implementations of Machine Learning algorithms (ex:XGboost) and more complex artificial neural network based architectures. The latter are the main building blocks of generative tools like visual processing and language models. The point here is less how they are built and trained (imortant part of the building process!) rather: how do they behave. Today, these are very useful, fascinating tools, and development is still fast. In broad terms, these are "statistical learning algorithms, and may be thought of doing an interpolation on their training data. (That can be many millons of pages of text for a language model /LLM). For historic or whatever reasons we like to compare these tools to human/mammalian cognitive processes. It pays to stop and think, why we would do that. (artificial neural ntwks are NOT similar to biological brains). Anyway, AFAIK, real "creativity", "intelligence" of a higher mammal that can learn genericly, not just single tasks is not really in sight - as far as I know. Its a bit subjective tho - do multilingual translators count as "creative"? But to start at the beginning: I am not aware of any magical definition of "intelligence" or "creativity" based on atomic principles that would satisfy a physicist like me ;-) These concepts are losely understood - perhaps better to say: felt - emergent properties of extremely complex systems (mammalian brains) that we very poorly understand. Cognitive scientists may well contradict me tho as they know more about it. Hopelessly OFF: There are computer simulations of biological systems, like a single ce Escheria coli carbon metabolism. It is AFAIK quite seldom that these models/simulations successfully go above interpolation to extrapolation - that is, roughly speaking, predicting something we did not put into their 'learning' data in the first place - field is called "systems biology" (I was in that field till 2011) Now any brain or whatever neurological system is WAY more complex than that. We do not have the raw computing power to simulate billions (10^9) of neurons in a not-even-realistic neural model. Of course it is a very useful field, we may in the near future understand, for example how hearing signal processing works and that will have medical applications. But cognition, self-awareness? That is AFAIK further away. I hope I could get across my picture how limited our current knowledge is.

    How do those star clusters work. It feels completely counterintuitive having a lot of stars cramped together

    • @AITheScienceGuy
      @AITheScienceGuy 14 дней назад

      Star clusters are groups of stars that formed together from the same cloud of gas. There are two types: open clusters, which are young and loosely packed, and globular clusters, which are older and tightly packed. Since the stars are similar in age and distance, clusters are great for studying how stars change over time.
