The Partial Historians
Добавлен 13 ноя 2020
The Partial Historians are Dr Rad and Dr G. We're two historians who specialise in ancient Rome. We discuss, spar, and laugh our way through different aspects of the Roman world. We’d love to have you along for the ride!
Dr Fiona Radford is an expert on Rome on film and wrote her thesis on Kubrick’s Spartacus. Her research interest in film makes her an exponent of not only Ancient History, but also Reception Studies. Dr Radford’s work has taken her across the globe and into rarely viewed archives.
Dr Peta Greenfield is an expert on the Vestal Virgins, a collective of six priestesses whose aedes (temple) was located at the edge of the Roman forum. Her research interests include: the intersection between religion and politics in Rome, the Late Republic (c. 150 BC - 31 BC) and Augustan Period (c. 31 BC - AD 14), and the role of women.

Episode 157 - From Delphi, With Love
In 398, the Romans received some worrying signs from the gods, and now we return with a special message for them: From Delphi, With Love.
Episode 157 - From Delphi, With Love
In 397 BCE, the Romans were waging war on all fronts. On top of their ongoing siege at Veii, they were contesting their hold on Anxur with the Volscians, and their colony at Labici against the Aequians. Never ones to shy away from drama, the Romans were also dealing with internal division between the patricians and the plebeians. PHEW! Sounds exhausting.
Rude Raiders
The Tarquinii, from another part of Etruria, also noticed that the Romans had a lot on their plate. Now was their moment to attack and score some booty! The...

Episode 156 - Kidnapped!

In 398 BCE, the Romans were still enmeshed in their siege at Veii. Whilst the Romans waited, worrying portents started to appear. What did they all mean? Episode 156 - Kidnapped! The most concerning portent was a sudden increase in the levels of the lake in the Alban Woods. It was positively spooky. An embassy was despatched to visit the Delphic Oracle so that the mystery could be unravelled. L...

The Fifth Century BCE in Review
Просмотров 573 месяца назад
The fifth century BCE in Rome is the century that saw the idea of the republic flourish and falter only to flourish again. The plebeians rose up to fight for their rights and to enjoy the fruits of their hard work on the battlefield. The patricians held on to their prestige and power with a vice-like grip and Rome began to expand their influence in the local region. At least that’s what our anc...

The Plebeians Push into Power

We jump into the year 400 BCE which has more excitement than you may have anticipated. Could this be the year we have evidence for a plebeian break-through into the important magisterial position of military tribune with consular power? Love your podcast, usually listen in on Castbox but decided to walk the Roman road to your YT channel. Great episode!
@@WillMowass awww thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed the episode ☺️
I tried telling the cats that since it's Saturnalia they should wait on me. They refused.
Well this is most disappointing, but very much to be expected with cats. Our certainly refuse to play along at Saturnalia, so you’re in good company 😅
Just discovered you two. Nice...
We hope you enjoy!
Firsties!
We have a winner!!
Great discussion and background for reading Michael Hudson’s book “The Collapse of Antiquity”. I’ve been struggling with the transition from Roman monarchy to republic … so great info!
@@buddypalomo so glad you enjoyed this episode ☺️ Professor Cornell is a great expert in this area and we were thrilled to have the chance to come to grips with some of the thorny topics of this early period of Rome.
"Death before Dishonor"
A mantra that some Romans took more seriously than others!
@partialhistorians That is the reason Virginius gave for the slaying of his daughter Verginia--- it doesn't mean what the tattooed marine thinks it means- the History around this statement gives it a much deeper more powerful meaning!
I've listened to 2 other series that cover roman history. Today I discovered yours and so excited for the level of detail. Excited to listen to more!
Ahhh, we hope you enjoy! The sound quality improves over time which befits the fact we've been working our way through the 5th century BCE since 2015 and only just finished!
This is really fun
Just remember. This the same cry baby who is STILL crying about Absu playing hells heros
Gens Papiria will become powerful again
They just need a little time
thank you he is my ancestor
Love this episode so much, just finished Emma Sutton's book so was like OH I GET THIS REFERENCE!" l
So glad you enjoyed!
You guys are awesome can’t wait to for the new book!
Aww thank you!! Excited to be getting into the writing :)
Iō Saturnālia! Thank you for an excellent podcast. Stay cool.
You too! May the winter treat you kindly :)
Dr. Rad, I purchased a jumper like yours a few years ago, and it's getting kid of ratty. Where do I purchase another?

This was the first Latin textbook that I used as an undergrad :)
Me too! @@partialhistorians I still use it, and it was published by my alma mater to boot!
Can't wait to read the book and see where the podcast goes in 2023!
Thank you so much!! Wishing you and yours all the very best 😊
Can't wait to read it! Thanks for all you do!!
Awww thank you!! We hope you enjoy it 😊
Great News!
Thank you so much 🎉
All right ladies you really need to put captions under your pictures on your website because I listen to this podcast on Spotify and and I guess wrong which was which and now this video is freaking me out LOL
Now you know the truth!! Hopefully it gets more comfortable with time 😊
I came here for nachos…?
And you found the greatest (and only) Nacho king ancient Rome ever produced!
@@partialhistorians lest I be disappointed
I just heard about you on the Life of Caesar podcast and found you on both Spotify and RUclips. As a classically educated scholar I am happy to see a larger interest being shown by the General Public in Roman history and I am thrilled to see more historians like yourselves using these media platforms to educate the public.
Thank you so much! We're hoping to expand more into videos over time - there's a real space for accessible scholarship :)
You guys could kill it if you also did an episode on late Roman women, I mean you have Christian martyrs, and sister and wives who marry guns and become women under barbarian leaders, and then leaders like Zenobia, and mother's of emporers!!
Thanks so much! We will definitely get to the women in the later eras. There's so many fascinating characters to delve into. One of the benefits with the later period is that our sources are often much more contemporary with the events related so the history can even more alive in those cases.
The angel wings are epic!
Thanks for reminding us of the true spirit of Saturnalia!
You're most welcome!
After the current fires subside may we all remark that now we begin to live like human beings. Thank you for the holiday message of shared humanity and care for one another. Happy Saturnalia!
The weather this year (in Australia at least) is more mild than last year. We hope this festive season is a happy one. Io Saturnalia!
Funnest Roman history podcast right there. Please more Spurius Furius!
Careful what you wish for - the spirit of Spurius Furius may be restless ;)
