Old Fart Likes Knives
Добавлен 23 июл 2020
"Old Fart, Likes Knives"
General ramblings of an old fart who enjoys collecting knives - mainly small "gentleman's folders".
In a lifetime of doing light tasks that needed a cutting tool, I kept buying knives that attracted me at the time, then misplacing them. Recently, I dug them out of all their various locations around the house, and it was quite a pile. Hmmm... I think that's a collection. In these videos, which started as a COVID-19 Stay-Home project, I give a tour through the collection.
Any knives I show in my collection are my own, purchased with my own funds - there are no review samples and no affiliate links or other monetization.

Sandrin Dellatorre
A very thin, beautifully executed slip joint with a twist: the blade is tungsten carbide, not steel.

Benchmade Weekender
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
This is a new offering from Benchmade. A 2-blade slip joint knife that also includes a bottle opener. It's well done, and feels like a good utility knife for camping and such purposes. I don't especially need a bottle opener - but I hope this may indicate Benchmade getting into the "sw*ss army knives done right" market.

A new knife from a new company formed by known and respected designers: A front-flipper framelock with a very smooth action and great manufacturing.
The Wayland slip joint by James.
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
A "modern traditional" slip joint with premium materials, good action, and excellent fit-and-finish. This is my first James, and I'm impressed.
Pena X-Series Micro Apache
Просмотров 5082 года назад
Another of the well-made X-Series by Pena, this knife is tiny without feeling like the small size compromises it in any way.
Terrain 365 Caiman
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
Another knife from Terrain 365, with a non-ferrous, non-rusting blade. This improves on their Otter with a more traditional design, and has a good slip-joint action.
Quiet Carry West PVD

A modern slipjoint from QC that gets it all right - blade, mechanism, and finish, this might be my favourite slipjoint.
Zero Tolerance 0452CF

Purchased by mistake, this knife is *very* large. Much more than what I collect. That said, if you need a huge folder, it's a well-made knife with good action and good blade. Too big for me though.
Lamoureux and Sons Fermont

A small Canadian family business, Lamoureux makes mainly hunting and bushcraft knives, but has this compact little nail-nick, frame-lock folder.
Tactile Rockwall

Tactile, whose pens I like, makes two great folders. The Bexar (already reviewed) and this thumb-stud liner-lock. It has great mechanism and all kinds of attention to detail that makes me a big fan.
Spyderco McBee

Received as a gag because it was cute, this turns out to be a surprisingly sturdy and capable knife, just tiny.
Vero Engineering Neuron
Просмотров 5732 года назад
A non-locking, double-detent knife that is compact and very light, in the style of the Vero Axon.
We Knives Smooth Sentinel

A beautifully-finished, elegant gents knife. Very nice side-flip action, handsome carbon fibre scales, and a stonewashed finish. It's a comfortable size, very pocket friendly, and with a great blade.
Vero Axon Mini
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
A unique looking knife from Vero Engineering, the Axon Mini is small and very light. This one is fitted with natural Micarta scales, which are very casual looking and feeling.
Pena X-Series Mula
Просмотров 4502 года назад
Another Pena from his X-series production knives. This is a lager-mid-sized knife with a larger blade and more "user" feel. I like that it has a thumb stud opening instead of his more common front-flipper. It's not a "decorative" gentleman's knife, but a great one for casual Fridays and weekends.

Monterey Bay Knives, Mini Old Guard, Titanium
I've been looking at multiple knife retailers as well as ZT's website; the portruding blade issue noted in the video looks like it was either a defect in this individual knife or corrected in later iterations because I cant see the blade portruding in any other pictures or videos.
Worst sound ever on a yt video👎i'm out before it started
Great looking knife. Very nicely done video. Thank you sir.
Great review as always. You should have a lot more followers than you do.
Which one feels better in hand, full or mini? Can/do you get a good full grip on the mini? Does the full size take up a lot of space in pocket? Is it easy to carry? Thank you.
My story exactly! I just got my first Large Sebenza 31 (magnacut, box elder). Underwhelmed at first, 2 weeks in and I’m already looking at a Small Sebenza 31 bog oak! I think I’m maybe ALL the way down the CRK rabbit hole.
It's a functional knife, it's a well built knife, it's a good knife, but for my taste it's a boring looking knife with 'average' steel and materials. I fail to understand the 'special appeal' for Chris Reeves knives. But that's just me.
Very nice find & addition to the collection.
If you put the whole knife in your palm and use your pinky and ring fingers to hang on to the clip i think youll learn to appreciate the front flipper idea
I the carbon grip slippery?
It's smooth - no texture. It would be slippery if oily or wet, I supposed. What Nick S would say "not a good knife for the vaseline factory". As a light in-pocket knife that doesn't get oily, I find it is plenty grippy enough to hold comfortably.
Where did you go😢
Great channel! Such a pleasure to listen to someone so humble, calm, and sophisticated.
In my case is the opposite, it’s one of my top 10 edc rotation regarding folders, it covers as a camping, hiking and last ditch defensive tool very close to perfection .💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Nice 🎉❤
That trick of trimming the tape is a facepalm for me. Seems obvious but I'd never have thought of it. That trick alone was worth watching but the whole video was good. Thanks and subbed.👍
“My knife doesn’t lock and I can’t flip it open” 😂 cry me a river
If only they'd made the blade just 4mm shorter, it would have been UK carry legal. What a pity.
Get a JekyltoHyde Backspacer. You’ll love it
I am looking at the small vs large Sebenza 31 as my first Chris Reeve knife (also Umnumzaan) as an EDC and was curious if the small would be too small. I really enjoyed your review and loved your background music btw. Thank you so much! Cheers from VA *Subscribed
I bought this version and ended up buying more. one with the point and the other sheepfoot.
That's not a switch blade, and you're not a gangster; hilarious: lol! 😂
I just ordered this exact knife in a left handed version. I cannot wait to get it in the mail.
Nice review. Curious if the pvd finish still looks new or does it eventually wear off.? Do you still like it?
are you ok ?
I’m also a big fan of the West. I bought the original version few years ago, and reviewed it on my channel. From memory, my only thought in a negative sense were that the bead blasted finish of mine showed a lot of snail trails and the screw for the clip wasn’t countersunk. I might have added that mine was D2, but at the time D2 was still a popular Steel amongst premium knife makers. The finish on yours cures the snail Trail problem, the clip screw being under the clip obviates non-countersunk issue and the upgrade to 20 CV is very welcome. Also welcome. Is the through nail Nick. It’s much easier to keep clean and make the knife ambidextrous. I don’t see the clip as an issue as this isn’t a quick deploy item. I am left-handed because my right hand is paralysed, but in the main clips side really isn’t an issue. anyway, reviews of the West are not exactly ten a penny , so yours is very welcome. I enjoyed it, and I’ve subscribed to your channel.
Thank you this was very helpful for me, as a rookie. I am an old fart, just a rookie in knife sharpening. 'I appreciated the clamp angle, that is clamping along an imaginary line from tip to heel. Also, only going 10 passes at a time when achieving a burr to maintain a symmetrical edge.
I love mine,...every review ive see the reviewrs love them,.. dont get this review one bit.
GREAT THING about 8cr13mov is the ease it will take a very keen edge. i find after a full resharpening that i can go a long time with this steel using a cutlery steel to touch it up each day. it comes back to razor sharp easily.
Well done!
Just ordered mine. Postie should deliver by this Tuesday 😊😊
nicely done
I really like your videos, you don’t spend too much time getting off track, great job!
Nice review sir. This is my second blue class Benchmade. The first was the Benchmade Weekender. I've been exclusively a black class user for the last 15 years mostly their OTS and OTF autos. I wanted a practical non-scary EDC that was one handed and the 535-3 checked all the boxes. The quality of build and construction is absolutely first rate.
I ENJOYED YOUR REVIEW OF THE 940-1... YOU HANDLED IT GENTLY WITHOUT THE WHIPPER SNAPPER EFFECTS THAT ARE CONTINUOUS WITH MOST USERS... I SHOULD COLLECT AT LEAST ONE OF THESE... I ENJOY AIRCRAFT & THEIR CONSTRUCTION... SOME OF THE MOST PRIZED AIRCRAFT ARE CONSTRUCTED OF CARBON FIBER... THAT IS REASON FOR MY APPRECIATION...
I was interested when Benchmade intro'd this knife, but not enough to buy it......that is until they came out with the S90V bladed model with stone washed blackening on all the metal as well as burgundy linen micarta scales. I purchased that model and have really been happy with it. It is such a laid back casual knife which doesn't alarm non-knife people around me. Best of all is just feels like an old friend after just a few days. The name "Weekender" fits it perfectly.
lol @ semetrical police
I really enjoy your videos and would very much appreciate your take on the Fallkniven U2. Seems to be a knife that would fit nicely in your collection. Cheers
Just came across your videos when researching the quite carry IQ. Great videos, great detail, no nonsense and covers all the bases and doesn’t go so fast you can’t hear what’s being said , Thank you. It fun to watch the reviews of the knives I have and the ones I’m considering. Just for info on the Benchmade axis lock , the gritty will go away after some use, they actually get quite smooth. I also put a dab of oil on that area after break in. The other thing which may know already, considering this is two years old, is the axis is made to use with one side, you don’t have to , nor is it meant to pull back both sides to close the knife.
$200 for a Taiwan made small pocket folder should not have a rough screw edge ow hole. I’d send that back for a replacement knife the minute i tool it out of the box. Nice review, that’s the exact version I’m looking at. I was wondering how it really looked, if it was as classy as the smooth titanium.
Too much knife for some guys .
Lionsteel is putting out good products at a good price. The roundhead is my favorite pocket knife currently. Thanks for the video
Well made Mr. Fart.
Very informative and helpful review
Wait a few years when you mature and then you'll like it when you become a man
I like your vids. Please make more.
Would you consider a “most carried” video? Or some other compare/contrast video?
As a machinist myself, I also have the upmost respect for the machining tolerances of Chris Reeve knives. I don’t own one yet, but I will in the next few months. I’m getting one almost exactly like this one. Mine will have the insigno blade and the scales will be glass blasted instead of polished. Great job with your videos! I really enjoy them.
Love this video. Thanks for posting.
No collection is complete without a rat 2!
Great presentation! I'm the owner of the Falcon- and Eagle-Version of the Knife. The medium sized Falcon ist the best choice for me! The eagle ist a little too big! The chinese quality ist unfortunatly not so perfect as the old Seiki-City-Versions auf Al Mar knifes. May be it will be a little better in the future. And yes! The price is too high!!! Best regards from Oldenburg!/Germany! Joerg
