My first video post 6 days out of surgery for Radical Prostatectomy. To provide my personal timeline of events and my perspective on how the recovery is progressing. Surgery on February 15th, 2021
Butchery......NEVER!!!
Your progress is much better than mine. Three and a half weeks since my surgery. Still have near constant dripping. Using about 10 max size pads daily. I do keagles regularly.
Stick with the kegels bud… an friend dealt with that problem for some time but eventually got back to normal
There's a better way. There truly is.
What was your Gleason score? Mine is a 3+4 I'm supposed to go see the radiation Dr next week to go over my options..my Dad also passed away over twenty years from prostate cancer..so I'm leaning towards the surgery because he had done the seeds but it had spread..I am a little anxious about the surgery because I don't really have a great pain tolerance..
@@SteveMiller-yw7kv Mine was 3 + 4 as well. In my mind, for me, I did not want any cancer to have chances. I believe I had one choice. Discuss all options with your team. Recommend a second opinion from a urologist oncologist. Personally I’m anxious about any surgery.. I get it…. if you decide to go that route, I think you will be mostly dealing with discomfort. Science and healthcare have made incredible strides related to prostate cancer. You got this.
Thank you so much for this video!! 🙏🏼 I am happy for you! My husband also had his Prostate Cancer 4 months ago…
Kevin - Thank you for sharing your experiences. Your experience is similar to mine as I had a prostatectomy done more than 6 months ago. The Foley catheter is an over the top eye opener that most men will find uncomfortable but the timetable of 10 - 14 days of having it on is manageable. I unfortunately need follow-up Proton radiation therapy as my PSA numbers reflect some noise in that area and I'm working through those therapy sessions now. How did everything turn out for you? Steve
Hello how are you and whats your current psa ... And treatment
@@prashant8767 I am doing very good. PSA Below 0.05 (undetectable). I did have a recent scare as PSA data climbed in some bloodwork reading that was off, for whatever reason. Apparently it happens occasionally. Doctor ordered another bloodwork 4 weeks later and it came back undetectable.
@@kevinvitale8980 god bless you...
May I ask what's your first psa after surgery
@@prashant8767 undetectable (0.02)
Thank you for your strength
Thanks Kevin for sharing your experience and updates. After we noticed my PSA was rising during my last three physicals I decided to have a biopsy instead of waiting another year. The tests showed cancer in one side of my prostate. CT’s & a bone scan indicates the cancer is isolated to the prostate. I’m now waiting on a surgeon in Atlanta that my local urologist recommends. They said it might be three weeks before they call to set things up. Guess I’m a bit anxious to get started. Videos like yours are giving me real life examples of what is to come. Hearing from people who have been through this is very important to the ones preparing for the same thing and I truly appreciate your sharing.
@@alapahariveroutdoors thanks for kind words. You are doing the right things. I’m very impressed with science and health technology and has reduced my fears over time. Best of success on you getting rid of the cancer.
Hello Kevin do you mind sharing what your psa was after surgery and before radiation? Thanks
I believe after surgery PSA was 1.8, thus still some cancer in lymph nodes local to abdomen and some in the area where the prostate was. Radiation w/ hormone (Lupron) treatment was next steps and they brought PSA > 0.02 (undetectable). So Now it's a been a couple years later and my PSA has been undetectable until my past bloodwork 2 weeks ago with a PSA @ 0.8. Shocked me. My oncologist thinks it could be a false reading. Doing bloodwork in a month to re-evaluate.
@@kevinvitale8980 Hi , Thank you for the info. I also had prostatectomy and its been 10 months of being undetectable, although a couple of times Ive had a reading of 0.04, and back to undetectable. I dont know where you live but I would not wait a month to do a confirmatory test. PSA tests are maybe not extremely reliable but 0.8 is a large jump, if it is rising that quickly you can find yourself beyond 0.1 in a month, or maybe not. I would do a confirmatory test immediately, and if its same or higher get a jump on appointments for next step and not lose a month. This is just my experience Im not a doctor, I sincerely wish you Godspeed on this journey and this weird club we did not sign up to be members of. Cheers
PSA ubdetectable mean: 0.0 or 0.00 or 0.000?
@@alliaj1 doctors described it to me anything below 0.02 is considered the same as undetectable
Are you ok now? Whats yours psa at present
@@prashant8767 I have been real good … until this past week… I just had my quarterly bloodwork and this time it read differently. It went from Undetectable (>0.02) to 0.8, in 3 months. Again, another mind F…k. We will do another bloodwork in a month. Hoping for an anomaly.
I'm 2 weeks today. Get catheter out tomorrow. Can't wait to have nothing attached to me.😮
@@jimmyReesby How’d it go? Feeling better I hope.
Thanks for the video. Im 8 days post DaVinci Radical Prostatectomy. Was walking the next morning around hospital. Thanks to the pain killers. Was started on the regular diet and allowed to go home that evening. I'm walking in the backyard every couple hours for at leaat 10 minutes. Still sore but not nearly as much as 5 days ago. My elbows hurt like craxy until about Saturday. Catheter comes out on September 4. Recovery is going well. My prostate was the size of my fist so some reconstructive bladder surgery was needed. 9 hours in surgery. We'll see how I'm doing in another week. Catheter doesn't bother me, yet. 😊
@@jimmyReesby best off success to ya buddy. You can do this
Would you do it again? Would you do anything different?
@@joepasquarello1273 Because of my family history, my father passing from prostate cancer, my wife passing from breast cancer, both due to observational surveillance, my cancer prostate was coming out… I would definitely do it over. But I would do way more research and interview diligence, up front on my doctors and staff. Because of my work health coverage, I only looked at my hospital and their doctors to stay in the plan. While in St. Louis we had one of the top US cancer treatment facilities. My Surgeon and hospital had a ‘Standard Of Care’, which I found out was not the best. I still have E.D. and zero libido. In hindsight, I would have found the best surgeon cancer urologist and deal with working out of plan.
Thanks Kevin!
Do you need to take male hormones after this? Or are you comfortable as things are?
After radiation I was given a series of Lupron injections for 18 months. I handled it pretty well. I did get hot flashes… so weird. But the combo of the prostatectomy, radiation, and hormone treatment was all to my benefit.
Amazing how great you look and sound after only 6 days. Has me reconsidering surgery but will look into TULSA first to see if I am a good candidate. Hope all is still well with you as the video is a few years old now.

Right now it's 2024. If you get this comment can you please tell me how you're doing? Did you have any reoccurrence of your cancer? Hopefully you did not! Thank you.
Hi Rick… I’ve been contemplating an update video… guess I should. Thank you for asking. I am doing very well. No reoccurrence. After I found new doctors for my follow up treatments (radiation & hormone) to wipe out any lingering cancer cells, I am happy to say my qtly bloodwork shows PSA undetectable. With my new oncologist ( I retired and moved to Florida), I will continue my regiment of eating healthy, exercising 5 days a week, and general living life right.
Why radiation treatment if your cancer was contained in your prostate?
@@jimmyReesby cancer was found not only in the area where the prostate was, but also a few lymph nodes in the abdomen area.

Well, how’s it all going?
@@tabcobra Had a few rough days. Gas pains in the shoulders. It just slowly goes away. Stirs up when I move around. Constipation for 3 days, finally out of that. Abdominal pain was also an issue for 3-4 days. Quit the pain killers (none were Opoids) and that may have helped. I really hate the cathether, comes out in 48 hours. It is like a pet on a leash that you don't like. Have scrotum swelling and trying to control with ice packs. Jury is out, still swelling with black and blue color. Hopeing that when the tube comes out the real recovery begins. Coughing is difficult due to the 6 holes in my abdomen. I hold a pillow over it and press to allow for the pressure. Glad the cancer has been removed. Doc said he had to take a major nerve out due to lessions. I'll know more when I see the doctor in 9 days and the biopsy results are back. @@kevinvitale8980 I'm holding on. The incontenence and swelling are relentless. Seeing my doc today for my 15 day post op checkup and results of the biopsies. Wonder, how long did it take for the swelling to go away?

Before the operation procedure did they scan your entire body for other cancer? If not why not?
Other cancer? That doctor who did my surgery did not order a whole body scan. Just a pelvic and abdomen scan. I trusted his diagnosis and actions. Post surgery and follow up, I did not care for his or the hospital’s ‘standard of care’. I did find a new doctor and hospital.
Hello, I hope you are fully recovered and that everything is going well. They probably didn't scan your entire body because your Gleason score was between 6 and 7, but they are now at 8, 9 or 10, if they consider the PET scan. Blessings and I wish you the best.
I am sure the hormone treatments lower your PSA but does it really .... "Suppress" the cancer? I wonder. I am going to follow your recovery Kevin. I didn't start treatment yet. But listen to this Kevin. I am 70 years old and I pee at night at least five times! Slow stream. I wonder if the radiation will affect it in a very bad way. Any thoughts? I don't see another video posted. Am I right?
I highly recommend the RUclips channel Prostate Cancer Research Institute with Mark Scholz MD. The videos cover everything Prostate Cancer. I amazed how medical science is making great strides this particular cancer. While everyone is different, the institute provide a wealth of info. My radiation was designed with pinpoint accuracy. I had (2) lymph nodes outside the removed prostrate area. So I was radiated in just those affected areas with careful attention not to radiate organs around the area. This is one of the main reasons I found a new doctor. The original doctor/hospital had a ‘standard of care’ that they were going to want to treat like other cancers… just a blanket Radiation across the pelvic and abdomen. I did NOT feel confident with that treatment, things would go well. PS: I wake up 4-5 times a night to pee, because I drink a lot of fluids through out the day and evening. You got this.
@@kevinvitale8980Grateful to know you're doing well.

Thanks Kevin. Looks like I am going to take the same path you have taken in the coming months. Its a depressing thought but its probably for the best. I hope time is being kind to you. All the best
Are you sure you want to do that? I'm in the same predicament, but am considering Active Surveillance or another treatment other than surgery. What are your Gleason Levels and PSA? Mine are a 3+3=6 & 3+4=7 (only 5% of the 80% is the Gleason 4. PSA is now a 9.1, up from 7.4 four months ago.
@@KENNIEMI Unfortunately my Gleason's is 4 + 3 with the growth in my prostate going from 5 mm to 10 mm in around 7 months. PSA has gone from 5.7 to 8.7 in the same period. I have been sitting on this for 4 years with active surveillance so its been hanging around for a while. I would interested to know what the catalyst was for it to increase its aggressiveness. Cheers, nice to chat.
@@kieranoloughlin oh I see. With the non-favorable 4+3, I cannot blame you for getting it removed. Best of luck and prayers to you. I am doing well. It's May 2023 and I am done with hormone treatment. My PSA is undetectable. So from here on out I'm done with treatments. I have found a new Urologist since I have moved, primarily to watch over me for the rest of my life. I wish you well too. You can do this.
Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing your story. So if I can ask what was your Gleason score. I had prostatectomy in May, doing radiation in couple weeks. Because of a rising PSA though no evidence of cancer from my PMSA scan from couple weeks ago. Did you need radiation because of a elevated PSA? Anyway found your site from another post we both on. Thanks again for sharing.
My Gleason score was 7. After the blood test, then did the imaging. Most of my prostate had cancer, with no indications it was beyond that. That news combined with my dad passing because of prostate cancer years ago, it was clear to me to take care of it completely. So, new doctor, new imaging and found cancer in a couple of lymph nodes… and signs around where he prostate was. New Doctor placed gold markers in me to help pin point exactly during radiation. None of that blanket radiation stuff. So no, my PSA did drop back to 4, where the expectations was non-detectable. Thus we took the step of radiation AND hormone therapy.
@@kevinvitale8980 how. Are you now
@@vic9098 I’m doin good Vic. I took my last hormone shot back in November. I need to do some bloodwork to verify my PSA is still undetectable. I also moved to Florida and need to find a urologist oncologist to watch over me from here on out. Thanks for asking.
