I actually wouldn't recommend reading Magic Tree House out of order. While each of the books are completely understandable on their own, they also build on each other, so reading one that comes later will actually create spoilers for earlier books in the series.

This is a fantastic list!!! I also have an 8th grader and was so excited to add to our list. Just a note, To Kill A Mockingbird does deal with some heavy topics so do a bit of research before having her read it. We have it on our list, but we are waiting a year or 2 just for those topics :)

Wow, so many great choices! We did ancient history last year and many of those books we either read as read-alouds or my children read them independently. (They range in age from 4 years old to 15 currently.) I especially loved God King and Hittite Warrior although there are some violent scenes in Hittite warrior as well as The Golden Goblet. (Probably some others as well that I am not remembering.) Just something for parents to be aware of. Another book that my children really enjoyed was called Noah's Ark and the Mount Ararat Adventure by John Morris. It's an older book, but it prompted a lot of good discussions about what happened during and after the time of Noah's Flood. After we read it, I then tried to look up some more recent information from Answers in Genesis about what they think has happened to the ark. My little ones also kept acting out the book, pretending they were going on excursions to Mt Ararat.

I also love Pentime! This year I tried a different handwriting book with one of my children and used PenTime for a couple others. The other book is fine, but I can already see myself going back to PenTime next year for everybody. (Also a mom of 7 here. 🙂)

Men have indeed been put down. For a very, VERY long time. Depicted, as you said, as fat, dumb, lazy slobs and/or domineering. This is, unfortunately, by design. It manufacturers consent, so to speak, for the success of (extreme) feminism and, ultimately, the destruction of families, which leads to the destruction of us ALL. We've seen it in shows and movies for many decades, but nowadays it's just so blatantly in your face. Even in otherwise seemingly "wholesome" shows and movies we see this. I was looking at books the other day and found one that alluded to raising "boys to be men." It seemed interesting but upon closer inspection, holy moly! The author's (a man, by the way) idea of "men" is...scarily wimpy. (There are slang words that are more accurate than "wimpy" but I wanted to be nicer about it lol) Absolutely fantastic commentary from you, as always. Thank you! Oh, just so that I don't forget to mention it when I sit down to rewatch the Wife portion of this playlist...if you've not already seen it, MomDelights has a playlist going over Eve Reborn that I think might pique your interest 😊

Wanted to add something... Years ago, we were walking around a neighborhood near a local public school shortly after they had let out for the day. Apparently, playing "House" doesn't mean "Daddy" goes to work and "Mommy" stays home to cook and clean and take care of babies like it did when we were growing up. These young elementary-aged children had a much different version. These poor children were screaming at each other from across the street on their way to their respective homes about divorce court: judges, custody, child support, even restraining orders. And name-calling and foul language on top of all that. My heart *broke* having to listen to it. What's sadder still is that I've seen a lot of these kinds of things in Christians as well. I did grow up Christian but was surrounded by divorced being popularized as well as "love thy neighbor" equating to accepting and celebrating sin. It's all just so very sad 😢

  • @katie7748

I could not agree more about putting things into practice. Actions speak louder than words and, to quote another lovely lady I follow (over at The Commonplace), "Intellectual virtue is not supposed to stay in your mind. If it does, then it's not really virtue." My mother often said that she did not have many books growing up and that she wanted us to have plenty of access to books, which we did. We went to the library a lot and had multiple family bookshelves. I loved to read more than anyone else, so I also had my own fairly large collection of books in my room. Once old enough, I'd spend my days walking or biking to the library and bringing home a backpack absolutely stuffed with books to devour. HOWEVER, our mother did not read to us. I don't remember her reading to me nor do I remember her ever reading to my younger siblings. Our gramma, on the other hand, did. Often. In fact, when she passed away, the only thing I wanted when my aunt asked me if I wanted anything, was the granny square blanket she kept draped over the chair she read to us in. My fondest memories include sitting on her lap being read to. I have always read to my children, including doing voices and accents. We have thousands (literally *thousands*) of books. Some were inherited, others were gifts, but most of them were acquired secondhand. It's taken us YEARS to accumulate them and we are constantly adding to it. Everyone likes being read to, from infancy to 100+. Even my OTR trucker husband likes being included when I read to our children before bed (either on speakerphone or in person during home time). Or, if he's too busy, I'll reread the chapter to him later. He gets such a kick out of it. What a great chapter! PS- Those earrings are super cute. I love the way they beautifully contrast (but also match, if that makes sense lol) with your hair and the background.

I have noticed that as well about a lot of things, as far as THOSE types being interested in it, including pets and travel, but especially with creative things. Art in general, drama/musicals, even something as "mundane" as sewing. It grinds my gears trying to educate myself on historical fashion or crocheting or what have you and seeing people who either support or are part of the AlphabetMafia. I don't want to learn from people whose beliefs severely contradict my own. What's really bothersome is when they don't actually support it, they just pretend to because their viewers or readers do. They sell out. Some have accused me of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I don't see it that way. There are so many other people to learn from, so I can be picky. And it's funny how they get annoyed that people like us are "infiltrating" and "taking over" these things. Um, what?! LOL It's also so odd to me when these types of people (usually women) want to dress like Susie Homemaker yet rant about the supposed pAtRiArChY. They get so angry when people (suppoooooosedly) assume they must surely be (I LOATHE this slang!) "tradwives." That would be like if I shaved half my head, dyed the other half green, and tattooed and pierced the crap out of myself, then get mad when people assume I am some sort of THAT person. These people are cuckoo bananas. They are misguided and lost. They desperately need Jesus.

I know it's the wrong time of year (LOL), but I'm somewhat curious if you actually read the Nutcracker book that was shown in this video, because it appears to be an abridged version of the original novel, and the original novel has some problematic elements during the "flashback sequence" (to the point that I spent years hoping that my Mom would never read it herself, and whenever I read it out loud I bowdlerized it).

We're Charlotte Mason homeschoolers too but I've been wondering if we should take a more relaxed, unschooling approach. For me, it was such a release. Like a breath of fresh air away from the world’s constant ideas about what learning is versus what it truly could be. I think it’s a huge investment as it gives you so much reassurance that we don’t have to structure our homeschools after the traditional school systems we all know. I think it’s definitely worth buying to reference throughout your educational years with your children.

Hint: gross "adult" stuff (think inn. Sesst. And peh. Duh. Feel. Ya.) 🤢🤢🤢🤮 Yes, really.

Whaaaat?! Definitely looking in to that. I’ve researched a lot on it but hadn’t seen that that term. Interesting. Thanks for the tip for OnMission!

Hello, I’m asking for a friend who’s recently become a Christian parent struggling with this issue. They’re super young and need advice and I’m not sure what to do. I forget to mention my friend and they felt unsure if I should ask about it. But they’re in turmoil over it as they grew up believing lgbtq is ok. If u don’t mind me asking for my friend. What might happen if your kid identified as someone Lgbtq? What would u do in that situation? I understand this very personal.

I’m sorry I missed responding to you recently. I meant to and forgot. I would simply point them to the Bible. There are many passages which explain that God made male and female and they are a partnership and meant to procreate. Nowhere do we see positive examples of same sex relationships in the Bible. Not only that, but ultimately God did NOT make a mistake when creating people. He is literally incapable of making mistakes. Society (Satan) often tries to lie to us and encourage us to believe that same sex couples are ok, but we are simply being led to believe lies. Satan is very good at that. I, too, was raised go believe LGBTQ was right and it was simply through reading and studying the Bible and through much prayer that I was able to see the truth. The Bible says to pray for wisdom and God will reveal it to you. Perhaps through the Holy Spirit or perhaps through another person or some other way. I will pray for your friend and for you to be able to help them.

Just curious have you compared the Birds Simple Study with the Simply Charlotte Mason bird study? I'd love to do one of those in the future and would love to know how they differ. It looks like they both use the Burgess bird book.
