The Peak District - Dove Dale & Thorpe Cloud Easy Walk

Thorpe Cloud is an isolated limestone hill (a reef knoll) lying between the villages of Thorpe and Ilam on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border at the southern end of Dovedale. The valley was cut by the River Dove and runs for just over 3 miles (5 km) between Milldale in the north and a wooded ravine near Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill in the south. In the woo...

i stayed at Rowter Farm Campsite earlier this year, very pleasant quiet site, amenities are sparse, but toileys and showers in good condition and were very clean, price was very good also basically £10 per night per person for a medium (4 man) tent, the site was v windy when we were there and the cows noisy but is was propr nice small rural site and well worth a stay. Only caviat is the owner told us it was a 15 minute walk into Castleton, it is not its at best 30 minutes, so Pennys taxis were required to get us back after a few pints.

How much has changed since I was a boy in Woodhouse Mill back in the 1950s! I Kew the Rother well, north of the sluice gate and the weirs it replaced. Many a happy evening was spent by the river Bank watching the trains along the Midland Old Road which ran parallel to the river past Woodhouse Mill rec, before both passed through the complex of collieries between Orgreave and Treeton. The brick viaduct shown towards the end carries the line from Sheffield to Retford across the marshes and was a favourite destination for this 12 year old and his bike, 60 years ago.
