Merrybower Homestead - A Tiny Derbyshire Smallholding
Добавлен 24 июн 2014
Life on a tiny Derbyshire smallholding. After struggling to find certain videos on subjects we're interested in, or pieces of kit we use, we've decided to upload the ocassional video that might plug a gap for someone trying to live a similar life.
Splitting the Bee Hive
David - The Bee Farmer - looks over the hive and decides to split it. The good news is that the bees seem to be finding enough forage to fill the frames!

Grandpa's Feeder
Просмотров 5 тыс.7 лет назад
When one of our imported treadle feeders decided to throw out more poultry food than it kept in, we decided to buy a Grandpa's Feeder, based on multiple good reviews. As an industrial designer by trade, I'm quite picky about what we buy - my ethos is "Buy well, buy once" - I hate waste, both materially and monetarily. And plastic, whilst it's great and versatile, also has a comparatively short ...
Hay Cutting 2016
Просмотров 27 тыс.8 лет назад
Another year, another small batch of hay to make with our old Fort Cri-Cri Super two-wheel tractor and a 1.2m cutter bar attachment. It's not fast, but it's not hard work either, so we're not complaining! I realise it's not the most exciting video in the history of RUclips, but when we were looking for a piece of machinery to cut a quarter acre of hay, I would have loved to know there was somet...
Light Sussex Chicks - 1 week old
Просмотров 2008 лет назад
At one week old, our Light Sussex chicks are upgraded from towels to quality pine shavings. Using shavings before this can lead to them eating pine shavings and choking to death, but now they're pretty sure what their food looks like! Never use plain newspaper as they can develop 'spraddle legs', through lack of traction.
Spraying Gooseberry Sawfly with Nematodes

A very short video of the damage Gooseberry Sawfly larvae can do in three days. The best treatment we've found is Nematodes, three applications spaced a week apart and it cures them for us. Totally organic and safe.
Plastic Bin Baler
Просмотров 474 тыс.9 лет назад
If you can't afford a mini baler, don't have enough land to warrant getting one, or can't find anyone willing to come and do a small hay field for you, you can always resort to this plastic bin baling method. With someone piling the hay next to you, it's possible to get it down to 5 minutes per bale. For the record, we made 68 bales from the quarter acre - a mix of rye grass, timothy grass and ...
Cider Fermentation - Strange Growth
Просмотров 1759 лет назад
What's the weird growth!? Started this on 9th September last year and it started fermenting quite quickly, then slowed to a stop over winter (in an outdoor building). Spring arrives and it starts up again - it's currently inside in around 18 degrees Celsius. The last week I've noticed a weird growth at the top - wonder what it is?!
Pruned Apple & Pear Trees - 4 Years Old

A quick look at the shapes we've nurtured over the first four years of formative pruning of selected apple and pear trees in our little (bush) orchard.

Time-Lapse Omlet Cube Build
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.10 лет назад
Just to show that one person can build an Omlet Eglu Cube, here's a time-lapse video. Have to say, cracking bits of kit, and we've used a lot of different coops over the years. Ah - and thought the video's only around two and a half minutes, I edited out the other two and a half minutes which showed me gassing and drinking copious amounts of tea.
Fort Cri-Cri Super 2-wheel Tractor with Cutter Bar attachment
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.10 лет назад
I'm using our new cutter bar attachment bought from Rapid Tractors, based in Tutbury, Staffordshire. Our Fort Cri-Cri Super is the 1998 equivalent of the modern Fort S280. At 16 years old it's still solid, although having bought it last year it took some work to remove and oil the rotavator attachment which hadn't budged in 16 years of previous use! Likewise for the handlebar rotation head, whi...

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁
😂😂😂 Nice!
Thank u so much this is what we call to think outside the box
You do realize that these Grandpa feeders are imported from China along with the knock off versions that sell for half the price?
I'm aware from websites that they are now made in China, but in no way has that detracted from the fact that I was so impressed by it I've bought another four, albeit the smaller ones. In an ideal world I would have bought a well-made feeder, ideal for our needs, from closer to home, but alas there was no such thing at the time. I sincerely hope this changes, but for us at the time it was the one to get.
Very similar to how I bailed my silage. I like it.
Great minds think alike 😁
Excelente, gracias cada día aprendo más
De nada 😁👍
У хорошего хозяина все хорошо.
Brilliant!
Simple, effective, efficient and relatively quick and mostg importnant you can do it alone. I'm impressed.
Thanks! I did cheat and got my wife to rake it up for the video, but yes, it's a one-person show!
What a great idea, thank you for sharing 😊
thank you so much for this video. the knotched stick was great idea. God bless
That is very clever! If anyone where they live, can just add another bin from their respective refuse company for a short period, that will save a lot of the upfront cost of having to buy a bin.

Simply yet effective. Worth sharing thanks a lot.
I'm all for private individuals doing this for their enjoyment and purposes, but there needs to be a better way. That was a fair bit of time for one loosely packed bale.
Not really sure what point you're trying to make. It's pretty obvious I'm a private individual. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but using this method I was able to finish a bale every 9 minutes, without the time spent talking to the camera. By hand, no machinery to buy or maintain. This technique is actually derived from the pine straw hand baling method, which has been used for years. Find me a better way to bale on this small scale, I'm all ears.
Bravo ottimo lavoro 👍👍👍
I now live in a city and miss hearing this sound every morning. I wonder why they make that specific sound only in the morning though.
You use straw or timothy grass?
It's a rye grass/ timothy grass mix with white clover as a nitrogen fixer.
l'ho provato, è perfetto. E' il metodo più semplice ed efficace che abbia trovato. Grazie a chi ha caricato questo video!
Grazie! Prego :)
Very clever will use this method..
Bravo monsieur et merci pour l'idée .

ขอบคุณที่แบ่งปันความรู้มากๆค่ะ
very cool
Very good
fantastic!
That might be the best home made Baler I have seen:)
Thank you very much for the compliment!
Pretty neat! Great Idea! Wonder how u'd make out lining the barrel with a drop in heavy duty Garbage bag or 2? Just pack it full using ur ladder packing method or a weighted piece of plywood cut out in a square or circle depending on the shape of the barrel with a makeshift handle on it for insertion and extraction in and out of the barrel.. Pack it using that, so there's no to risk falling off the ladder or etc,.. Gather the top of the bag/ tie it off using twist ties or etc then just pull the bag out/might have to anchor the barrel to the ground. Wallah! Now u have a packaged waterproof bagged bale that u can bring in the barn as required. Bale is self contained in bag. Just lay it on its side. No worries about getting wet from rain or snow. If u have limited storage room u could leave them outdoors. Maybe under a weighted or anchored tarp for extra protection. U could use that method to make haylage or even silage if u have a wood chipper or some other chopping method.
Nice ideas! We're lucky we have enough space for what we need, but I can imagine leaving a few out for easy access could be useful!
Very clever! I am impressed and will be using this on my property. Thank you.
Good luck Pamela!
I grew up on my dad's dairy farm . Your bales look pretty nice without an actual hay baler . We have no tractor or mower . Can the hay be cut by hand or a durable grass mower ? . We are in a hot climate with a long growing season and very little rain so we definitely have time for old fashion muscle and leisure
Hey there! You could certainly scythe it if you wanted to do it all by hand. I imagine the stalks need to be quite tall to bind together, so mowing might make them too short to work properly. We don't have a 'proper' tractor either, but we did pick up this two wheeled tractor which has a cutter bar attachment: ruclips.net/video/a22ip4GbzSo/видео.html Good luck!
Didn't know such a machine existed, but it makes GREAT sense. It travels a bit faster than a scythe so makes great sense for smaller acreage. Also, as small annoying petrol motors go, this is by far the best sounding one I've ever heard! It's actually not unpleasant!! Anyway, sincere salutations to you for intelligently using the land you have in the way you are doing things. In such an ignorant, feckless World with such a disposable, dismissive attitude, I love to see others utilizing what they have in such intelligent fashion. Slán from Ireland. 😀👍
Thanksfor the comment! Aye, I know summer's here when I fire her up (though she gets put to use with the rotovator attachment earlier than that). I did wonder if we could make a contraption to attach to the PTO at the front that would turn the hay but that seems a little bit too dangerous, so by hand it is for that part :D Cheers!!
THE BEST methods and technique of hand-hay bailing that I've seen!! Well done, great little simple smart process! Thank you 😌
Lol, this is the best way 😃 thank you sir 👌🏼
You're welcome!
Mate... genius. Just bought two acres and wonder what I’m going to do this Kiwi s umber with all that fodder. Now I have feed for winter
Nice one :D
