THE CANDID BOOK CLUB FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS | 07.09.24
In September 2024, we hosted our inaugural Candid Book Club Festival in collaboration with Waterstones at Foyles Charing Cross Road. It was absolutely fantastic, with 5 sessions across the day and almost 1000 attendees with a record number of books sold!
The festival wouldn’t have been what it was without our incredible authors (and publishers) who came from far and wide to participate in the most wholesome and memorable day.
Our first session of the day was a classic book club with Wiz Wharton discussing all things her debut novel, GHOST GIRL, BANANA!
Our second session was our debut fiction panel chaired by the wonderful Poorna Bell in discussion with Shani Akilah, Wiz Wharton, Zoulfa K...

Finally read this based on your reccomendation :) it was great
@@Emma1231 so glad you enjoyed it!!!
Wonderful!

I'm more jealous watching this. It's awesome, well done ladies. So well thought out 👌🏾

very well organised, well done guys!
@@ShirleyMikhiel-j2b thank you!
What a day ❤
The best ❤
Such a good event!! Looking forward to next years one!!! ❤
Thank you so much for coming!!! ❤
Nice discussion - weirdest books I read over the last couple years were weird and gross - Earthlings by Sayaka Murata (was grossed out by the end), weird and wonderful - Nona the Ninth by Tasmyn Muir (sci fi which must have been written on psychedelic drugs with the warmest and best hearted protagonist), weird and awful and excrutiatingly BORING - The Star Touched Queen by Roshan Chokski (so wanted to like this, it was terribly disappointing and the weird was pedestrian), weird and innovative - Fifteen Dogs by Andre Alexis (excellent, mind-bending fiction, set in familiar Toronto neighbourhooods and meditating with great sweep on what if the gods made a bet and 15 dogs became intelligent in a human sense)
Thank you for such a comprehensive list of weird books 😂😂 defo going to look into them 😊
Lool
@@User64782 😂😂😂
The weirdest book that I have read is Piranesi by Susanna Clarke . So odd . 😂
@@Emma1231 oooh not one we’ve read - will look into it 😂😂
@@thecandidbookclub Piranesi is weird and brilliant
Love thiss!! 😂
@@Shaninxq haha thank you for watching! 📚😅
Loved this so much
Open Water was amazing, then i read Small Worlds...amazing-er!
So glad you enjoyed them both! ❤
I feel the same about The Vanishing Half but don't think it was that bad🫣 Brit Bennett is an incredible writer but I wasn't interested nor remember most of the story even now.
Yes! If you've not read The Mothers, please get to it soon - it's so good by comparison! But as for The Vanishing Half it's worth reading Passing by Nella Larsen :)
I thought "Such a Fun Age" was so MEH and then after seeing your review of "Come and Get It", I knew I couldn't waste another moment being curious about her second book. I have both Coco Mellors books in my TBR and I am excited to read them one day soon (ish). I think it was her third book, so maybe not relevant here but for me the most disappointing follow-up to a book that received critical acclaim was "You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty" by Akwaeke Emezi. "The Death of Vivek Oji" was such a stunning, profound book and then YMAFODWYB was so meandering and tedious by comparison. I couldn't believe they were written by the same person!
You're right not to waste another moment thinking about Come and Get It! Hahaha re Emezi - we actually really enjoyed the messiness of YMAFOD but totally appreciate it wasn't as good as previous work!
Loved this! So fun
Thanks so much for watching!
I picked this up at the library after hearing about it on your channel. I loved it! A lot of themes all woven together well and different levels to them. And I loved her Dad too! Thx for recommending as based on the cover and blurb not sure I would have picked it up.
Fantastic discussion as always. I’ve read the book and agree with all your thoughts. Ela did great with this book, the title, the slap (lol) and the whole identity of children of immigrants/mixed race kids 👏🏽
@@yasmin3530 thanks so much for your feedback and for tuning in. You’re right - It’s such a page turner with so many themes and all of them so well done!
I loved Jades Dad!

I agree with Linda! I can’t do books in the bath! I get bored and the water gets cold way too quick lol
Haha yes! It’s just not practical for me!
Welcome to Booktube! Really looking forward to seeing more videos from the five of you 😊
Thanks so much!!
Now all of a sudden my TBR list is interesting again, thank you 🤗🤭.
Yayy enjoy!!
I totally agree!!! A Mouth Full of Salt is exceptionally well-written and definitely worth reading!
So so good! I hope more people read it 🤞🤞
I love Linda’s recommendations, too! Great video.
Thank you so much!!
Omg! I am so jealous that you’ve got an ARC of Little Rot. I love Emezi’s writing. Ahh Butter was one I was excited about, but I’ve heard very mixed reviews of it. I’ve heard mixed reviews of Come And Get It too. I have it, but have sort of put it at the end of my TBR. Nightbloom was my favorite of the women’s prize Longlist! So good. Adding a handful of these recs to my TBR. These Letters End In Tears sounds fantastic! A Trace of Sun is really good! It is definitely not a beach read though. I read it for the women’s prize Longlist. I just got a copy of The Great Divide! Great video!
Thanks so much for your feedback! I’m looking forward to getting your thoughts on Butter if you get round to it 🧈🧈
Hey ladies! A belated welcome to Booktube! I’m so sad that I’ve only just found your channel now. Subscribing this instant and consider me a new fan! You all have such good chemistry between you. I immediately felt like I was at brunch with my group of girlfriends! Reading diversely is a big focus on my channel, so I’m thrilled to see this is a focus for you all as well. :) I’m excited to go check out some of your other videos as soon as I finish this one. I love reading in the bath! This is my go to place to decompress. A hot bath and book after a day of work is perfect. Listening to what you like to read, I’ve got quite a bit of crossover with each of you! Babel is dark academia. It’s solid. I like that it flips a lot of the typical dark academia tropes. Subscribed and looking for more of your videos soon!
Thank you so much for your kind words and we're so happy to have you on board. We definitely need to read Babel - it is definitely time and we haven't heard anyone say a bad word about it!!
Love your candor and humour! Watching you from Cape Town, South Africa and looking forward to more bookish chats 😀
Thanks so much for tuning in! And yes plenty more candour and humour from us :)
This was awesome, i enjoy watching y'all 🥰
Thank you amyn!
Are you taking applications for a 6th😭😍😭
My anxiety wouldn't let me read in the bath. I would imagine all the worst scenarios coming to life
@@amynbawaallah Consider yourself an honourary member :) ahha yes reading in the bath is an absolute risk!
I really admire what you are doing and bringing it to the Booktube community! I love that there is another multi-person Booktube channel joining this community, for we have been active for 10 years and it is challenging to get everyone together, but it is achievable. When we film content with multiple people, we will often film multiple videos in one day and then release them accordingly when they are edited. I think the five of you have a great chemistry and I believe there are no boundaries amongst you. I also agree that it is perfectly okay to be able to disagree with someone and debate your side and everything is still okay. We are seeing a great sense of strain because people are having difficulty doing that. It is also great that amongst you, you enjoy reading a wide array of genres. You should not have to force yourself to read fantasy if you do not want to do so. Read what you want to read. You stick out by being yourself. Babel was a nominee for one of our Roundtable Reads on our channel, but it lost out to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. This was one of the best introduction videos I have ever watched, and I am very excited to watch more of your videos! -Josh
Josh, Thanks so much for reaching out, for the kind feedback and congratulations on 10 years! Totally agree - if we can't disagree and express our opinions then what is the point!?
It's my pleasure! Thank you for the kind wishes for our channel as well! It is an amazing thing when we can disagree in a civil way and in a way that provides an opportunity to learn something new as well. It is also amazing to hear differing opinions and hear each individual argument.
@@LiteraryGladiators most definitely!

Thanks so much for watching and we're so glad to be here!
About the bathtub reading discussion: I have a feeling that this is much more of a Booktube than Bookstagram thing to do, so no wonder it took you the Booktube Newbie Tag to discuss it. :) Glad you did this, and yes the dynamics of the group discussion are great and unique. I also appreciate the fact that you are 5 adults, which is also rare (or not as successful on Booktube). But also, the quality and editing of the videos thus far is top notch so keep it up.
Thanks for tuning in and for the kind feedback! The bathtub reading discussion was definitely not planned, but I am glad we got to share our impromptu thoughts with everyone!
