I lived in Bangkok for one year and used to visit the weekend market often, but never had a saltwater tank at that time, back in 2006.

i would not recommend this practice especially for new reef hobbyist. i can say that a majority of new hobbyists will feel defeated when they come across all these problems. doing it fast can lead to a lot of challenges. just as you did with the elegance. i recommend everyone new to the hobby to do as much reading, watching and asking before getting into it. this hobby can become very expensive when the new reef hobbyist keeps losing corals and fish.

Another tip to cycle water quickly is to add live rock or live sand from another established reef aquarium. The bacteria will proliferate quickly and also help cycle the aquarium quickly. I would still wait one or two weeks before adding livestock, it's not that long, instead add a little fresh sea food, mussel meat etc. That and the bacteria will cycle very quickly, around 2 weeks. It's not that long before we can add livestock.

I tend to disagree. Why not wait while you know that ammonia is toxic for fish, even if they are categorised as 'resistant', there is no need to make them suffer...It's just a selfish behavior to want to start right away, you end up killing animals like in your case. Also Elegance corals are mostly found in the sandbed and require low to moderate light, not sure why it was at the very top, it was probably burnt.
