How Good Does Your Writing Have To Be, Before You Share It With Us?
I can be a bit of a writing nerd on occasions, so I tend to use my own definition of a Flash Fiction. :'D It's basically that is at least 100 words long (Anything less would classify as a Micro Fiction), but less than 1,000 words (1,000 is where the Short Story range begins.)
Thank you for this explanation about word count. I’ve never heard it explained before. I’m writing a short story with a Christmas theme I plan to publish next month.
Love this
Thank You!
Thank you. All those myths away. We're 'weird' enough if we express our creative impulse! Bravo!!
Thank you very much Julie for your kind, soul lifting and inspiring words. Keep doing more!
Hi Julie, thank you for sharing such a wonderfully uplifting message. You have a beautiful spirit.
Such a great video! I love your thoughts and encouragement here. ❤
Love this
Nice.
Thx

Where did these Rules or Standardisation come from?
Common practice over the past 100 years or so. There’s always some flux, too…
Because I live in the USA
Hi, why is everything in dollars?
Wow great video and description of flash fiction!
Thanks!! I run workshops so I’ve had to think long and hard about how to explain it in a flash… (sorry)
@@StoryADay pun 🤌
I learned a new word today, 'ephemeral' - love it!! I am addicted to folders as well, order is important so you aren't constantly looking for things.
Im a fan of words;) I find it hard to wrangle my attention enough to be organized (my brain has usually moved on to the next task) but I am SO grateful to Past-Julie when she does put things away!
Thank you.
story of my life, thanks
In my free time I’m watching videos about how to manage my free time
Thanks for this timely message! I'm going to set aside time to write tonight!
I go to the library - it helps
Sometimes getting out of the house is the only way…
Wonderful! Great to have it fleshed out. I've heard many writers talk about this. Mostly as advice for Pantsers. I've wanted to try it but wasn't sure about the practical bits. Thx!
So glad it was helpful.
That was very good information. I'm off to write a short story. I'm back; that didn't take long. What's next? I'll make a cuppa tea while I wait. Where's the scones with strawberry jam and cream? You what?
Ah, but is it cream first or jam first? (And obviously it's jam first. We're not savages...)

Do you have past year's prompts archived? Are they available in full? Thank you for all you do! I'm looking forward to participating this year. 🤞
Yes, for now. You can also find ebook versions here storyaday.org/shop/
There is nothing wrong writing short stories but short format doesn't mean easy. I would use Drabble to describe character thought/introspection or as a training form. Good thing this allow you to write the essential. I hate that some Drabble, those which act like ideas, could be extended into novels.
Definitely not easier (or faster). I also don’t really think it’s a “training form” I love 100 word stories for themselves (you should check out 100wordstory.org/). While they may suggest ideas you can explore in a novel (or moments to bring into a novel) letting them be just what they are is a gift to yourself and your readers.
@@StoryADay I agree about "training form". Restraining words harm the story. A story is as along as it needed. Maybe a story end up as a Drabble or a one-shot. Content is what matter.
Thank you for this. You are spot on about the situation I'm in. You gave me motivation and inspiration. Cheers
I have just come up with a shortest story: a person walks up a mountain to find happiness, only to realize that it was where he started.
It’s a great premise, but I feel like the actual story is missing: how does he come to that realization? That’s the fun part!
💥Perfect recommendation by YT on how to look at my current problem. This 'mixing-it-up' inspires me to integrate a few outside scope ideas/views into the rigid construction of a past event. I intend mix-up the parts of this otherwise chronological story as it pleases me to witness the whole story folding in on itself near the end. I'm also considering trying out mind mapping the main event of this short story to see how that can benefit the writing. All in all a nice youtube recommendation as I was thinking to talk to someone on how to creating a unique written narrative. Thank you Julie 💫
Me: going to make a flash fiction in English while my English is my 4th language and im very bad in grammar :(
4th language?
Great voice. Great analysis.
Super helpful!
This was so helpful thank you
Hi Julie, enjoyed this video and signed up for the 5-day challenge. However, when I confirmed my email, it went to a broken link. FYI...
Love her! 🙋♥️
Very helpful thank you
I have written hundreds of short stories and have not published one.
Do you want to? (It's ok if you are just doing it because you love it)
@@StoryADay Yes, I do want to publish them at some point. I keep writing and writing and I never know when to wrap it up. I'm narrating a few stories for my RUclips channel too. My concern is that my stories are not completely fiction. There might be a few missing details that skew the moral lessons I learned from life's challenges. And that is my concern. I have a very good memory with details that might be incriminating to some and inspiring to others who may not wish to have their name left out of the story.
@@StoryADay I thought about changing the names but I wanted to keep the names of people who died since it's a credit to their memory. That is my biggest concern. I don't want to make a few unknown relations the object of public interest without their consent. And my last problem is deciding which celebrity names to include and which to change. I used to work in a field where I encountered people from all walks of life. Most of the people who are my finest characters are forgotten people who significantly impacted my life in forming and strengthening my character. One of my stories involves a Nun with a heart of gold. By coincidence, I brought her name up on the exact day of her funeral. I had not seen her for 40 years, and just like magic, I thought of her during her "wake". I was thinking of a meeting in her office with Craig and his mother and my father. I "woke" up and copied the evidence on Facebook in a private chat with my catholic classmate. And used it as proof to wake up a few more Catholics.
Same here I'm ready to get them out there are you
This was some solid advice! I'm also stuck on the boring stuff that will lead to the interesting scene.
I like to think that I've written a few pieces of good flash fiction however they are probably just really short stories. IMO, to write effective flash, there must be something poetic about the story/prose.
Agree. There ought to be something that makes it “flash”!
I love reading (and now writing) short stories. This concept sounds like a phenomenal alternative to NanoWriMo for those of use obsessed with the short form.
Family events ... :-) Can't wait!
@5:42, yes especially if the publishing industry refuses and or neglects to accept/publish works from a given culture. That does then become the voice of that given culture so that people from that culture might break through the glass wall. I also feel that anyone can write anything about anything, folks who look at the details of the author and decide to discriminate against their works due to whatever label they put on the author are the bullies themselves. Sadly too many people have caved to the Politically Correct bullies.
By “politically correct bullies” you mean: “people who think we should include voices-other-than-mine”?
@@StoryADay sort of. I would rather word it like "the people who are oversensitive that scream at everyone else that everyone else is wrong". I'm not saying they don't have an opinion, but they certainly do not have a right to hurt others financially or physically just cause their feelings are hurt.
I have to strongly disagree. Everybody likes a good story, no matter the skin color of the author. Nobody is "stealing" from an "under represented" diversity group. If someone writes a good story, it's gonna get seen, especially these days with Indie publishing! And you're wrong again about DEI being good for the bottom line. Look at what's happening to Hollywood, Disney, and the airlines!
Thanks for this.
Thanks
Thanks
thanks well understood !
Hi
Love ittt, finally explained simply without all this extra "should you do it or not" stuff. Since I am writing a zero draft I just wanted to know a bit more about it. Thanks!
