Rebuilt Thomas orchestra bells test one, Katjusha
Просмотров 12919 часов назад
I picked up the old Thomas Organ Company bells attachment, planning to just throw in a MIDI controller and have it playing by Christmas! But, when I got the thing the case was in real sorry shape. I decided to build a new box for it, then thought, hey I could use this as a glockenspiel for my Topsy organ! I arranged the bars the way the pipes are arranged, and I made it as wide as the organ's c...

So I decided to separate the glockenspiel and the drums from the rest of the organ, and it's configured to run from the midi-through of the organ or independently. It's on wheels! I'm using the frame of a jogging stroller. The bass drum fits comfortably between the rails, but I'll strap it in place so this thing stays functional when pushed over rough terrain. It's still on the original Topsy 3...

Continuing work on my street organ. This is based off of the Topsy 3 design by John Smith, www.johnsmithbusker.co.uk/ I have it fully functional now! Of course it's a bit rough, but next step is to disassemble it so we can complete and decorate the case. I'll fix tuning, voicing, and slow notes problems while re-assembling it.

This is for the home made organ. After much trial and error I gave up on the air-driven design and cobbled this together from salvaged parts. Those are dampers from a decommissioned upright piano!

Needs some tuning and voicing on those pipes
I'm working on it!
Wow this is a great instrument. Best automatic drums I’ve ever heard.
Hi! I'm the person you bought this from on eBay. This is SO COOL and I'm so glad it went into the hands of someone who will enjoy it! :)
I was kinda hoping there was no sentimental attachment to keeping the instrument all original!
Cool and thanks. Is the mechanical noise from the keyboard or the solenoids?
The clunk you hear on every note is the solenoids. It's a simple design -- the steel pins ride freely in the solenoid coils and drop by gravity when the note is released. Originally there was a strip of felt underneath that dampened the blow. Of course, I was clever (not clever) and used leather instead, so they're a bit louder. I might stuff a tiny piece of cotton into the coil tubes.
@@rimbeauxare you using the Chinese solenoids? If so, I can send you some pictures on how I dampened the sound of the solenoid down
@@rhodesami no, it had solenoids built into it already. I posted a test #2 after making some adjustments, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Where do you get the MIDI files ?
Sometimes I search for the song names + midi online, but beware of malicious links! There's a few songs I'm working on transcribing by ear, like the "Thunder" version I posted. Other times I get songs from musescore.com. The best music is arranged specifically for this instrument, and you can get it from street organ arrangers like Mel Wright: www.melright.com/busker/
@@rimbeaux Are any of those MIDI files made from old rolls or books?
It’s all good fun !
Very cool!
As a fellow maker of weird and sometimes wonderful things: WOW This is amazing As a musician: Is it just me, or are all the pipes slightly out of tune?
@@MrTada98 it's not you. It's me! Yes, there's a bunch of wonky tuning and voicing happening here. Those metal pipes are the worst offenders, however, I have disassembled this thing and am going through tuning and voicing stuff as I rebuild it. I was just so happy to have it working and making music that I wanted to share it with the world!
I would love to own one of these but cannot find the time (yet) to build one. Please contact me if it may ever become available for sale.
I saw your video description. I have recently put together some mosfet circuits on a breadboard if there's anything that you need to know. I want them for similar purposes because I am controlling solenoids with an Arduino. In addition to connecting a single mosfet to an Arduino output, I have also succeeded in getting mosfets working with a shift register to increase the number of outputs. I really enjoy your videos.
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Congratulations on your instrument. It sounds very good!
So funny !
Great work! I am looking to purchase one of these due to lack of time and knowledge to build one myself. Any ideas?
How long did it take you to build your homemade organ ? Good sound and it is cute. :D
I had an idea and started working on it early 2022. I wasn't getting the results I wanted, so I searched around and found the John Smith busker organ site and bought plans in November 2022. So, I've been working on this machine for almost two years.
Is this MIDI, Paper Roll or book?
@@ChinaAl it's midi. I think punched music is amazing, but I just didn't want to spend the time and energy going down that path. Midi is going to be a lot more versatile. If you look at some of my newer videos, you'll see I added a glockenspiel, and it's electromechanical. I'm looking forward to building other electromechanical instruments that can just plug in through midi cables..
@@rimbeaux Cool My own Alan Pell Harmonette was converted to MIDI. But it was originally a cartridge organ.
Nailed it! Lovely!
I love music machines like this
This is so awesome!!
I have this song on my busker organ. This sounds great here!
Neat calliope! I really liked the part that is around 1:30.
Super cool!!
This is delightful
yeah, it's dark. I was excited about getting this much working, so I didn't deal with the lighting. Also, yeah, portrait orientation. I hate that. But, the thing is tall and narrow and I'd rather shoot it this way than show you all my messy garage.
Wow, this is impressive. I’m looking forward to your finished project. The drum roll s awesome!
@@podenco2 I got the machine fully functional and posted a few more videos including the glockenspiel. Now that it's all functional, I totally took it apart so I can finish it and tie up the wonky bits.
Yes nice roll
Electricity is better than air anyway.
Thanks for; introducing me to your project, it's great!.
I would love to see a video on how it works
Me too! That's a great suggestion. I wasn't sure anybody would be interested
Awesomer and awesomer!
Please ignore the awfully messy garage!
No.
I'm going to look Right At It.
Would be perfect accompaniment for Edith from Allo, Allo... Nice change to hear this song on-key as it were actually.
Leroy Anderson smiles from on high I am sure. I was a little disappointed you didn't hand-tool your drums from sheet metal, but nobody is perfect ;-).
👍 Ingenious. Loved every minute.
Totally awesome 👍 Thanks for posting this awesome video 🙏😍
Sounds wonderful! Mechanical music is definitely mankind's greatest achievement.
You are amazing! Wow I wish I could make a busker/street/band organ that good!
@@ThatEverydayEnthusiast it just takes tons of determination and patience
@@rimbeaux I currently have designed and 3d printed an organ I hope to post videos of soon. The only problem is… I’m on vacation. :/ I sadly don’t have woodworking skills.
@@ThatEverydayEnthusiast I just ran across this one, I wonder if it's still for sale: ruclips.net/video/yxKmpNujQw8/видео.html
I love this!
I kind of like the slightly off-tune sound. Makes it sound more charming.
I think slightly off tune is a good thing, but I think this is a little more than slight.
yup, some of those notes are painful. That's why it got kicked out of the house! But I'm still proud of it.
@@rimbeaux you should be proud of it, it's awesome! it sounds like you've got maybe 3 pipes that are causing 95% of the issue, and the rest is charming. Figuring out which pipe might be tough, but it doesn't seem like too extensive of a problem.
@@rimbeaux Kicked out of the house! Your family should be proud of you and help with retuning instead... By the way, I would be happy to own one of these organs, too. Unfortunately I am far from being a talented craftsman and wonder if this may ever happen. Alternatively I could ask someone out there to sell me a fully functional Topsy 3 orgen...
It has its own custom temperament
This is the first time I've seen an Evans EMAD on an organ
so... about that... I know what I wanted it to sound like and worked hard to get a good hard thumpy bass sound out of that toy bass drum. It sounds amazing in person, you can feel it more than hear it, but the rest of the machine drowns it out. I have to give it more resonance or hit it harder!
@@rimbeaux If it's resonance you're after, then an EMAD might not be the best choice. Have you tried a single ply drumhead yet?
Here before this goes viral!!!
Such a lovely sounding doohickey.
Good
Absolutely nuts
This is amazing
I think so too
Wow, an impressive well crafted organ, and a clever tune to use the instruments fully.. I'm sure you will please many people with it.
when I got all its pipes planted and (more or less) voiced and tuned, I was amazed at its capabilities. The variety of timbres coming out of it was more than I expected.
I know there's tuning and voicing issues, but I was so excited about getting the percussion working that I wanted to record it playing something. Now I'm going to disassemble it to finish and decorate the case. I'll deal with the issues as I put it back together.
