As a Filipino, I would like to air a correction. Filipinos don't actually celebrate Christmas starting at September. One of the reasons as to why foreigners think that we Filipinos start celebrating Christmas starting at September is that some of us are just simply excited with the arrival of the 4 "Ber- Months" that some of us play Christmas carols and Christmas r elated songs on the radio. . . But we Filipinos do not yet put up the traditional trappings and decorations for Christmas, right until late November. We still have a handful of fiestas and commemorations that we hold and celebrate from September to November. September is the month of the Penafrancia festivals in Bicol, October is Rosary Month, a time when large processions and fiestas centered around the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is held in almost every Catholic parish in the country, and November is marked with All Saints and All Souls Day --- where hundreds and thousands of people visit the graves of their dearly departed to honor them with flowers, candles and even whole family reunions atop the tombs. It is on the month of December when Filipinos really gear up and start thinking about the Christmas celebrations -- although the mindset for Christmas already begins right after November 2. The Formal start of the Christmas celebrations in the Philippines would be on December 16, which is the start of the Christmas Novena Masses called Simbang Gabi (attended around 8 PM on December 15 ) or the more traditional yet chillingly bracing Misa de Gallo (The Rooster's Mass, held at 4 AM on December 16). All the while, Filipinos feast, party with friends and family through large reunions and vacations, go to parks and plazas already spruced with Christmas decorations and lights, and dive into the buzzling Christmas Bazaars and Malls already jampacked with shoppers for the Christmas shopping. People also make the last dash to the trains, buses and airports for the trip home to their home provinces. All of this will culminate with Christmas Eve, where Churches are jampacked with worshippers for the Christmas Masses, and once 12 midnight heralding Christmas Day comes, everyone at home shares in the Noche Buena, the Christmas Dinner -- after which gifts are given. Christmas Day and the Christmas and eventual New Year Holidays are family-centered. When New Year's Eve and New Year's Day comes in, you'd see us setting off hundreds and thousands of firecrackers and fireworks to exorcise evil spirits and banish all the past year's negativity to clear the way for the New Year -- as your video shows here -- although 50% of all the pyrotechnics are seen at street level, with firecrackers blasting on the streets. New Year is a time for celebration, for thanksgiving, and hope for better time in the coming year, all centered around the family. After the fireworks, we hunker down for the first feast of the year, the Media Noche feast, served at the table on the first minutes after the midnight that heralds January 1.

Ah yes . . .When does Filipino Christmas end? Well that will depend on where in the Philippines you stay in. Traditionally , the final day for Christmas in the Philippines is on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany, or the 3 Kings Feast. Liturgically, ( since most Filipinos are Catholics) Christmas ends after the Feast of Christ's + Baptism. But if you are in Cebu, Christmas will end a week after the Sinulog festivities which commemorates the Santo Nino de Cebu, held every third Sunday of January.
