In this session, we began our examination of the concept of tawakkul (reliance and trust in Allah), the second pillar of the first fundament of the spiritual path, according to Imam al-Nawawi.

In this lesson, we continue our exploration of the concept of sabr (patience), one of the pillars of taqwa. After recapping the types and substantial elements of sabr, we examine the three levels of the patient. The misconception of sabr as the acceptance of abuse is also touched on in the Q&A.

In this session, we explored further the concept of Taqwa, examining its substance, foundation, and how to enter its door. The importance of 'narrative education' in attaining taqwa and a sense of purpose is also highlighted.

This lesson introduces tasawwuf as both a science and a process. We begin our exploration of the first of al-Nawawi's five building blocks of self-purification: al-Taqwa. We examine the basic level of taqwa common to all Muslims and how to build upon it, as well as explore the two main categories into which the methods of attaining taqwa fall.

Ramaḍān and the Recalibration of the Self

Through frequent self-evaluation, one is able to assess one's strengths & weaknesses, enabling one to progressively improve and maximise one's potential in his journey to Allāh.

Tawbah (repentence) is the “first stop of the traveller and the first station of the seeker.” For the validity of tawbah there are several requisite conditions. Once sincerely done, tawbah brings one into the fold of God’s love and eases his ‘journey’.

Our journey to Allāh must take place on a path that is accepted by Him. That path is a straight path (ṣirāṭ mustaqīm). Straightness on the path requires straightness in 3 fundamental aspects, which necessitates a degree of learning.

The path to God begins with a longing for Him, an irādah, which occurs when the heart is ‘alive’ with acknowledgement and submittance to His majesty and Lordship. This inspires acts of devotion, which are, in turn, means for enlightenment and elevation as a reward from God.
